Qualifications, based on examples of previous work, are sought from artists interested in the commission of artwork for the children s library signature art project for the Grants Pass branch of Josephine Community Libraries. Background The libraries in Josephine County closed on May 17, 2007. Four months later, committed community members formed Josephine Community Libraries, Inc. (JCLI), a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring long-term library services for every county resident. By December 2009, JCLI had reopened all four shuttered locations. In November 2014, citizens placed a measure on the ballot to permanently fund the libraries, which was defeated by 53 percent of the vote. Today, the libraries continue to operate thanks to generous donations and the heroic contributions of more than 360 volunteers annually. In the first half of 2016, with the support of grants and community donors, Josephine Community Libraries renovated the Grants Pass children s library, modernizing the 1960s-style children s area and creating an exploratory, flexible, multimedia space that provides an effective environment for a variety of children s literacy programs conducive to children of different age groups. Project goal The newly renovated children s library space communicates to residents that the community is invested in early literacy and lifelong learning. The integration of artwork within the children s library is intended to enhance the patrons experience and make the space more colorful, celebrating our community s love of reading and investment in its youth.
