Bucknell Kappa Kappa Gamma Delta Phi Chapter Spring 2016 Newsletter The Blue Hooter a letter from the Spring (and summer) from the Delta Phi PresidentHappy Chapter! As the end of the semester wraps up, our sisters are busier than ever, but it is a perfect time to reflect on our amazing spring semester. Upon returning to campus from winter vacation, our sisters quickly jumped back into academics and extracurricular activities. With the transitioning of a new chapter council for the 2016 year, the new year was off to a great start as everyone took their new roles. Our annual philanthropic Valentine s Day event, Kappa Kisses, was record breaking this year, as we raised over $500 for Reading is Fundamental. Along with our own event, Delta Phi has been extremely involved in other philanthropic events whether it be teaming up with various groups for joint events or participating in other fraternities and sororities happenings. It is truly inspiring to see our sisters come together with other members of the Greek community to raise money and overall awareness for such amazing causes. As summer quickly approaches, so many of our members have shown their excellence by accepting jobs and internships all over the country and world. With many of our junior members abroad this spring semester, the chapter is looking forward to welcoming them home and hearing all about their adventures over seas. At the same time, it is overwhelmingly bittersweet to see our senior class graduate. We will miss them dearly but know that they are an extraordinary group of women who are going to do great things. It has been an incredible experience to serve as one of Delta Phi s first sophomore presidents and I am looking forward to another great semester in the fall. To my sisters, have a fun and safe summer! -Annie Fennell, President Table of Contents: 1. Letter from the President 2. Recruitment 3. Sisters Abroad 4. Philanthropy 5. Recruitment After a semester of learning the ropes, spring is the time for us to plan for the future of Kappa Kappa Gamma. At the beginning of April, we had the pleasure of meeting over two hundred first-year girls at our signature event, the Kappa Kappa Gamma Ice Cream Social. This is an informal event where the potential new members have the opportunity to meet our sisters and get to know each other over some ice cream! Our members loved getting to know new girls and it set a very positive tone for future recruitment. We then wrapped up the semester with Open Suites, our major event for the spring. Open Suites is an exact run-through of Sisterhood round, the first round of formal recruitment in the fall. This is an excellent opportunity for us to practice the songs, conversation techniques and gather an overall feel for what to expect when we arrive back to campus in August. Especially for current sophomores, who have not yet been on the recruiting side, this event helps everyone feel comfortable with what to expect next semester. Open suites was a huge success; our members felt confident and prepared for the process. We are so excited to get even closer to welcoming a new class of Kappa Kappa Gamma! -Heather Mabie, Recruitment Chair

Sisters Abroad Studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa has been an experience unlike anything I could have ever expected. I have not only learned so much about myself through my travels, but I have been able to make connections both with the sisters I came with as well as fellow Kappa sisters that I have met here, giving me a community thousands of miles from home that I never thought I would have! I am so happy I have been able to have such a unique and adventure-filled semester abroad in the most amazing place on earth. -Molly Hopkins, Junior This semester, so many of our sisters have gone abroad, leaving us with only a few juniors left on campus! We have Delta Phi members studying in Cape Town, South Africa; Australia; Prague, Czech Republic; Florence, Italy; Rome, Italy; Grenada, Spain; London, England; Copenhagen, Denmark; India; and Brazil! We miss them very much and look forward to hearing all about their adventures in the near future!! Luckily, they have kept us updated throughout the semester with all of their breathtaking pictures of all their new experiences. Our sisters have been able to immerse themselves in the culture of these various destinations, pushing themselves outside of their comfort zones. Many of our members abroad have also come across other Kappas, creating great life connections! We cannot wait to have them back and to hear all their amazing stories! - Caroline Haber, PR Chair

Philanthropy The women of the Delta Phi chapter have been participating in philanthropy events all over campus, all while running our own fun and exciting events. All of the books that were collected over parents weekend are being donated to the local Lewisburg library and several preschools in the area. The books are greatly appreciated and many young children will benefit greatly from them! The week before Valentines Day, we held our annual Kappa Kisses event, in which Kappa girls sell Hershey kisses for people to buy and send to their Valentines. We raised just over 500 dollars from the event and donated 100% of the proceeds to Reading is Fundamental, Kappa s national philanthropy. Not only has Kappa been spear heading many of our own philanthropy events, we have been involved in many others all over campus. Whether it be performing a synchronized routine for Delta Gamma s Anchor Splash, or making it to the championship game of powder puff football, for Sigma Chi s annual philanthropy, Kappa has done it all. Over all, Kappa has done an amazing job being part of the philanthropic commnity all over Bucknell s campus. -Olivia Kelly, Philanthropy Chair

Community Service This semester the women of Kappa Kappa Gamma have been dedicated to different community service ventures through out the Lewisburg community. Many of our sisters dedicated hours of time to Head Start, a Bucknell program that allows volunteers to tutor young Lewisburg students. Kappa also continued its growing relationship with the local Lewisburg community garden, in which sisters spent hours picking and sorting fruits and vegetables. Not only do we have sisters doing community service off campus, but on campus as well. We have sisters in charge of organizing Dance Marathon, Bison pals, 5k s,and Colleges against Cancer. As Kappa s we support each other in whatever way possible, so involvement is always high at events led by one of our own. Overall, it was a great semester for the Delta Phi chapter, filled with community service. The Delta Phi chapter has done a wonderful job of maintaining our academic goals, achieving an average GPA of 3.5 for the Fall 2015 semester. At an academic rank of 3 out of 8 sororities on Bucknell s campus, Kappas should definitely be proud of all that they have accomplished academically in the Fall semester. Our chapter s GPA surpassed both the all-greek average and the all-women average. There were 9 Kappa women who achieved an astounding 4.0 GPA for the semester, and 33 women who achieved their GPA goals set at the beginning of the semester. The Delta Phi chapter participated in a variety of academically related events this semester including study hours with fraternities and sororities, a sister-to-sister tutoring system, and finals and midterms study sessions on the suite. The Delta Phi chapter upholds all of Kappa s ideals with regard to academics, as it looks to foster a comforting and helpful learning environment for Kappas to grow intellectually. -Megan Schlosser, VP of Academic Excellence Academics
