Clinical Nurse Managers, Staff Nurses, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Healthcare Assistants, Clinical Placement Co-ordinators, Student Nurses, working in the Mid-Western Regional Hospital. 4.0 Procedure Process 4. 1 Hair must be worn off the co llar and back from the face. Hai r should be tied up, it must be done so, neatly and tidy. Hair accessories must be navy/white in colour and discreet in size. Male nurses must wear their hair t'idy and well groomed. Hair colour should be discreet. 4.2 Uniforms must be the agreed colour and style Please refer to (Appendix I Qual ified staff, and appendix 3 for studen t nurses) Uni form material must only be purchased from accepted unifonn suppliers (Appendi x 2). Exception: Student nurses see appendix 3, unifonns provided. Cardigans must be navy in colour and removed in all clinical areas. 4. 3 Plain navylblack socks must be worn. lof7
4.4 Unifor ms must not be wo rn outside of the Hospital. 4.5 Nails must be kept short and unpolished. 4.6 The following jewellery will only be accepted;. 4.6.1 One pair of stud earrings (on lower ear lobes only). 4.6.2 One wedding band. 4.6.3 Fob watch. 4.7 Navylblack rubber soled, closed shoes must only be worn. These must be clean and polished. Sandals not pennitted. 4.8 Each nurse must wear a hospi tal identification badge with their name and position clearly recognisable. 4.9 Tattoos must not be visible at any time. 4.10 Mobile phones should not be visible or carri ed in uniform pockets. 4.11 All I. D. Badges must be returned to the hospital on resignation. 5.0 Infectio n Control 5.1 Fabric must be capable of withstanding water temperatures of at least 65c (Washing Machine) and washed separately from other items 5.2 Following laundering, when the uniform is dried, it should be ironed with a hot iron and stored folded and flat in a fresh, unused plastic bag and sealed. 5.3 Uniforms must be carried separately from other items 5.4. Clean and dirty uniforms should be segregated appropriately 5.5. Protect uniform with plastic apron when assisting patients with toileting, bathing or any activity which may result in the dispersal of pathogens (e.g. bed making) and/or procedures causing splashing of blood and body fluids 5.6 Staff must change out of their unifonn at the end of each shift using hospital facilities. 5.7 Hand hygiene before donning the uniform 5.8 Hand hygiene after handling fabric following the prompt removal of the unifonn 5.9 Freshly laundered clothing should be worn for each shift. 20f7

St udents are provided on a once off basis with the equivalent of four two piece uniforms on commencing placement. A navy cardigan/jacket may be provided subject to funding. 2. SSc. General Students: For students who prior to September 2006 cohort: Unifoml IS Wh ite tunic, wh ite trousers (teredo stripe fabric) 3. From September 2006 the trouser colour wi ll change to Royal Blue for Students in the 2006 cohort. Students in other years prior to 2006 may wear Royal Blue trousers if they wish to change from September 2006. 4. Cardigans/j acket should be navy in colour. 5. Only black or navy rubber soled, low heeled, closed shoes may be worn (in adherence with health and safety requirements). 6. Hair must be worn off the co ll ar and back from the face (tied up if necessary). Hai r accessories must be di screet in size and navy in colour. Hair should be a natural colour. 7. Cardigans/jacket must be removed in all clinical areas. Uniform should be neat and tidy at all times. 8. For client and personal health and safety, uniforms must not be worn outside of the hospital grounds. 9. Changing rooms are provided. A refundable deposit secures a locker. 10. Nails must be kept short and unpolished. Tattoos must not be visible at any time. 11. Inappropriate jewellery can cause skin damage to patients and is a potential source of infection. The follow ing jewellery wi ll only be accepted: - I. One pair of stud earrings (on lower ear lobes only). II. One wedding band. III. Fob watch. 12. Each nurse must wear the approved hospital identification badge, which will be supplied by the health service provider. 50f7
13. Uniforms are not required during certain placements outside the acute hospital setting i.e Community Health placements and Day Centres. Neat, professional dress code is required.
