WEST WINDS December 26, 2016 Page 2 HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS THIS WEEK Tuesday, December 27: Chanukah Party in the Formal Parlor at 7:30 p.m. - All are welcome! Saturday, December 31: New Years Eve Wedding Reception in the Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. FROM CHAPLAINCY As announced in last issue, Chaplain Theresa Brion realizes that this is a particularly difficult time of year with the shorter days, longer darkness, and the pressures of the holidays. Therefore, the Chapel (and the Formal Parlor to assure peace and quiet) has been reserved for prayer, meditation, etc., each day through Monday, December 26, from 6:45-7:45 a.m. and again 2:00-3:00 p.m. Chaplain Theresa also has set aside these hours to be available for listening, prayers, conversation, etc., in the Chapel during this period. If Theresa has stepped away from the Chapel during these hours or you wish to meet with her at any another time, feel free to have her paged at her office or mobile phone. FOREIGN AFFAIRS PROGRAMS Omitted in last week s announcement of foreign affairs speakers were the following who are committed but not yet scheduled: Israel-US Relations, Walter Mead; Latin America, John Bushnell; Chinese Aggressiveness in S. and E. China Seas, ADM Joseph Prueher; Cybersecurity and Cyberwar, P.W. Singer. PIANISTS NEEDED The Resident Council s Music Committee would like your help for a current musical program. GHBC resident volunteers and generous outsiders lead sing-alongs for fellow residents living on the second & third floors and on the terrace. For the most part, we do this because we love music, but also because substantial medical and psychological research indicates that music enhances peoples comfort, disposition, and quality of life. Occasionally a lead instrumentalist/leader cannot make a scheduled session, and we then have to cancel the sing-along. You can help in two ways. We know that many GHBC residents have musical training, experience, talent, and instrumental proficiency, but we don t always know these residents by name. Through this survey, we hope, first, to learn who has a piano, guitar, horn, or other instrument in their apartment, and second, perhaps we may find other volunteers who are willing to help us by substituting when, on occasion, an instrumentalist has to cancel. With a list of possible substitute instrumentalists, we could avoiding cancelling a sing-along that our fellow residents are anticipating. We have lyric-sheets for hundreds of songs, and can quickly select sheet-music to match your preferences. We ask that you respond, FIRST by letting Tiffany Proctor (Ext. 7222) know that you can play piano or other instrument of accompaniment, and SECOND, whether you are willing to step in if an accompanist cancels. Of course, you are also welcome to join us at any session just for the fun!

COMMUNITY CORNER No matter what your Faith, at this time of the year, gifts are usually a part of celebration. This year, we have been given a gift that is truly a work of Art. Its title is Along the River During the Qingming Festival, a painting by the Song Dynasty artist Zhang Zedman (1085-1147). It captures the daily life of the people and the landscape of the capital, Bianjing. The theme is often said to celebrate the festive spirit and worldly commotion at the Qingming Festival. Successive scenes reveal the lifestyle of all levels of the society from rich to poor as well as different economic activities in rural areas and the city. It offers glimpses of period clothing and architecture. The painting is considered to be the most renowned work among all Chinese paintings, and it has been called the China s Mona Lisa. Being 16 feet long, it is a magnificent work of beauty, and is well worth a trip to the Formal Parlor! A fellow resident, Tony Tambasco, gave this painting to GHBC and we are truly grateful. Grateful not only for this gift, but also for all of Tony s wisdom and talents he shares with us on an ongoing basis! Dottie Moser, Resident
