A 1st and was held prisoner for 9 days and was ordered my Gen. Fremont to be mustered out. He reenlisted in July 1862 and served until August 1865 in Co I Volunteers. 4th Iowa Calvary - John A. Kirkpatrick was just 21, and living in Warren Co. Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. K of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Feb 3, 1862. He was mustered into federal service on March 7, 1862. He was captured during the battle at Bear Creek, MS, on June 22, 1863, and ended up in the POW camp at Richmond, VA. He was later Kirkpatrick John A exchanged on Oct 14, 1863. Union K Corporal Lot 649 1840-6/30/1929 Kirkpatrick was captured a second time on June 6, 1864, at Brice's Crossroads, MS, but managed to escape his captors, and returned to his unit. While a member of the 4th Iowa Cavalry, Kirkpatrick was promoted to 7th Corporal on Jan 1, 1865; to 6th Corporal on May 1, 1865; and to 4th Corporal on July 1, 1865. On July 15, Page 5
