MIDWEST MIDWEEK Brothers of Holy Cross Midwest Province - P.O. Box 460 Notre Dame, Indiana 46556-0460 April 29, 2015 Brother Charles Bernard Gregg, C.S.C. I would like to extend condolences on behalf of the Brothers of Holy Cross to Brother Charles sister Patricia and her children, John and Andrea and their families, his extended family from Ohio and Kentucky and his friends. Charles was a dedicated religious who wore many hats during his time in Holy Cross. He taught for many years in South Bend, Chicago, Evansville, Akron, and Louisville. He was a youth minister for a time in Michigan. He became a librarian for Holy Cross College. After he retired, he was a substitute teacher at Marian High School. Then he agreed to become my assistant at Dujarie House and Schubert Villa where he accompanied Brothers to the emergency room no matter what time of day or night, prayed with the dying, encouraged the living and was a source of spiritual support for me. In his spare time on Fridays, he volunteered at St. Augustine s soup kitchen. Charles was a man who encountered failures in his life, but faced them with courage and determination. After struggling with alcohol addiction, he dedicated himself to assisting others trying to maintain sobriety through the AA program here in South Bend. He felt that he had learned much about himself and his relationship to God through the program and felt he was called to share this knowledge with his fellow recovering addicts. Anyone who ever met Charles knows that he was not shy about stating his opinion about any topic. I would guess that is an occupational hazard for anyone who was a librarian before the electronic age of Google search and other on-line websites since librarians liked to think they had all the answers. Charles was proud to have been a librarian and was frequently visited by former Holy Cross College students he had befriended while assisting them in the library.

Charles regularly participated in the Mass either at Corpus Christi parish or here in this chapel. He frequently complained about having to be at the Sunday vigil mass, but still showed up. I think despite his protests that he loved getting dressed up in his white robe and telling the celebrant what to do particularly at funerals. Perhaps that came from his background of directing theater productions in schools. Charles was a man of prayer who heeded the biblical admonition not to make a big show of praying particularly in public. He loved working at St. Augustine s soup kitchen. He found working with his fellow Brothers at Schubert Villa challenging and trying of his patience, but he didn t give up. Having struggled with an addiction, he felt a life changing experience at Guest House where he was able to recover a sense of perspective and humility. Hopefully the following poem will illustrate Charles before Guest House. I had a dream that death came the other night And Heaven s gate swung wide open. With kindly grace an angel ushered me inside; and there to my astonishment stood folks I had known on earth and some I had judged and labeled unfit and of little worth. Indignant words rose to my lips but were never set free; for every face showed stunned surprise, not one expected me. Anonymous I hope, Charles, that no one was surprised to see you. Br. Thomas Cunningham - 2 -

Brother Charles Bernard Gregg, C.S.C. January 19, 1942 April 19, 2015 Brother Charles Bernard Gregg, C.S.C., age 73, died on April 19, 2015 at his home in the Maple Lane Apartments, in South Bend, Indiana. He was born in Akron, Ohio on January 19, 1942, the son of Francis and Dorothy (Joles) Gregg. He attended St. Paul s Elementary School and graduated from St. Mary s High School in Akron in June 1958. He studied for a year at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio and then transferred to the University of Akron for 3 years where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in June 1962. He taught English and History for 4 years in the Akron Public School District until May 1966. He joined the Army that summer and served in Fort Benning, Georgia, receiving an honorable medical discharge after 4 months. He followed a calling to join the religious life as a Holy Cross Brother and entered the juniorate program at Holy Cross Junior College on October 25, 1966. He went to St. Joseph s Novitiate in Rolling Prairie, Indiana on January 25, 1967 and completed his religious training by pronouncing his first vows as a Brother of Holy Cross on August 16, 1968. Since Charles was an experienced teacher he was assigned to St. Joseph s High School in South Bend where he taught for five years. He was recently honored by one of the graduating classes as a favorite teacher at their 25 th reunion. Charles attended summer schools at Notre Dame and in 1973 earned a Master of Arts degree in English. He taught at Holy Trinity High in Chicago for a year, at Archbishop Hoban High in Akron for 6 years, and Reitz Memorial High in Evansville for a year. In 1981, he took a sabbatical from teaching and worked in youth ministry at St. John the Baptist Church in Hartland, Michigan. In 1982, Charles joined the faculty of Bishop David High School, where he taught for the next 12 years (including the 10 years when the school was re-named Holy Cross High School). He was an enthusiastic teacher. His advanced literature class was popular. Many times former students would return and ask his help on assignments which they had at the University of Louisville. Charles attended the University of Indiana during summers and in 1988 earned a Master of Library Science degree. The degree provided the foundation for the position, in 1994, as Director of the Library at Holy Cross College in Notre Dame. His skill in organization and - 3 -

helpfulness in finding resources were utilized by many students for the 12 years he served. Charles served as the administrative assistant for Provincial Br Bob Fillmore for 2 years. He lived at Holy Cross Village for 16 years and volunteered, with other generous brothers at Notre Dame, who faithfully worked at the weekly soup kitchen of St. Augustine s Parish. He also taught in the Forever Learning Center and assisted at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. In 2010, Charles became the director of five brothers who form the Maple Lane Community on the west side of South Bend. He generously continued his service to the Holy Cross Village community as the assistant superior of the Village for 6 years. He was the busy sacristan for the popular Sunday Mass at St. Joseph s Chapel and often served as the master of ceremonies at community functions, particularly jubilees and funerals. Charles had many friends at Corpus Christi parish and elementary school, where he frequently attended daily mass. His cheerfulness, beaming smile, and stimulating conversation were treasured by all who knew him. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 23rd, at St. Joseph s Chapel of Holy Cross College at Notre Dame from 9:30 to 11:0am on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will then follow with interment afterward in St. Joseph s Cemetery of the Village. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions, in honor of Brother Charles Gregg, C.S.C., to support the mission and ministries of the Brothers may be sent to: Brothers of Holy Cross, Office of Development, P.O. Box 460, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Br. Lawrence Stewart - 4 -
