Instructional Methods: A variety of instructional methods will be used to include, but not to be limited to: lecture, active dialogue, cooperative learning techniques, quizzes, student writing, and peer evaluation. General Course Policies: 1. Students will show professionalism and courtesy at all times as outlined in the AmeriTech Code of Conduct, the Nursing Student Handbook, and the AmeriTech College Catalog. Students are especially required to show courtesy to all AmeriTech faculty and staff and to comply with their direction while attending class, lab, Simulated Clinical Experience (SCE), and/or clinical. Students at clinical sites are to follow the direction of the clinical site staff. Lack of courtesy is grounds for probation and/or dismissal from the Nursing program. 2. Students are expected to arrive prepared for learning, and to remain actively engaged in the dynamics of the classroom, lab, or clinical at all times. 3. Students are required to follow the dress code as outlined in the Nursing Student Handbook. Students arriving to class, clinical, lab, or SCE in violation of the dress code may be asked to go home and change, and the time it takes to come into compliance with dress code will be deducted from their attendance time 4. Students may not use electronic devices in class, lab, Simulated Clinical Environment (SCE), or clinical except when on designated breaks. These devices include but are not limited to: cellphones, cameras, MP3 and other music players, personal digital assistants, and laptop computers. The only exception to this rule is the use of laptop computers in the classroom when permitted by the instructor. All AmeriTech instructors have the right to request that students turn off and put away any electronic device, including their laptop computer, while in class, lab, SCE, or clinical. Students who refuse to comply with this request will be asked to leave the classroom, lab, SCE, or clinical setting. No photography in class, lab, or the simulator is permitted without the consent of the instructor as well as the people being photographed. Students may not take photographs in the clinical setting. 5. Students are expected to attend the section of the class, lab, SCE, and/or clinical for which they are registered. Students may not attend another section to make up an absence without the advance permission of the instructor(s) involved. Instructors are not required to allow students to attend a different section from the one in which they are registered. 6. Because of the accelerated nature of this program, any absence from class, lab, SCE, and/or clinical will be detrimental to the student s education. Students are expected to attend all sessions of the classes for which they are registered. If a student is absent more than once in a semester from any one theory class, lab, SCE, and/or clinical they will be withdrawn from Revised 08/2014 Page 4 Copyright Ameritech College All rights reserved. the program. Instructors may NOT excuse an absence. Students with extraordinary circumstances surrounding an absence (such as hospitalization, death in the family, court summons) should notify Student Services as soon as possible. 7. Single clinical absences (entire day or partial day) MUST be made up by the end of the semester. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor and arrange for clinical make-up time. Other absences do not need to be made up; however, it is the student s responsibility to follow up with the faculty member and/or fellow students regarding work and information missed during an absence. Students should note that points may be lost (for such items as quizzes and participation) for a class, lab, or SCE session that is missed, and it is possible that these lost points could adversely affect their grade. 8. Students should observe standards of punctuality at all times. This means that they must be in the class, lab, SCE, or clinical prior to the start of the session and be ready to participate at the beginning of the session. Students who arrive tardy will be noted and three tardy marks will be equivalent to one absence. Students arriving after the start of nursing shift report in the clinical area will not be permitted to attend clinical that day. 9. All students are required to follow acceptable standards of academic integrity. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Evidence of cheating in any form may result in immediate dismissal from AmeriTech College. Students utilizing any electronic device during a quiz or test (unless given specific permission by the instructor) will be assumed to be utilizing that device for cheating and will be dealt with in a manner appropriate to that assumption. 10. The misuse of computing, networking, or information resources may result in the restriction of computing privileges. Examples of misuse include, but are not limited to: unauthorized use of another person s computer account; viewing inappropriate content on the Internet; attempting to monitor or tamper with another person s electronic communications; and/or reading, copying, changing, or deleting another user s files. Grading Criteria: Each student is responsible for maintaining a cumulative minimum average academic grade of 76% or above for the semester. All classes require the student to achieve a 76% in order to pass the course. Failure to achieve satisfactory minimum grade levels will result in probation. Should a student need to repeat a course, that student is responsible for the associated costs; however, Federal Financial Aid may be available. Students should review the AmeriTech catalog regarding probation. Further information regarding academic probation is available through the office of the Nursing Director and information regarding costs is available through the Financial Aid office. Students may only repeat one course during the nursing program. If they fail two courses (including general education, core courses or other nursing course requirements), or fail the same course more than once, they will be dismissed from the program. Students who do not complete Form A prior to the start of class will receive a grade of 0 on the Form B exam (see below). Grading For the Nutrition, Fundamentals, Mental Health, Maternal-Newborn, Pediatric, Leadership and Management, and Adult Medical-Surgical exams the grade entered will be the FIRST grade noted on the Form B Practice Exam according to the following schedule: (Proficiency Level) Level 3: 100 Level 2: 90 Level 1: 75 Below Level 1: 60 The instructor has the information regarding scores needed for proficiency levels on each individual specialty practice examination. The Comprehensive Final Examination grade will be recorded as follows: 80% and above: 100 74%-79.9%: 95 70%-73.9%: 90 0-69.9%: 50 Students who take the Comprehensive Final Examination more than once will receive the highest score out of all attempts. Comprehensive Final Examination 1. Students MUST have a working laptop computer that meets school specifications to complete this national exam. 2. Students who do not have a working laptop will not be allowed to take the examination and will receive a score of 0 on the exam. 3. Students who have not successfully passed ALL other classes needed for graduation will not be eligible for the second Comprehensive Final Examination (if applicable). They, and those who passed the Comprehensive Final Exam on the first attempt, will both receive a score of 0 on the comprehensive final examination, which will result in a failing course grade. The student will retake the NUR 290 course when and if they return to school to retake the other failed course. Students who fail NUR 290 because they did not pass other coursework and could not take the comprehensive final examination will not have the NUR 290 failure count towards the two-failure policy. Revised 08/2014 Page 7 Copyright Ameritech College All rights reserved. No part of this syllabus may be copied, reproduced, stored in a retrieval system, or

All Students MUST participate in an ATI Live Review on-site, three day session that is held during finals week (dates and times to be determined). Students who do not achieve a passing score in NUR 290 after 2 comprehensive final examination attempts will be required to repeat NUR 290. Students repeating NUR 290 who have already taken two versions of the comprehensive final exam will have only ONE more attempt to take the comprehensive final examination (at the completion of the repeated course). After this attempt, the student who has not achieved a passing grade will have a second NUR 290 failure recorded on their transcript and will not graduate from the AmeriTech College associate degree nursing program. 1 PLEASE NOTE: THIS SYLLABUS IS A GUIDE TO LEARNING, IT IS NOT A CONTRACT! The instructor reserves the right to make changes to the syllabus at any time. 2 If you need special accommodations, please notify the instructor prior to the first class period. Practice for Proficiency: Journaling Students will receive 5 points possible for each question that is journaled. For each question you choose to journal, (5 weekly), briefly document your approach to each question as you learned in Nurse Logic 2.0 Testing and Remediation; 1. What is the question asking? Write what the question is asking, in your own words. 2. Which type of question is this: a positively worded question, a negatively worded question, or a priority question? 3. What content knowledge is needed to answer this question? (Look up content when you are unsure or need to review the information.) 4. For each possible answer, state why it is the answer to choose (the key) or should be eliminated (the distractors). 5. Post reflection: What might keep me from answering this question correctly? What is most important in getting this particular question right? Example #1: Question: For an adult who experienced a seizure, which notation is a nurse most likely to document in the client s medical record about the postictal period? A. Whether the client experienced an aura B. What the client was doing immediately preceding the seizure C. What the condition of the client was immediately following the seizure D. Where tonic-clonic activity started and how long the client was unresponsive 1. Write what the question is asking, in your own words: What does a nurse chart about the postictal period when an adult had a seizure? 2. Which type of question is this: Positively worded 3. What content knowledge is needed to answer this question?: A postictal period happens after a seizure, client is usually dazed or very sleepy during this time. An aura may happen before a seizure, and tonicclonic activity refers to rhythmic jerking or shaking of muscles during a seizure. 4. Explain why each action is correct or incorrect: A is not correct because an aura happens before a seizure, and is not part of the postictal period. B is not correct because the postictal period is after the seizure and is not related to what the client was doing before the seizure. Revised 08/2014 Page 12 Copyright Ameritech College All rights reserved. No part of this syllabus may be copied, reproduced, stored in a retrieval system, or

C is correct because the condition of the client after the seizure is what the nurse would describe as being characteristic of the postictal period. D is not correct because tonic-clonic activity and length of unresponsiveness are referring to what happened during the seizure, not afterward. 5. Reflection: What might keep me from answering this question correctly? What is most important in getting this question right? I might not get this question right if I was worried about the part of the question that asks what a nurse is most likely to document. I may be more worried about whether the question is asking about documentation, when it is really just finding out if I know what a postictal period is. I would also miss the question if I didn t know the meaning of the terms postictal period, aura, and tonic-clonic activity. Example #2: Question: Which action should a nurse perform first when receiving a client in the operating room? A. Assess the client s level of anxiety B. Confirm that the operative consent is signed C. Verify the correct operative site with the client D. Check the client s name band and ask the client s name 1. Write what the question is asking, in your own words: What is the most important thing that has to get done as soon as a client gets into the operating room before surgery? 2. Which type of question is this: Priority 3. What content knowledge is needed to answer this question?: What actions are taken prior to surgery, importance of actions to be taken before surgery, and in what order actions should be done 4. Explain why each action is correct or incorrect: A is not correct because assessing anxiety is not as important as verifying safety issues like consent and patient identity and operative site. B is important, but not as important as validating the client s identity. C is also important but not as important as checking identity. D is most important to do first, because if the client is not the right client, it won t do any good to check for the consent form or the operative site. Revised 08/2014 Page 13 Copyright Ameritech College All rights reserved. No part of this syllabus may be copied, reproduced, stored in a retrieval system, or

5. Reflection: What might keep me from answering this question correctly? What is most important in getting this question right? We have always been taught to make sure the consent is signed before anything else. I need to be able to understand that verifying identity must come before other good actions. Same thing for verifying the site it IS important, but checking identity is MORE important. I might pick A because it says assess ; but checking anxiety levels won t make a huge difference; finding out you have the wrong patient is much more important!
