Williams, PharmD, BCPS, FNLA Prevention of heart attack and stroke remain key goals of primary care. Optimizing antiplatelet and hypertension therapies are two key pharmacologic strategies to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Recent changes to hypertension guidelines in 2013 have created confusion in primary care and have already been questioned by a large, new study published in 2015. Recommendations on the use of aspirin for primary prevention were substantially changed by the United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) in 2016. This program will review the key new recommendations for both blood pressure control and optimal use of aspirin and some of the data underlying those new recommendations. Prescribing Hormonal Birth Control in Oregon Lorinda Anderson, PharmD, BCPS At the beginning of the year a new law allowing pharmacists to prescribe some forms of self-administered hormonal contraception went into effect making Oregon the first state in the country to expand women s access to these forms of effective birth control. This session will cover therapeutic basics of how pharmacists can apply the Board of Pharmacies algorithm and rules into practice, and how these correlate to the practice guidelines for Medical Eligibility Criteria (US MEC). HIV in 2016: An Update for Pharmacists Geoff L Heureux, PharmD, AAHIVP This session introduces the most recent trends in HIV medicine that directly affect pharmacist practice. There will be a brief look at the lifecycle of the HIV virus so that we may understand drug targets and basic principles of antiretroviral therapy. We will examine and identify the DHHS Guideline Preferred Regimens for the treatment of HIV-1. Special attention will be given to recognition of the main class drug interactions and side effect of these preferred regimens. We will then turn our attention to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). Last, we will discuss the role of pharmacists in the retail, ambulatory, and in-patient settings in managing the patient living with HIV.
