# Supporting students to achieve careers in Medicine and Healthcare

Who are we? The Primary Care Workforce Centre is a collaboration between NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group, NHS Health Education England Wessex, and Bournemouth University. The centre was established in April 2016 to focus on training, education, workforce development and research across the entire primary care workforce in Dorset. We recognise and understand the challenges faced by students wanting a career in medicine or healthcare and by working in collaboration with healthcare providers across the county we can support students to overcome these challenges and develop their pathway to their future career. We believe that all students have the potential to play an important role and make a difference to healthcare in Dorset and we are dedicated to improving access to careers in medicine and healthcare and supporting students to prepare for their future. The exciting variety of roles on offer in the field of medicine and healthcare can sometimes be overwhelming, so we have designed programmes that explore the different roles and provide students with practical hands-on experiences of the treatments and procedures carried out across the different roles. We strongly believe that Dorset provides an excellent platform to develop a career in medicine or healthcare and would like to support more students to progress into these noble professions.

Introduction to Medicine and Introduction to Healthcare programmes Both programmes are run over 3 days and provide experience in both a primary care (GP Practice) and secondary care (Hospital) setting. The programmes usually run over consecutive days but there are occasions when this is not practicable. The programmes are generally run out of term time to make it easier for students to attend. The programmes are led by experienced medical, clinical and healthcare professionals who are passionate about their profession and supporting students to develop. As well as providing expert knowledge and insight, our professionals will also supervise and support the simulated activities. Both programmes provide: Hands-on simulation activities learning how to diagnose and treat patients Engaging talks from professionals about the work they do and how they ve got to where they are today Advice & guidance on how to plan for a career in medicine or healthcare, and tips on applying for medical school or the relevant qualifications. The programmes are run across Dorset in 3 different locations, Bournemouth, Poole and Dorchester. In both Bournemouth and Poole the primary care experience is run in Bournemouth University s simulated environment and the secondary care experience is run in Bournemouth or Poole hospital. In Dorchester the primary care experience is run in a local GP practice and the secondary care experience is run in Dorset County Hospital.

Introduction to Medicine Programme A role in medicine can offer a diverse range of career opportunities and our programme provides students a deeper insight into the exciting roles within the field of medicine. This programme has been tailored specifically for students that have a keen interest in pursuing a role within medicine as a doctor. Over the 3 days students will learn about the role of doctors in primary care (GPs) and doctors in secondary care (Hospitals). Feedback from recent programmes show that over 90% of attendees find the programme very useful and that attendees were very grateful for the support with their future decision making. Programme Duration: 3 days Who is it for: Year 10 & 11 students Next Programme: 25, 26, 27 October 2017 Location: Bournemouth University and Poole Hospital Further Programme: 14, 15, 16 February 2018 Location: Bournemouth University and Bournemouth Hospital

Introduction to Healthcare Programme Working in Healthcare offers many exciting roles and career opportunities. Through our Introduction to Healthcare programme students can learn about and experience the diverse range of careers available. Our programme covers roles in Nursing, Midwifery, Paramedics, Mental Health, Physiotherapy, Nutrition and many other amazing opportunities. Learning from the professionals and taking part in simulated activities, students will gain valuable insight into a career in healthcare and how to develop into a healthcare professional of the future. Being able to learn about the different opportunities healthcare can offer gives students a broader choice when considering their future career and helps them decide how to progress their education. Programme Duration: 3 days Who is it for: Year 10 & 11 students Next programme commencing: 23, 24, 25 October 2017. Location: Bournemouth University and Bournemouth Hospital

Work Experience Opportunities We have partnered with our healthcare providers in Dorset in order to offer students work experience opportunities across a variety of roles in healthcare. Offering an insight to the medical world can aid students in their decision making for their future. Our programme helps match students with employers to ensure they have the opportunity to experience working in healthcare under the guidance of experienced professionals. We have opportunities on offer across the diverse range of roles in healthcare. Students can explore exciting roles within medicine, nursing, paramedics and pharmaceutical as well as roles in management, administration and business development and many more opportunities. We want to show students the wide range of roles available within healthcare, and support them in making the right decisions for their future and their career. Programme Duration: 1 to 2 weeks (can be tailored) Who is it for: Students in Year 10 & above.

Ambassador Programmes We have a wide team of healthcare ambassadors who can visit schools and provide an insight into a career in medicine, careers in healthcare, life at medical school or the educational journey to become a healthcare professional. Our team of ambassadors are made up of qualified professionals from the local community and trainees currently studying. Our ambassadors will share knowledge from their work experience and discuss the progression from student to an experienced professional They can offer advice on current topics within the healthcare sector and guide students in choosing a career that could suit them. The advice and guidance our ambassadors can offer has proven to help students progress with their career in medicine and healthcare. If you have an upcoming careers fair or would like our ambassadors to come and speak at your school please contact us.
