Page 2 Clover Connection September 2017 Q: What goes in a 4H Record Book? Page 3 Clover Connection September 2017 National 4H Week Start making plans for your club s activities to celebrate National 4H Week, October 17, 2017. This is a great time to promote 4H in your schools and communities to get more people involved in 4H! Resources can be found at http://4h.org/professionals/marketingresources/4hweektoolkit/. The two most important ideas to emphasize are: 4H is the network of families that grows great kids 4H is for city/town families, too Dickinson County 4H Week Proclamation Signing All Dickinson County 4Hers and their families are invited to attend the signing of a proclamation declaring Dickinson County 4H Week, coinciding with National 4H Week. The proclamation will be signed during the county commission s regular meeting on Thursday, September 28 at 11:00 a.m. Since many of our members won t be able to attend because of school, notes of thanks to the county commissioners for their support of Dickinson County 4H and their acknowledgement of National 4H Week may be sent to commission@dkcoks.org. 48 Hours of 4H Join us this fall in seeing just how much we can give back to our communities! Page 4 Clover Connection September 2017 Officer Training 4H club officer training has been tentatively scheduled for Monday, October 23, at 7 p.m. Please check October s Clover Connection for confirmation of this date and location. Volunteer Screening Process Our 4H program relies on volunteers to accomplish our Positive Youth Development goals. As a part of our commitment to these goals is the desire to provide a safe environment for learning. To help accomplish this, Kansas 4H screens volunteers who work directly with youth. As a potential or current volunteer we ask you to complete the screening process. You will start the process by submitting the Kansas 4H Volunteer Service application. Volunteers who have been through the screening process are asked to submit a volunteer renewal form yearly by January 1. Screened volunteers must be rescreened through the entire process every three years. Forms and further information about the screening process may be found at: http://www.dickinson.kstate.edu/4h/4h_volunteers/index.html. Important Note for Returning Volunteers Returning volunteers who have not done a 4H background check should renew by going to: http://www.dickinson.kstate.edu/4h/4h_volunteers/index.html and completing the Volunteer Application (online), DCF Release Form (return to our office), and Outside Background Check (online). Please contact our office with questions. NOTE: once completed initially, the outside background check only needs to be completed every three years. Online Volunteer Orientation The Volunteer Orientation needs to be completed by everyone applying to be a 4H volunteer. It only needs to be done one time. If you have submitted an application and have not completed the orientation, you will need to be enrolled as an individual in your family s 4HOnline account in order to access the training. Instructions are available at www.dickinson.ksu.edu on the 4H Youth Development > Volunteer Screening page. The course consists of video modules and quizzes. Please let our office know when you have completed the orientation. Kansas State Fair Judging Teams Livestock Judging was held in Manhattan on Saturday, August 19. Page 6 Clover Connection September 2017 Standards for Participation in Kansas FFA and 4H Youth Development Educational Opportunities The purpose of the standards outlined below are to assist in determining eligible participation in FFA and/or 4H Youth Development learning experiences. Both 4H and Agriculture Education/FFA promote teaching youth life skills. Each program exists to maximize the participants knowledge of agriculture and its value to our communities while educating the young people to become productive citizens. Eligible youth may participate in both 4H and FFA but should avoid duplication. The following standards of participation are used in delivering the 4H and FFA programs in Kansas. 1. Agriculture Education teachers, FFA Advisors, Extension staff and local volunteers are encouraged to cooperate in sharing information and resources to provide educational opportunities for youth. 2. When young people are members of both 4H and FFA, they must plan and manage separate projects, and/or supervised agriculture experiences (SAE) programs. 3. FFA and 4H members may enroll in the same area of experience in 4H and FFA, however; participants cannot identify, nominate, manage, keep records on, or exhibit the same plants, animals, etc. in both organizations. Members must designate exhibits as either FFA or 4H at weighin, registration or similar deadline. 4. Members may participate in judging contests and related events in FFA and 4H but cannot represent both organizations at a contest, show or event at the same time. 5. When 4H and FFA are conducting collaborating activities, both the 4H and FFA organizations must be represented through emblems and information on all signs, print materials and awards. 6. Collaborating FFA and 4H activities or events are obligated to have supervision representation from both organizations. The standards are in agreement with Kansas 4H and FFA and hereby affirmed by members and professionals in order to participate in either educational program. 4H Club New Family Mentors In 4H we learn by doing which can often cause new families to feel lost until they ve experienced a 4H event or activity. To help ease their anxiety and keep our new families engaged, clubs are encouraged to recruit an adult volunteer (who is not currently an organizational leader) to serve as a New Family Mentor. This individual will be responsible for checking in with new 4H families and help them understand more about Dickinson County 4H. Let us know who your club s new family mentor is when you turn in your club leader list by December 1! Cloverbud Information Kansas State Research and Extension and 4H Youth Development offers 4H Cloverbuds, an educational program designed specifically for youth ages five and six. Children of this age have distinctive learning characteristics and developmental needs that are different from older youth who participate in 4H. That is why the 4H Cloverbud program is designed with specific educational objectives and policies focused on the 5 and 6yearold child. o 4H Cloverbuds is activityfocused, rather than projectfocused. o The 4H Cloverbud programming is cooperative, rather than competitive. o 4H Cloverbud exhibits can be showcased at fairs and public events, but a 4H Cloverbud member may not participate as a competitive exhibitor in traditional 4H events. o A ratio of two adults to 12 4H Cloverbud members (2:12) is required. o 4H Cloverbuds requires a safe environment. Requirements for Dickinson County: Dickinson County 4H clubs will only be able to enroll Cloverbud members if they have an active Cloverbud leader who is willing to work with the Cloverbud members on active, handson experiences during the regular club meeting. Cloverbuds are still encouraged to be a part of roll call, recreation, and the program, but are not to be expected to sit through the club business meeting. Please contact Jill to schedule training for new leaders. Cloverbuds will only be able to exhibit animals on the approved state list at the fair. If you haven t already, start recruiting your club Cloverbud leader now! Find us on Facebook! Like KState Research & Extension Dickinson County for office updates and news.
