Foreword We have been working with global companies for over thirty years developing innovative products and processes, that have made a real impact on the market place. This is achieved through integrated research programmes which successfully bring together industry partners and researchers to work on innovative solutions to real world opportunities. Innovation is not without risk, it involves venturing into the unknown and there can be no guarantee of success, but risk is at the very core of innovative research. Our new International Doctorate Centre in High Value, Low Environmental Impact Manufacturing will train the future leaders of industry. Introduction Our approach to research has seen us collaborating with global companies to develop innovative solutions which help them to compete in the global market and give our partners a competitive advantage. We are a leading centre for world class education with extensive expertise in post graduate programmes. Our research graduates add significant value to global companies through major innovations, with many now holding Board level positions. Our new International Doctorate Centre builds on this pedigree by delivering a revolutionary new doctorate for the 21st century. It will address industrially challenging issues that will enable companies to develop and implement innovative and world leading sustainable research solutions. Our International Doctorate is a four year programme that combines industry relevant research, taught courses, international visits, entrepreneurial flair and networking. Driven by research teams that combine industrial and academic experience, we work with entrepreneurial leaders who understand and appreciate that global environments are constantly changing. Companies need an understanding of the strategic and commercial benefits of moving into a low-carbon economy. Our vision is to create a future generation of manufacturing leaders with the highlevel know-how and research experience that is essential to compete in a global environment defined by high impact and low carbon. About WMG WMG is an academic department within the University of Warwick which provides a unique bridge between academia and industry. Founded by Professor Lord Bhattacharyya in 1980 in order to reinvigorate UK manufacturing, our mission is to improve the competitiveness of companies through the application of value adding innovation, new technologies and skills deployment, bringing academic rigour to industrial and organisational practice. Today there are over 300 staff working across four buildings at Warwick, we have education centres in six countries and an annual programme of over 100m. Our success over the past 30 years is the result of cutting-edge research and effective knowledge transfer, working with global companies such as Airbus, Arup, AstraZeneca, BAE Systems, GlaxoSmithKline, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Network Rail, Rolls-Royce, Siemens, TATA Motors, TATA Steel and TVS. Today we work with both global companies and SMEs across many sectors to produce innovative products and processes. The strength of our research expertise in high value, low environmental impact manufacturing extends across digital technologies, materials and manufacturing. Concerns about the environment and use of natural resources are embedded in our research. As society changes the way it engages with the environment, we remain committed to pursuing new and innovative ways to deliver conventional and nonconventional solutions. By combining our research expertise with a multi-disciplinary approach, we provide businesses with the opportunity to engage in hi-tech research and development. We work across many sectors including aerospace, automotive, creative industries, healthcare, heritage, horticulture, motorsport and pharmaceutical. We have seen more than 24,000 individuals involved in our education programmes. Research Entrepreneurs Research Entrepreneurs Research Your research starts from day one and will be focused on real opportunities and problems in your sponsoring company. Your role will be to deliver research excellence and implement innovations. You will be required to develop a minimum of one submission or major report into your research portfolio per annum. You will also be required to develop and present a minimum of one paper at a leading international conference. Your individual research project will be in the areas of digital technologies, materials or manufacturing. En-route to the International Doctorate, you will undertake an MSc in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. This will involve group projects delivering real-world solutions, a series of focused modules and commercialisation workshops where you will understand the challenges of successfully commercialising research and development. To understand the global manufacturing environment your international placement will enable you to develop research collaborations with key individuals in policy making, funding organisations, companies and intermediary institutes. Entrepreneurship In order to become a leader in industry, it is important that you have the knowledge, skills, and networks to compete in the global market. To achieve this, you will take part in a variety of debates, seminars, networking, social and organisational activities. Through our strong established links we will give you the opportunity to connect with senior industrialists, policy makers and opinion formers, to embed yourself in key networks. Entrepreneurship is the practice of seizing new business and organisation opportunities. New business success requires a rare combination of innovation, technical skills and entrepreneurial drive and know-how. You will be working with entrepreneurs and early-stage investors to understand what business experience is required in order to create an effective business model. You will learn the challenges of commercialisation, enabling you to develop innovative ideas. You will be required, in teams, to organise your own conference including topic, speakers, venue, sponsors and promotion. You can apply for the International Doctorate at any stage of your career as long as you have at least a 2:1 honours degree or equivalent. Cost and Funding The costs for the International Doctorate vary depending whether you are a new recruit or an existing company employee. In both cases additional sponsorship may be available from EPSRC and the University of Warwick. Impact The Research Entrepreneur will deliver research solutions by applying rigorous analysis, innovative thinking and good management practice. You will benefit from the international perspective of the Doctorate, with the knowledge gained being transferred back into your company. The skills they develop will enable them to work effectively within your multidisciplinary teams.
