For more than 150 years, the Catholic health ministry in California has provided compassionate care to our patients, families and communities. We are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of every person and community we serve. Together, our Catholic and Catholic-affiliated systems operate 54 acute care hospitals, which represent over 16% of all hospitals and nearly 20% of the hospital beds in California. California Catholic Hospitals Provide Distinctive High Quality Services Catholic hospitals are committed to serving our communities by providing valuable health services not always available in other hospitals. Services that are more often found in Catholic hospitals include neonatal intensive care units (NICU), pediatric care beds, maternity care and coronary care. Catholic hospitals are leaders in the provision of palliative care and pain management, helping improve the quality of life for our seriously ill patients, and their families. Over 95 percent of our Catholic and affiliated community hospitals operate palliative care programs, compared to a little more than 50 percent of California hospitals as a whole. Hospice is also a major part of our commitment to quality care, providing comfort and support to patients and their families coping with end-of-life issues, extending from supportive nursing and medical care to grief counseling and bereavement services to family and friends. All of our hospitals also offer a Spiritual Care Program to provide prayerful support to all patients, respecting the sacredness of life and the dignity of each and every person during their hospital stay. Faith Community Nursing Obesity. Heart disease. Diabetes. What do they have in common? They re all chronic health conditions where the best and most effective treatment is to aid and encourage awareness of and access to resources to improve health status. Providing that kind of health education on these chronic conditions and identifying other unmet health care needs, along with other concrete steps to promote community health, is the work of Faith Community Nurses (also known as parish nurses). This health care ministry is directly supported by Catholic health care in parishes throughout California to identify, address and help eliminate health disparities in their place of worship. Alliance of Catholic Health Care Mission The Alliance of Catholic Health Care strengthens the Catholic health care ministry in California by providing a statewide forum in which ministry leaders collaborate on advocacy, ministry leadership formation, Church relationships and other issues that enhance the common good.
