7 Remember Me? Mention the character Count Dracula, and movie fans will likely picture Bela Lugosi. He was born Bela Blasko on Oct. 20, 1882, in Lugos, Hungary (now Romania). As a teen, he studied at an acting academy in Budapest, then joined the Hungarian National Theatre. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1921. He made his U.S. stage debut in 1922, but because he didn t speak English well, he learned his lines phonetically. Lugosi gained national acclaim for his portrayal of novelist Bram Stoker s vampire count in Dracula. He starred in the Broadway production, then the 1931 film. Both handsome and sinister, with his fitting accent, his performance has become the timeless standard for the character.
