The Joint Commission has raised the bar for evaluating current competency of new physicians on your medical staff. Ask yourself these questions about your medical staff s ability to perform proctoring and focused professional practice evaluation: Do you have an active proctoring program in place today, or has it basically disappeared during the past 10 years? Are you having trouble getting physicians to participate in evaluating new medical staff members? Are you aware of proctoring methods beyond direct observation? Are you using data from your peer review program effectively to monitor new medical staff members? Does your proctoring policy meet the 2008 Joint Commission standards without putting an undue burden on your medical staff and your organization? Ensure physician competency and enhance patient safety. Attend this informative program and learn how to develop an effective Proctoring and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation Program.

Proctoring and Focused Professional Practice Overview Historically, proctoring has been a part of medical culture and medical practices as a method of creating and verifying physician competency. However, as physicians became busier and spend less time in the hospital, its use has diminished during the past few decades. This trend is changing due to 2008 Joint Commission medical staff standards and the need to ensure physician competency through a standardized process called Proctoring and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation. This renewed interest in proctoring is being driven by the increasing need to ensure patient safety as healthcare safety practices are compared to other high-risk industries. Access to, and collection of, physician performance data has been a major focus in the past decade. Medical staffs across the country are implementing processes to collect and analyze data to determine physician competency. This contemporary approach to analyzing physician performance is driving hospitals to find better ways to ensure competency. Proctoring and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation is the first step in the process of appointing and reappointing privileges. This daylong program, taught by physician and credentialing professional experts, will provide the knowledge and tools you need to develop and implement an effective policy and program for Proctoring and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation to ensure determination of physician competency and to enhance patient safety. AGENDA Proctoring and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE): Why proctoring? Why now? History Regulatory requirements Industry need Ethical dilemmas The many faces of FPPE Validating the competency of new practitioners Different methods of proctoring: Prospective, concurrent, and retrospective review Getting the most from your proctoring process Creating a FPPE Applying the policy to the new applicant, the new privilege reappointment, and remedial performance Applying the proctoring methods learned to real situations Measuring focused professional practice evaluation How to collect meaningful data How do we apply the data to evaluate physician practice? Linking data from FPPE to ongoing professional practice evaluation The Credentialing Conundrum: Integrating FPPE into the credentialing process Creating criteria for proctoring Creating proctoring plans at a meeting Mock credential committee identifying issues and challenges Determining your organization s readiness to incorporate FPPE Identifying the signs of readiness What to do when the medical staff is not ready Preparing the medical staff for change You CAN get there from here Ten-step process for creating a rational proctoring process Agenda and faculty subject to change.
