Rotary International District 7390 John Kramb, Governor 2015-2016 February 2016 Peace & Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month Fellow Rotarians, This past January I had the privilege of going to St. Marc, Haiti with members of the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown. We were visiting several schools which are sponsored by Rotarians, and also doing a service project. At the high school we visited was a young man who had been chosen as our tour guide for the visit. His was an inspirational story. For four years he was unable to come up with the tuition to finish school. As such, he had to drop out of school each year. Now, at age 22, he was finally is his last year of eligibility. In talking with him, we found out that he wants to pursue a Science degree in Biology in the States. After completion, he intends to return to Haiti to help his fellow countrymen. Unfortunately, he was still $250 short on this year s tuition and this is his final year of eligibility. That evening at dinner, we Rotarians discussed his situation. The next morning, people quietly contributed enough money not only to pay for the young man s tuition, but enough excess was donated to help pay for meals at the nearby grade school, where the poorest of the poor attend. And whose only meal that day might be the one they ate at school. How is this incident related to this month s theme? Haiti has the lowest per capita income in the western world. The level of poverty we saw there was astonishing. We Rotarians, through little acts of kindness, bring peace to some part of the world. Whether it is providing glasses to people in Ethiopia, clean water in Honduras, polio vaccinations in India, medical care in the Dominican Republic, or education in Haiti, we have provided a small sense of peace. Which is what we do! There are so many opportunities to do good in the world, and I encourage you and your club to find a need, and fill it. Find a hurt and sooth it. Be a gift to the World! Yours In Rotary Service, John Kramb DG 2015-2016 Inside this Issue: 2018-19 DG Selected, District Training Assembly 2 District Training Assembly Reg Form 3 Rotary Youth Exchange 4 District Conference 5-6 Club Activity, International Convention 7 Membership & Attendance Report, District Calendar FEBRUARY 2016 D7390 ROTAR-E-REPORTER 8

District Governor 2018-19 Selected! The District Governor Nominating Committee has met and recommended John E. May (Hershey) to serve as your District Governor for the 2018-2019 Rotary year. John joined the Rotary Club of Hershey in 1993 and served on the Club s Board from 2006 to 2011. During that time he rotated through each of the club offices and served as President in 2009-2010. He has been active with the District Group Vocational Service Exchange Committee since 2009 and has been a host family for several of the exchanges during his years in Rotary. From 2011 to 2014, John served as the Assistant Governor for Group C and is currently serving as Assistant Governor for Group C again. He chaired the 2013, 2014 and 2015 District Conferences. In 2015, John became a faculty member for the Rotary Leadership Institute. John joined the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in 1976 and has held several senior administrative positions over the years. Currently he is the Medical Center s Chief Compliance Officer. John s first career out of college was in education where he taught science in the Seminole County Florida school system. John is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and the University of Central Florida. John has two sons. Justin is married and he and his wife, Yublia, have one daughter and live in Hershey. Justin is employed by the Hershey Company. His other son, Jaren, is currently living in Shanghai, China and he works for TE Connectivity. Outside of Rotary, John has been involved with the United Way of the Capital Region since 1999 and chairs one of the allocation panels and is on the Basic Needs Focus Care Council. He also served nine years on the Board of the Cornwall Manor Retirement Community in Lebanon County. Many thanks to PDG Janice Black and the members of the District Governor Nominating Committee for their diligent and timely actions. Our District Training Assembly is scheduled for Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the Radisson Hotel Harrisburg (1150 Camp Hill Bypass, Camp Hill). Registration and a hot breakfast buffet will be held from 7:30 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. The training sessions will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $30 per person and the day will conclude at Noon. All Rotarians in the District should attend this District Training Assembly. It will be helpful in building esprit de corps in your Club. You have an important responsibility to teach our newer Rotary members the joys that come from participating and providing service through Rotary. The sessions during the morning will be fast-paced and interactive. They are designed to help us all as Club and District leaders to plan for a great Rotary year. At the beginning of the District Training Assembly we will also approve the 2016-2017 District budget. A registration form is available on the next page of the newseltter. Please make any necessary copies. You can also register and pay on-line at: http://rotary7390.org/event/3917e5d1-50b6-48cf-b01c-5ae630f64302/. Deadline for registration is March 15, 2016. A Holiday Gathering was held on January 10 th at the 4H Center in York (the 4H members prepared the evening meal) to celebrate the announcement of the assignment of countries to the 7390 and 7620 students who were selected in November 2015 to participate in the long term Outbound program. Approximately 100 people attended the celebration including Inbounds, Host parents of Inbounds, Club YEOs and Counselors, newly selected Outbounds, the parents of the Outbounds, Rotex (past youth exchange students) and District Youth Exchange Officers. The announcement of assigned countries was done by presenting the country s flag to each of the newly selected Outbounds. The inbounds, wearing their Rotary Blazers with many pins, shared their culture by bringing a dish (a side dish or dessert) that was native to their country for all of the attendees to sample. And Rotex were there also to help celebrate the country announcements and support the exchange students. Prior to the country announcement, welcoming remarks were given by DGE Kevin Cogan who told everyone that the Holiday Gathering is really my favorite Rotary event of the year. The welcoming remarks were followed by District Inbound Chair Walt Tilley/RC of York and the introductions of each of the Inbounds and the native dish they prepared, and then followed by the presentation of the Outbounds by Amber Seidel/Rotex Denmark and District Outbound Chair and presentation of flags by Chris Perlick D7620 YE Chair. In the meantime Melissa Bruck was taking pictures of the new Outbounds for their business cards. DGE Kevin is no stranger to youth exchange as his son Sean was an exchange student in 2007-2008 to Argentina. Per Kevin the Spanish skills that Sean developed as a result of YE paid off handsomely. Sean has since graduated from the University of Scranton majoring in International Studies and has received several promotions in the Army. (Sean Cogan is in the middle of the picture to the left.) To the readers of this article, please check out Generation World, a youth exchange newsletter http://rotary7390.org/ Page/youth-exchange-newsletter that was rebooted in 2015 and is published once every four months. By reading all of the first three issues of 2015 you will learn more about D7390 s youth exchange from Rotex, past and current District YE Chair, a mother s perspective of her family s youth exchange experience hosting an Inbound from Ecuador and having two sons and a daughter who each had an experience of a lifetime as a Rotary Youth Exchange student (2 Short Term and 1 Long Term), plus information from our District Youth Exchange Inbound Chair, Outbound Chair and Lead Trainer to support any club in D7390 in their current or future participation with Rotary Youth Exchange. Additional information is on the district s website under youth exchange. By Linda Spotts, D7390 YE Chair FEBRUARY 2016 D7390 ROTAR-E-REPORTER 4

COLONIAL PARK Kirk Gibson, the president of the Central Pennsylvania WWII Roundtable was a recent speaker at the Colonial Park Rotary Club. He spoke about the history of the Central Pennsylvania WWII Roundtable which is 13 years old and meets the 1 st Thursday each month at Grace United Methodist Church in Hummelstown. The function of the group is to provide speakers and programs and an awareness of World War II veterans. Also speaking during the Veterans Day program was roundtable director Charlie Lloyd and special guest speaker Sergeant Carol Smith, USMC 2 nd division. (Pictured L-R Colonial Park Rotary Club President Aaron Hoke, Sgt. Following the check presentation Jeff Garner indicated that the members of the Brunnerville Fire Company are grateful for the contribution from the Lititz Rotary Club. The Rotary's motto of "Service above Self" resonates strongly throughout the Fire Service as we share and operate within that motto. This contribution will offset the rising costs of equipment, will train, and will help keep our firefighters safe.
