The South Dakota State University wrestling team opens the dual portion of its schedule Friday night, hosting Minnesota in a matchup between nationally ranked teams. Action is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Frost Arena. The dual can be viewed online via the FloWrestling.org subscription site. The Jackrabbits, ranked 16th in this week s National Wrestling Coaches Association/USA Today Division I poll, ended the 2016-17 season with a 14-5 dual record. SDSU returns eight starters from a season ago. Minnesota, meanwhile, enters Friday s dual ranked sixth. The Golden Gophers are 1-0 in duals so far this season after posting a 29-6 home win over Air Force on Nov. 12. THE SERIES: Minnesota has held the upper hand over the Jackrabbits in dual action, leading the all-time series, which dates back to the 1949-50 season, by a 23-4 count. SDSU s last victory over the Golden Gophers was a 23-18 triumph during the 1974-75 campaign. The two programs met Nov. 19, 2016, in Minneapolis, in a dual that was not decided until the final bout. Minnesota won the final four matches, including the decisive match at heavyweight, to edge South Dakota State, 18-17. SDSU won five of the first six matches on the night, including major decisions by returning NCAA qualifiers Seth Gross and Alex Kocer. Gross, ranked seventh at 133 pounds, defeated Mitch McKee, 12-3, while Kocer scored a 10-2 major decision. Ben Gillette opened the dual with an 8-1 decision over Skyler Petry at 125 pounds and Colin Holler scored a 6-4 decision over 18th-ranked Jake Short at 157 pounds. Luke Zilverberg gave SDSU a 17-3 lead with a 3-1 decision over Brandon Kingsley in the 165- pound bout. The Minnesota comeback began at 174 pounds, where Nick Wanzek edged David Kocer of SDSU, 3-2, in a match between ranked wrestlers. The Golden Gophers also had the upper hand in another battle between two nationally ranked wrestlers at 197 pounds, where Minnesota s second-ranked Brett Pfarr defeated fifth-ranked Nate Rotert, 7-0, to pull to within 17-12 in the team score. The dual remained up for grabs entering the heavyweight bout, where fifth-ranked Michael Kroells of Minnesota met the Jackrabbits' Alex Macki. Unfortunately for the Jackrabbits, Macki was assessed multiple stalling calls in the match, leading to his disqualification and giving the Golden Gophers six team points to pull out the one-point victory. #16 Minnesota 18, #20 South Dakota State 17 125: Ben Gillette (SDSU) dec. The Jackrabbits opened the 2017-18 season with a No. 16 ranking in the first NWCA/ USA Today Division I Coaches Poll, and maintain that position in this week s rankings. The Jackrabbits also are ranked 14th by FloWrestling, 15th by both WIN Magazine and Intermat, and 16th by TrackWrestling. Individually, all four of the Jackrabbits returning national qualifiers appear in at least one Division I poll, highlighted by Seth Gross No. 1 ranking by four rating services. Three-time NCAA qualifier Nate Rotert at 197 pounds is ranked eighth by both Intermat and FloWrestling, as well as ninth by WIN Magazine and 11th by TrackWrestling, while 174- pound senior David Kocer is ranked as high as 10th by FloWrestling, followed by a 15thplace showing by Intermat and 20th-place showings in the TrackWrestling and WIN Magazine rankings. A Wagner native, Kocer is a two-time national qualifier. Completing the Jackrabbit rankings is Luke Zilverberg, who is dropping down to the 157- pound weight class for his senior season. An NCAA qualifer at 165 pounds during the 2016-17 season, the Belle Plaine, Minnesota, native checks in at No. 14 in this week s FloWrestling rankings. He also stands 17th in the TrackWrestling rankings and 18th in both the Intermat and WIN Magazine surveys. BISON OPEN RECAP: Four South Dakota State University wrestlers won titles and five others reached the championship bouts of their respective weight classes during competition Nov. 11 at the Bison Open in Fargo, North Dakota. Leading the way for the Jackrabbits was top-ranked Seth Gross, who pinned all three of his opponents en route to winning the 133-pound title. The NCAA runner-up at 133 pounds last season, Gross defeated each of his first two opponents in less than a minute before pinning host North Dakota State s McGwire Midkiff in 4 minutes, 32 seconds in the title bout. Also at 133 pounds, freshman Rylee Molitor placed third with a 3-1 record on the day. Winning at 149 pounds was redshirt freshman Colten Carlson, who defeated three NDSU wrestlers on his way to the title. Carlson opened with a 6-4 win over the Bison s Gavin Sutton, then scored a 12-0 major decision over Minot State's Tanner Crissler. In the semifinals, Carlson knocked off Kyle Gliva with a third-period pin. The championship bout against Mitchell Bengston ended 105 seconds into the match, with Carlson declared the winner by injury default. Kocer posted a 19-4 technical fall over North Dakota State's Michael Otomo in the finals. The 184-pound championship was an all-jackrabbit affair with Martin Mueller and Brady Ayers squaring off. A sophomore, Mueller held the upper hand over the senior Ayers throughout the match, notching a 13-3 victory by major decision. Mueller posted a 4-0 record in his first competition of the season. At 157 pounds, the title bout was contested between a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers in North Dakota State s Clayton Ream and the Jackrabbits' Luke Zilverberg. CALDWELL JOINS COACHING STAFF: South Dakota State University head wrestling coach Chris Bono announced in mid-september the hiring of Cody Caldwell as an assistant coach. He replaced A.J. Schopp, who accepted a coaching position at Purdue. Cody brings exactly what we need to SDSU, Bono said. He comes from a wrestling-rich family and will have a huge presence in recruiting in the state of Iowa. He is a bigger guy who can work with our upper weights, and his work ethic and knowledge of the sport is very impressive. Caldwell spent the 2016-17 season as a graduate assistant coach at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, which won its sixth consecutive NAIA national title. He helped mentor 12 All-Americans, including five individual national champions as the Vikings set a team scoring record. In addition, Caldwell served as a coach for the Viking Wrestling Club, which trained junior and senior wrestlers for high-level competitions, including the U.S. Open, World Team Trials and the Dave Schultz Memorial International. As a collegiate wrestler, Caldwell was a four-year starter and team captain at the University of Northern Iowa. A native of Waverly, Iowa, he qualified for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in 2014 at 174 pounds. COACH BONO: Chris Bono has engineered a successful rebuilding process during his tenure as head coach of the South Dakota State University wrestling team and has the program s sights set high for the 2017-18 campaign. Entering his sixth season, Bono has helped mentor Jackrabbit wrestlers to qualify for the NCAA Championships 17 times, including a program-best five wrestlers during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. At the 2017 NCAA Championships, Seth Gross finished as runner-up at 133 pounds and Alex Kocer placed eighth at 149 pounds, giving SDSU its first All- Americans in the Division I era. As a team, the Jackrabbits posted their highest-ever finish at the NCAA Division I Championships with a 16th-place showing. SDSU was ranked nationally for all but the first week of the 2016-17 season, climbing as high as No. 16 in the USA Today/NWCA Top 25. Facing a challenging schedule, the Jackrabbits posted a 14-5 dual record, including an 8-1 mark against Big 12 Conference opponents. SDSU also was selected as a host site for the 2017 NWCA National Duals Championship Series. The Jackrabbits notched a third-place finish at the 2017 Big 12 Wrestling Championship, with Seth Gross being named the tournament s Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 133-pound title. Bono was also honored as the Big 12 Coach of the Year. In dual competition, Bono has led the Jackrabbits to a 50-39 record that includes three consecutive winning seasons for the first time at the Division I level.
