PICU and Acute Services Psychiatric Intensive Care and Acute services

All of our services have 24 hour medical cover and admissions can occur 24-hours-a-day

Introduction As a national provider of specialist mental health services, we offer a wide range of services to meet the acute needs of people who require a rapid admission to mental health services including those who may need an intensive care environment. At Cygnet we have more than 200 beds across our intensive care and acute network. We offer a one hour response time to referrals, with a decision on a placement no more than an hour after we receive adequate clinical information. Where a bed is not immediately available in the preferred service, we can cross-refer to our national network of hospitals upon agreement. All of our services have 24 hour medical cover and admissions can occur 24-hours-a-day. Information and communication is key as well as a daily bed availability communication for bed managers, we also provide full weekly reports on service users, keeping those who commission services up to date on progress and next steps. We re focused on length of stay and making sure people move as quickly as possible from our services to the most appropriate environment for them. People can step down through the pathways available within Cygnet services, for example from PICU into an acute ward. This is possible both within individual Cygnet hospitals, or across services as necessary. We aim to prepare all service users for discharge straight back to their community under the care of the community mental health team, or to the least restrictive environment appropriate to meet their own individual needs. Our aim is always to offer value-led, cost effective services which quickly meet the needs of people with very complex and acute mental health illness. Who can we support? Our services offer excellent care and support for those who require immediate stabilisation to manage their mental ill health. Our PICU services can offer places for individuals who are aged over 18 and are: detained under an appropriate Section of the Mental Health Act / Order experiencing difficulties which present a risk to their wellbeing, or that of others, and which can t be assessed or treated safely in an open acute inpatient facility The aim within our PICU services is for short, rapid interventions to help people regain a sense of control and order in their lives, so they can move to the least restrictive care setting possible. All of our services are single-gender. Our PICU services are AIMS (Accreditation for Inpatient Mental Health Services) accredited with the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Our Acute services can support individuals, both informal and detained, stepping down from PICU services. These services can also accept direct admissions. We can support individuals experiencing difficulties due to a range of conditions including: Psychosis Acute Depressive illness Personality Disorder Self-harm Dual diagnosis Acute mental illness Bi-polar disorder Schizophrenia We also offer two specialist services for older adults. These services also accept emergency admissions. Our PICU and acute services can also support individuals requiring treatment for addictions, including alcohol and drugs (including legal highs and opiates). Bed Availability A bed availability tool is available on our website where you can find up-to-date details of beds available throughout Cygnet s nationwide services. www.cygnethealth.co.uk

Cygnet is amongst the UK s leaders in service user involvement.

Service User Involvement Cygnet is amongst the UK s leaders in service user involvement. We are committed to truly having service users at the centre of their treatment. They are involved from assessment when we re asking what they want to achieve from their care, to working collaboratively with them to develop individual care plans which will help them achieve their desired outcomes. We launched and continue to run the National Service User Awards, which remains the industry-standard in service-user led awards and recognition for achievement. The awards are independently judged by a panel of experts. Therapeutic input In our PICU and Acute services each person will be assessed by the full clinical MDT shortly after admission. Where a person is able to engage, our teams work to the national standard of supporting individuals to receive a minimum of 25 hours of therapy per week, both individual and group. All of Cygnet s services have extensive multi-disciplinary teams which offer multiple therapies. We offer a working week of therapeutic input where service users can engage in a minimum of 25 hours of therapy per week, including group and individual therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, Dialectic Behavioural Therapy, substance misuse, vocational support and others. Each of our hospitals is able to offer a comprehensive programme of therapies. The focus in PICU is on stabilisation, and in Acute on providing treatment and therapy which will aid recovery and help a person return to the least restrictive environment for them as quickly as possible. Cygnet s average length of stay and discharge destination outcome data is published on our website at www.cygnethealth.co.uk/for-professionals/length-of-stay.html Risk We re not risk averse we take measured risks and place service users at the centre giving them opportunities to test themselves and therefore move toward recovery more quickly. We have implemented a scheme of collaborative risk assessments and risk planning, working with service users to understand their risks and engage in the risk assessment process.
