Silver Sneakers Basic Chair Class Monday through Friday 9:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The Heart and Soul As I talk with our residents, I often hear about our wonderful and competent staff, the great programming and services, and how much they enjoy living at Cedarlake. One very important focus for our leadership team in 2017 is to improve our communication, support, and recognition with our front-line staff. They really are the Heart and Soul of our community and they are the ones providing the great support and services you receive every day. One of our new initiatives we started in January, is our monthly All Staff Meeting in which we get together to do training, update staff on what s happening, and provide time for questions and feedback. In addition, we ve started a new Employee of the Month Program to provide recognition for our outstanding staff. We want to honor our staff that go above and beyond in providing great services for our residents. We re also rolling out a Wall of Fame area to provide information and recognition for our staff - including pictures of new staff and our employee of the month. I m sure you would agree our additional investment of time, communication, and recognition of our employees is a very worthwhile endeavor for our community. Please let us know when one of our staff does something extraordinary and brings a smile to your face. As always, blessings to all of you! Mark Miron, Executive Director Cardio Class Has Been Cancelled for February. Lack of interest and attendance merits our instructor to cancel at this time. Work Out Room Sign up at the front desk to learn how to safely use the gym equipment. Talk About It: Love Stories Use this discussion topic to reminisce about your past. Talk with your friends about your memories and learn how everyone s experiences were similar or different. Do you have a spectacular real-life love story to share? What are your favorite love stories from television, movies, theater and books? Many classic love stories, such as the films Roman Holiday and Casablanca do not end with the couple together. Do your favorite romance stories end this way, or do you prefer a happy ending together? Are you or have you been married? Was the proposal especially memorable?
7 Health Interesting Pear Facts By Brian Rosso I hope you find the following pear facts interesting and informative. The first pear tree was planted in America in the 1620s. One pear contains only 100 calories. Pears are a good source of vitamin C and fiber. A fresh pear is ripe when the stem area of the pear is soft when gentle pressure is applied. If the middle of the pear is soft to the touch, the pear is overripe. Michigan ranks No. 5 in regard to harvesting pears. The top two pear varieties grown in Michigan are Bartlett and Bosc. Other pear types include: Anjou, sweet with a citrus flavor. Comice, sweet with a buttery taste. Concorde, crunchy with a vanilla flavor. Seckel, small in size and very sweet. Pears are available at all American House locations. Wellness Center News February is Heart Healthy Month. February 2017 John Dominis was born and raised in New York City. After graduating from high school he went on to study at Cooper Union Evening School of Engineering. John worked and attended classes from 1948-1957 to earn his degree in Chemical Engineering. During the years 1952 to 1954, he served in the Army and was stationed in Georgia, New Jersey, New Mexico, and Texas. John received his Master s Degree in Chemical Engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic in 1963. This same year he met Nancy, his wife, in Philadelphia. John has three sons, two of whom were born in Holland and one son born stateside. His career in process design of chemical plants and refineries took him all over Europe and the United States. One of their favorite places to live was Amsterdam because it was old and quaint. John enjoys reading Roman period historical books as well as mysteries. A hobby he enjoys is mosaic making. John also used to be a translator for Bosnian refugees in Memphis, TN, around 2000-2005. John and Nancy would sometimes take in Croatian and Bosnian children with heart issues, as well as their families. This was as John stated, his calling, because of his ability to translate. However, it definitely came back to John and became a heartfelt return, being able to go to the hospital and hold the mothers hands and to wait with them as their children s surgeries took place. He appreciates the kindness of all the American families from his parish that were able to help in this area of need. He has lived at Cedarlake for 2 years and loves how friendly the people are and the good food. John s words of wisdom that he would like to leave off with is take it as it comes.
