Commandant Paul Hinojosa Hello Marines, Navy FMF corpsmen and chaplains, associate members and families, We had a great monthly meeting on September 16 with 37 in attendance, of which 16 members ate breakfast. Speaking of breakfast, our cook, Mike Cotton had decided to move on with his career and will not be cooking breakfast for us any longer. Not to worry, we have a backup plan which will be put into action for October, some members have graciously volunteered to cook for us! We are also working towards moving our meetings to Sarges Grill once it opens up here in the Springs off of Powers and Palmer Park. We ve made initial contact with David and Peg Parker, owners of Sarges Grill in Fountain and they are excited about having us for breakfast every third weekend of the month. They are currently still working on opening the new restaurant and are not expecting to open until November/December timeframe. I will keep in touch with them, being careful not to pester them too much, but I think it would be great to attend the grand opening as a detachment, so let s plan for it. I want to thank Roger and Terry Baty for hosting their recent picnic for our detachment, great food and great company was had all around, followed by Russ Millers 50th birthday party where I heard many of the older Marines telling tales of what to expect for the 50+ years coming his way. Russ, try not to worry much about what was true and what was false, it s all true. Yes sir, good times! The Colorado Springs Homeless Veterans Stand down will take place on Tuesday, October 17th. We are in desperate need of volunteers from the detachment to help out in this event. In last year s event, we assisted on the clothing line and as driver for homeless families, expect to do the same this year, if turn out of active duty service members is low, we may be asked to be civilian escorts, which will entail greeting homeless veterans at the registration tables and being with them as they pass the service tables and get the help they need. Please contact me by cell 719-313-1752 so I can put you on the list. We also have the 2017 Bowl-a-thon @ Brunswick Zone located at 999 North Circle Drive, this event will take place on October 8th starting at 1 PM. Marianne Smith is still in need of bowlers and pledges. Donation should be made out to: MCL BOWL-A-THON you can pay at the event. All Proceeds go to Marines Helping Marines fund, Toys for Tots, Young Marines so let s go bowling! Please note the upcoming events from our Jr. Vice Commandant. Your participation is greatly appreciated within the detachment so take note of the events and dates and please come by to help out. As you give consideration to these events, if you know of any Marines, FMF corpsmen and Chaplains, or others who would like to participate in the League and be a part of this detachment, bring them along. Associate members can be spouses, friends and family. A final note; our Jr. Past commandant and I went down to Hank s place to check out some additional convex boxes that were used by the Army to transport ammunitions and weapons. Our goal is to take these and build them to suit our needs for a future honor guard within the detachment to attend funerals once the veteran s cemetery opens in Fountain. More details to follow in our next meeting, but we are pretty excited about this opportunity presented to us by the governor s office. Everyone take care! Stay healthy, and I will see you at next month s meet. Semper Fi, Paul Photos from the 2017 Labor Day Parade Pikes Peak Det. August 2017 Editor: Terry Crum 2

Junior Vice Commandant Steve Schwartz Greetings to all Detachment members, Associates and FMF Corpsmen. Hard to believe that it is already October and all we've accomplished in the last several months. I can't thank you enough for your participation in the many parades and other events when we had a chance to highlight and promote our League. Going forward, remember the Veterans Stand Down on October 17, the Veterans Day Parade on November 4 and our upcoming election of officers for 2018. I encourage all of you to consider stepping up to the plate and running for office or volunteering for one of our committees. Most important, we all know people who may be interested in joining our Detachment. Invite them to a meeting or please ask them to call me. Our future depends on membership and that means it's up to us. Thank you again. It's been a pleasure (and a little frustration) serving as the Jr. Vice Commandant the last ten months! Semper Fi, Steve Judge Advocate Gary George Hello Marines, Navy FMF corpsmen and chaplains, associate members and families, Nominations for the 2018 Pikes Peak Detachment elected officers will be accepted during the October Detachment meeting. Please consider volunteering to become an elected officer or an appointed officer. As a reminder to become a Detachment officer a member must member in good standing in the Marine Corps League at the time of his/her nomination and a member of the Detachment for at least one year. Semper Fi, Gary Chaplain Pat Carty s message Greetings Marines, FMF Corpsmen, Associates and, Friends. A funeral service was held for Marine Michael John Chapman 16 September at the Manitou Springs City Hall. Thanks to the Marine Honor Guard from Buckley AFB for providing the flag folding ceremony and Taps. Sharon Chapman, her family and, friends were very touched and grateful for our participation. Iris Rudesill is doing some better dealing with her health issues at home but, can still use help with rides for doctor's appointments, etc. She is working hard to be self-sufficient but, it is going to take time. Jim and Polly Woods can use help with rides as well. Please check with them to see how you can help. Remember one of our tenets is "Marines Helping Marines!" MCL member Marine Matt Broker is recovering, from a series of strokes he suffered recently. Matt is in Parkmoor Village Health and Rehabilitation, 3625 Parkmoor Village Drive. He was very helpful with the Toys for Tots program last year along with his family. He hopes to be well enough to help out again this year, if at all possible. Please take the time to visit with Matt and give him encouragement. I spoke with former Pikes Peak Detachment member Roland Durdin's daughter De Kelly during Hurricane Irma. She said they were fairing well and, had not suffered any severe damage from the storm. Roland had been hospitalized with bad coughing but, was doing better at that time. Don't forget the Veterans Luncheon held every 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Western Omelette starting at 1130. Junior Past Commandant Russ Miller is the facilitator for the event and, if we don't happen to have a guest speaker Russ keeps us entertained. Please let me know if you hear of any members or anyone in their family, that I am not aware of, who may need our help. Semper Fi, Pat Carty Commandant Paul Hinojosa Paymaster Peggy Baldwin Pikes Peak Det. August 2017 Editor: Terry Crum 3

Paymaster Peggy Baldwin It is time to pay your 2018 membership dues of $36. National is no longer sending out dues notifications. Unless you are a Life Member, all memberships expire on August 31st each year. You can bring your payment to the next meeting or send it to Pikes Peak Detachment, PO Box 10536, Colorado Springs, CO 80932-1536. Anybody wanting a membership phone roster please contact me. I can send it by email or USPS. Semper Fi, Peggy Toys for Tots Coordinator Russ Miller The time has come for us to kick off the 70 th year of Toys for Tots with a number of events this month. 1 Oct The High Country Toy Run. Thanks to Jim and Pam Wear of Pro Promotions, we are back on track for the 30 th Annual Toy Run. It will once again start from the Motorcycle Museum / Pikes Peak Harley Davidson and follow the traditional route through town, ending at Cowboys Bar downtown on Tejon. 2 Oct Begin Distributing T4T Collection Boxes to Area Businesses. If you are available to deliver boxes, we could really use your help. 6 Oct The Toys for Tots Golf Tournament. This will be our 2 nd Annual Tournament at Silver Spruce Golf Course onboard Peterson AFB run by Marine Gary Green. We are still reaching out to local businesses for raffle items and prizes for the tournament as well as hole sponsors. If you are available to help us spread the word, please contact Russ for flyers to take to potential sponsors. 28 Oct Colorado Springs Comic and Toy Convention. This is our third year being the honored charity at this event. We will need a couple Volunteers to man an information table and collect monetary donations and toys as a number of our officers will be attending the Department of Colorado Staff Meeting in Salida that day. We are still looking for a building to house this year s campaign. We need at least 10,000 square feet of open space in a building that hopefully has a loading dock as well. If you see anything that might fit the bill, please contact me at 719-235-1058. Quartermaster Russ Miller Thanks go out to those that came up to help with cash sales at the Cruise Above the Clouds Car Show in Woodland Park. Despite there being a few less cars than the past couple years, we did rather well on sales of hats, pins, and patches. We have two cash sales events coming up in the month of October. 1 Oct: at the 30 th Annual High Country Toy Run (Pikes Peak Harley Davidson, 5867 N. Nevada) from 0830-1130. We will be meeting for breakfast (0700) prior to the event at Sheldon s Luncheonette, 204 Mt. View Lane for those that would like to join us. 13 Oct: We have been invited by volunteer services at the PFC Floyd K. Lindstrom VA Outpatient Clinic (3141 Centennial Blvd) to have our Ship s Store at their Open House. Many Veteran Service Organizations will be on hand and this will be a great opportunity for us to recruit for our detachment as well. We will also be manning the popcorn machine that day to raise money for the Volunteers for Hospitalized Veterans. Helen Hill and Marianne Smith Marine Zach Bartnik Pikes Peak Det.
