Model Research Projects Energy efficiency and thermal comfort of a Prefab Housing Unit Core Team : Naveen Tiwari, Sudhir Misra, K.V. Harish, and K.K. Bajpai Objectives: Retrofitting existing house for improved energy performance: A parametric study by varying material /geometry / environmental conditions etc. Background: An energy efficiency and thermal comfort evaluation of Light Gauge Steel (LGS) house has been done using calibrated simulation. The calibration involved tuning 3d model input parameters of building energy simulation model using TRNSYS 17 simulation software, so that the model can predict outputs of energy demand and temperature close to actual field conditions. Validating these temperature and heating energy demand data through model output against measured data confirmed the accuracy of model in making future predictions. Comparison of simulated and measured indoor air temperature Deliverables: Analysis for retrofitting of existing houses for improved energy performance using parametric study Validation of model through inside surface temperature As per letter by IIT Kanpur dated 9 th May

WORKSHOP ON PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF HOUSING UNITS Dr. Sudhir Misra Department of Civil Engineering Kanpur-208016
Testing is an important part of Quality Control Materials Components Systems Illustrative example For a scheme like the PMAY, quality has to be broken down into components and sub-components: Plumbing, Electrical works, Wood work, finishing Roads, water supply and sewage, waste management 1. The railways use factory made prestressed concrete sleepers 2. Apart from the specifications for constituent materials, there are requirements for performance of sleepers themselves Performance should be key word in judging quality 23
Performance should be in measureable (quantifiable) terms We need to have tests These tests should be carried out under standard conditions Independently, there need to be criteria for acceptable quality at each level (specifications) 24
Quality of concrete Issues related to testing Materials and their choice Proportioning of materials Mixing of materials Delivery of concrete Vibration of concrete Curing of concrete Frequency of sampling Method of sampling Specimen size and shape Testing conditions (loading rate, machine stiffness, etc.) Specimen condition at the time of testing Of course, development of testing protocols for components and systems is a challenge. 25
