SO2 CORPS - RAEME OR JOHN HALSTEAD (02) 6055 2193 / 6055 4308 john.halstead@defence.gov.au No doubt you have just arrived back to work and sat through the mandatory induction programs. The process is becoming more enjoyable each year with efforts to reduce the overall period spent conducting the briefs. It is also a good opportunity to have a look and chat to those who return and in some cases renew old acquaintances with new march in personnel as well as meet new unit members for the first time. On that note it seems that I am flying solo for a while at least this year. Graham Anderson has moved on over to ASLO and I wish him the best of luck in his endeavours over there. That means that if you have his email accounts as your main POC here you would be well advised to change it to mine listed above. That action is the prime reason I am providing this newsletter early this year. There are some activities coming up this year that will require some shorter deadlines and earlier reactions if they are to be completed successfully. Corps Conference. As it happens, I am planning to conduct a Corps Conference here in AWMA over the period 29, 30,31 Oct. It will come with most of the usual suspects: a. church parade, b. arrival BBQ, c. seminar with VL on yet to be determined theme, d. formal dinner, and e. Corps committee meeting. You now have the date and place, give some thought to attending and plan now. Be prepared to react when I ask for confirmation of attendance. The Craftsman Magazine. Please provide articles as you have them. I am happy to file them throughout the year for inclusion at the next edition. The magazine is funded through advertising; remember the more interesting the magazine is the easier it is to sell advertising and therefore greater potential to keep it cost neutral. Keep the articles coming by sending them directly to me at my email account. Be aware for potential new advertisers an direct any interest my way as well. RAEME Port. The 2013 RAEME Port was a great success and thanks to the team at 7 RAR for their efforts. Please refer to Corps Instruction 17 on the RAEME web page for detail on how the RAEME Port is managed. There is a significant financial benefit to units from sponsoring and managing the port and the proceeds can 2

make the difference between an average unit social event and a spectacular one. I am calling for nominations from units wanting to sponsor the port for 2014 now. Refer CI 17 for detail. Corps History Project (CHP) I would like to run a raffle across the Corps. It would be managed using the same process as the Corps Port. In other words, I am calling for a volunteer unit to run the raffle. The unit will receive 25% of the proceeds after costs and the remainder will go toward the CHP. The prize will consist of an original copy of Craftsmen of the Australian Army, The Story of RAEME by Theo Baker recently selling on ebay for approximately $350.00. In addition, the winner will receive a pewter miniature Corps Centre Piece valued at $200. Second prize will be a framed copy of the Corps painting complete with an embedded corps coin. Units interested in managing the raffle should contact me via email as soon as possible IOT get the ball rolling. Corps Funds. At present the Corps enjoys financial support from approximately 10% of members yearly. That is: very few personnel are paying into Corps subscriptions. It is voluntary activity and details on how you can contribute are listed later in this newsletter. You will also find information listed at Corps Instruction 3. What s in it for me? The Corps has investments and with subscriptions this generates an income. 50% of that income is returned to RAEME members by way of disbursements around October each year and through the RAEME Regional Reps. Regional units are able to bid for financial support or the Regional Rep may expend the funds on anything for the betterment of RAEME members in the region. You may have experienced partial sponsorship at RAEME Birthday celebrations as a result. Remember this 50% return has nothing to do with the number of subscribers in the region and therefore subscribers and non scribers to Corps Funds benefit from the disbursement. Another 25% of the income is set aside as working capital for the year. This covers such things as: a. the annual awards (ie: Cfn of the Year totalling 16 prizes in 2013 @ $200.00 each); b. requests for financial support from units other than disbursements (sponsorship at sporting activities or improvements to unit areas); c. postage, merchandise purchases, personnel crisis support and some minor admin expenses not covered by ACMS. When units request financial support for an activity we review the number of financial members in that unit IOT provide some balance for the subscribers. The remaining 25% is rolled into investments. The committee is very conscious of perceptions and is keen to provide value to the members. Recently we introduced a Corps Coin. All new members of RAEME are issued a Corps Coin when they qualify through RMC or ASEME. 3

They are also encouraged to complete an application to subscribe to Corps Funds at the same time. Financial subscribers are able to purchase the coins from me at a cost of $5.00 which is below cost and non financial subscribers are charged $10.00. The, What s in it for Me question is answered by the more subscribers we have the greater the strength of the fund and the more we can do for you personally and as a group. I welcome contributions from members of the Corps on ideas you may have to improve any of the services provided. J. Halstead SO2 Corps 4

Use Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 at home. enjoy it while it lasts. from: http://ciogintranet/organisation/ctod/hsb/pages/default.aspx Under the previous Microsoft Volume Sourcing Arrangement, Commonwealth agencies personnel had the ability to access the Home Use Program (HUP) for Microsoft Office products. The HUP offers a licence for the Microsoft Office software to be installed on the home computer of an employee of a Commonwealth agency. The employee s usage rights are tied to continued employment with the Commonwealth agency, and end with termination of employment, termination or expiration of Software Assurance coverage for the copy of the corresponding desktop application that the employee uses at work. Is HUP available to Defence Personnel? Yes, and Microsoft agreed in October 2013 to make available to Commonwealth employees, Microsoft Office Professional software for use at home until June 2014, the Microsoft licence key will expire on this date. Interim Arrangement Under the Microsoft Volume Sourcing Arrangement (VSA II) the Microsoft Home Use Program (HUP) offers Defence personnel access to a single copy of Office Professional Plus 2013 for a nominal fee (+ shipping and handling), to be installed on your home computer. The HUP is a separate commercial offering made by Microsoft to Defence personnel, and purchases made under the HUP are a business transaction between Microsoft and the individual Defence personnel. Defence is not involved in HUP transactions and accepts no responsibility for the operation of the HUP or its continued availability. Access to the HUP can be made by Defence personnel direct to the Microsoft website at: https://hup.microsoft.com/, with online help directions to complete the transaction. Note that it is necessary to enter your @Defence email address and insert the temporary HUP program code 9E344CC2BF. These details are used by Microsoft to verify individuals as Defence personnel. 10
