Josephine Community Libraries, Inc. 200 NW C Street Grants Pass, Oregon 97526 My library works for me. (541) 476-0571 info@josephinelibrary.org www.josephinelibrary.org Call for Artists First Chapters: 21 st -Century Children s Library Project Josephine Community Libraries, Inc. seeks fine artwork for its children s library in Grants Pass that communicates a love of reading and appreciation for books through artistic multi-media materials and concept content. Qualifications, based on examples of previous work, are sought from artists interested in the commission of artwork for the children s library signature art project for the Grants Pass branch of Josephine Community Libraries. Background The libraries in Josephine County closed on May 17, 2007. Four months later, committed community members formed Josephine Community Libraries, Inc. (JCLI), a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring long-term library services for every county resident. By December 2009, JCLI had reopened all four shuttered locations. In November 2014, citizens placed a measure on the ballot to permanently fund the libraries, which was defeated by 53 percent of the vote. Today, the libraries continue to operate thanks to generous donations and the heroic contributions of more than 360 volunteers annually. In the first half of 2016, with the support of grants and community donors, Josephine Community Libraries renovated the Grants Pass children s library, modernizing the 1960s-style children s area and creating an exploratory, flexible, multimedia space that provides an effective environment for a variety of children s literacy programs conducive to children of different age groups. Project goal The newly renovated children s library space communicates to residents that the community is invested in early literacy and lifelong learning. The integration of artwork within the children s library is intended to enhance the patrons experience and make the space more colorful, celebrating our community s love of reading and investment in its youth. Art specifications The primary project is the creation of an original piece of art to hang on the wall in an area of 19'4" wide x 4' high (the height to the ceiling is 5'). The art may be a relief or two-dimensional rendering on canvas or board, or a metal or glass sculpture as a wall hanging. No elements should hang from the ceiling. All elements must be secured to the wall. All elements must be safe and consider movement of the public, especially children. The following photo shows the space where the art will hang above the bookcase and between the bulletin boards. Budget The budget for the Grants Pass children s library signature art is $5,000 for the project. This budget amount will include artist fees, fabrication costs, installation, documentation, and other project costs. Eligibility All artists and artist teams are eligible to apply.
