He has 17 years of experience in clinical psychology care. He is a graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi, where he received his Master s degree in clinical psychology. He completed his internship at Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee, Fla. He also worked at Charles Harris, Ph.D. Mississippi State Hospital in Whitfield, Miss., in forensic psychology for three years. Dr. Harris then returned to the Gulf Coast to practice psychology at his clinic in Ocean Springs. We re happy to have Dr. Harris as a part of our team at SCNRC! Veterans Day activities Stone County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will be celebrating Veterans Day in a big way! Mr. Ray and Andy Blanchard will give a presentation, and several other veterans will visit our facility on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. We thank and appreciate all of our veterans for their incredible sacrifice and service! The Stone Villager County Connection Shelia Warren In honor of American Diabetes Month, Stone County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is taking a look at how to prevent and treat diabetes. Diabetes is a common disease, yet every individual needs unique care. LOWERING YOUR RISK There are some risk factors for diabetes that you can t change, including age, race, gender and family history. Being aware of these risk factors can help you take smart steps to lower your risk. Additionally, there are several other ways you can prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes. Manage your weight. Staying at a healthy weight can help you prevent and manage problems like Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol and high blood glucose. Eat healthy. Eating healthy is one of the most important things you can do to lower your risk for Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Be physically active. Physical activity can do a lot for you, even if you haven t been very active lately. Manage your blood glucose. By keeping your blood glucose (sugar) in check, you can help prevent and manage Type 2 diabetes. Monitor your blood pressure. High blood pressure raises your risk for heart disease, stroke and other problems. Watch your cholesterol. Unhealthy cholesterol levels can raise your risk for Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Don t smoke. Smoking causes a lot of problems in your body and can raise your risk of heart attack or stroke. GETTING TREATMENT Those living with diabetes should be aware of the importance of blood glucose testing and available medications. People with Type 1 diabetes must use insulin. For those with Type 2 diabetes, your doctor may need to prescribe oral medications and/or insulin to help you meet your target blood glucose levels. November 2014 David Northington, DO, Medical Director Internal Medicine While the odds of an Ebola case occurring in Mississippi are slim, medical and public health professionals across the state, including the Stone County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center staff, have been diligently reviewing their infectious disease procedures. In addition, they have been working to raise public awareness of ways to stay safe from diseases such as Ebola to conditions like the common flu. Here are some tips from the CDC to protect you and your family members: Wash hands or use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer frequently. From the Desk of the medical Director : Protecting Yourself from ebola and other Infectious Diseases The 2014 Ebola epidemic is the largest in history, affecting multiple countries in West Africa. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and their partners are taking extensive precautions to prevent the further spread of Ebola within the United States. Avoid contact with blood and body fluids of any person, particularly someone who is sick. Do not handle items that may have come in contact with an infected person s blood or body fluids. Do not touch bats and nonhuman primates or their blood and fluids. Do not touch or eat raw meat prepared from these animals. Seek medical care immediately if you develop fever (temperature of 100.4 F/38.0 C or higher) and any of the other symptoms listed in the chart to the right. If you are experiencing symptoms, limit contact with other people until you go to the doctor. Do not travel anywhere but to a healthcare facility. Recipe of the Month from resident anita Finely Mom s Candied Yams with Caramel Ingredients: 1 (15 oz.) can sweet potatoes, drained and mashed 1 (8 oz.) can crushed pineapple, drained 3 tbsp. butter 2 tbsp. brown sugar ¼ tsp. salt 1 egg, beaten ½ tsp. ground cinnamon 4 oz. caramel topping 2 C marshmallows, divided Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 F (175 C). 2. Mix sweet potatoes, pineapple, butter, brown sugar, salt, egg and cinnamon together in a bowl. 3. Pour half of the sweet potato mixture into a 9 x9 casserole dish. Pour caramel sauce over sweet potatoes. Top with one cup of marshmallows. 4. Spread the remaining sweet potato mixture over marshmallow layer. 5. Bake for 30 minutes. 6.
