How Your Business Can Save ENERGY EFFICIENCY REBATES
Overview Most programs are utility based due to PUC mandates on utilities to reduce output on grid Customers pay into programs through charges on utility bills Most incentives are first come first serve until funds are depleted Incentives cover almost any project deemed to be more energy efficient Some programs allow rebate to go directly to vendors, lessening capital restraints to customer
Categories of Incentives Prescriptive and Custom are main categories Prescriptive incentives are per unit based. IE $10/bulb purchased. Custom incentives are based on energy saved when compared to current equipment. IE $.05/kwh. Custom projects usually require saving measurement and verification Custom projects usually require pre-approval
Government Incentives Federal and State incentives also available Most government programs offer tax credits as the incentive EPACT is main government program, with tax incentives up to $1.80/sq. foot of building space affected by efficiency upgrades Projects such as wind, solar, geothermal, etc. also eligible for government incentives
Lighting Biggest Bang for Buck with fastest ROI Most incentives are prescriptive in nature Usually most robust incentives, with some bulbs 100% covered by utility rebates Depending on current equipment, lighting upgrades save most energy compared to other efficiency projects Easiest project to calculate savings LED replacements have long lifespan, possibly up to 15 years, adding to value of project
Top Lighting Markets PSE&G Long Island Certain LED bulbs 100% rebated SCE&G (South Carolina) Certain LED bulbs 100% rebated Utilities throughout MA Certain LED bulbs rebated to $1/bulb Xcel Energy MN and CO Certain LED bulbs rebated to $2/bulb 16
Lighting Success Stories PSE&G Long Island $60,000 in rebates secured. Less than 3 month ROI on all projects Massachusetts Over $100,000 in rebates secured. Average ROI of 6 months. Xcel Energy Over $70,000 in rebates secured. Average ROI of 10 months. 17
HVAC Wide range of incentives including thermostat upgrades, PTAC replacements, building automation systems and rooftop units Usually not a strong ROI, as larger equipment is more costly, and rebates are not as high Projects vary on custom vs. prescriptive depending on complexity
ERC Services ERC notifies client of areas with strong rebate opportunities ERC has network of vendors for bid solicitation Client preferred vendors may also solicit bids Review all proposals for accuracy, cost, ROI, etc. to help determine best options for client If project proceeds, ERC works with vendor and customer on project implementation ERC coordinates rebate process as needed
