A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO BERNIE JONES Almost four years ago, Bernie Jones launched the Recitals at Bishop and Forums at Bishop series, bringing our community a host of top-notch presentations and performances from area speakers and musicians. We give much gratitude to Bernie for his work in bringing these many wonderful events to us. They have brought such joy to us all and we appreciate his generous contributions! PRESENTED BY MARGARET HALL: HOW MISS ETHEL S GARDEN CAME TO BE THE ORIGINS OF THE GARDENS AT BISHOP SPENCER PLACE Our beautiful gardens provide a stunning backdrop to our community and offer a place of tranquility for us all. Come learn about the origins of our gardens through a presentation by Margaret Weatherly Hall. Hall will be sharing information on her two cousins, Virginia and Sarah Weatherly, and their mother Ethel, and how the gardens at Bishop Spencer Place are inspired by this family. Hall is a member of The Westport Garden Club and currently serves on the Executive Committee of The Garden Club of America, a national organization of 200 member clubs with 15,000 members. She is also a Floral Design and Photography judge for the Garden Club of America and travels all over the United States in this capacity. Don t miss this special opportunity to get the inside scoop on how our beautiful gardens came to be! Join us on Friday, February 15, at 1:30 in the Westport Room. 3

CHAPLAIN S CORNER Yes, it s that time of year again the time for love. While the history of Valentine s Day is sometimes debated, it is probably linked to a Catholic saint named Saint Valentine. The origin of Valentine s Day is complicated because there are usually three Saint Valentines one a priest, one a bishop, and little is known about the third. All three, unfortunately, died as a martyr for their faith. Whatever the background, Valentine s Day is clearly a popular holiday. According to the Nielsen Company, more than 58 million pounds of chocolate candy will be sold during Valentine s week. And did you know that 180 million valentines are exchanged every year? Florists, too, love Valentine s Day Americans spend $24 million on roses alone! Besides helping the economy, Valentine s Day is a pleasant break during the bleak winter months, not to mention that it is an excellent opportunity to tell people that we love them. Of course, we can do that every day; nevertheless, setting aside a day designed specifically to express our love for others isn t a bad idea. Most of us will not receive a dozen roses or sparkling diamond or even a box of Russell Stover s, but material gifts are not the real point. When you think about it, every card and gift is an acknowledgement of love, and every single one of us wants to be loved. And, of course, we are loved. We are loved totally and unconditionally by God, who gifts us every morning with a new opportunity to share that love with others. When we accept God s love that is given to us freely, abundantly, and consistently, we respond by passing on that love that fills us so richly. May this Valentine s Day remind us that just as we are joyfully loved, extending that love makes all of our lives more meaningful. Whether we send a card or give a hug, love is the gift that must be shared. Chaplain Linda Yeager BIBLE STUDY WITH CHAPLAIN LINDA IN FEBRUARY In the New Testament, the four gospel books provide many similarities but there are also important differences. We will discover Matthew s emphases in our winter Bible study, Friday, February 1, 8, and 22, at 1:30 in the Westport Room. We will see that Matthew has a lot to say about the future kingdom of heaven, but he also believes that disciples must be citizens of that kingdom right now by the way they live their lives. Please join us for discussion and discovery, facilitated by Chaplain Linda. ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE Wednesday, February 13 4:00-5:00 The Chapel of The Epiphany 4

FRED HARTMAN PRESENTS: A TRAVELOGUE ON LONDON World traveler Fred Hartman has made many visits to 19 countries, including 11 major trips to Europe each averaging five weeks. London is a fascinating global capital in which Hartman has spent much time, and he is coming to share his experiences with us this month. Hartman is an expert photographer, and he will use his photos to take us through London stepby-step with personal narrations. Join us on Monday, February 11, at 2:00 in the Westport Room you won t want to miss this special trip to London! THE GREY NOTES JAZZ COMBO RETURNS TO BSP Back by popular demand! The Grey Notes Jazz Combo will be performing jazz standards and swing music at a very special concert. Band leader Max Hofmeister started the combo in honor of his grandfather, who spent his last year at the Forum and always loved the big band swing music of the 1940s. The Combo s first gig was at the Forum and their performances have grown from there. Hofmeister is a member of his school s jazz band, so he recruited others from the band to join his combo including drummer Peter Andresen, grandson of resident Ann Andresen! The Grey Notes delight audiences at retirement communities, churches, charity events and school concerts. Most recently, they performed at an art fair at City Hall and at a fashion show in the Crossroads. Hofmeister has written a few original compositions for the band, which we will enjoy along with the classics! You won t want to miss this special concert at 3:15 on Tuesday, February 5, in the Madison Living Room. WE RE GOING GREEN STAY IN TOUCH ELECTRONICALLY! Did you know our monthly Ambassador is available electronically? If you are currently receiving this by mail, we would love to add you to our email list. Please send your email address to us today to start receiving these electronic communications. Contact Mendi Hanna by email at mhanna@bishopspencerplace.org or by phone at 816-595-5878. 9

Join us at 3:00 on Thursday, February 28, in the Madison Living Room for this swinging throwback to a time when the Rat Pack ruled the scene! BSP BOOK CLUB FEBRUARY MEETING Due to calendar conflicts, this month the BSP Book Club will meet on Monday, February 18, at 1:30 in the Westport Room (rather than on the third Friday, as is typical).
