Penick-Allison Tennis Center When the $3 million Penick-Allison Tennis Center opened in the spring of 1986, it was the beginning of a new era for Longhorn tennis. Penick-Allison reflects the modern era of college tennis; one of exciting and grueling competition. The facility s name honors the rich heritage that is Texas tennis. The complex is named after Dr. D.A. Penick and Wilmer Allison, a duo that combined to contribute more than six decades to the sport at the University of Texas. d.a. penick and wilmer allison Dr. D. A. Penick was a graduate of the University of Texas, earning both a bachelor of arts and a master s degree from Texas. He returned to his alma mater in 1899 as an instructor of Latin and Greek. From 1920 to 1955, he was a professor of Classical Languages at UT and served as assistant dean of the College of Arts & Sciences from 1928 to 1940. Penick began his coaching career as a volunteer coach for the Texas tennis program in 1908. His Longhorns teams won every Southwest Conference title before 1957 and claimed 31 of 41 doubles titles, five NCAA doubles crowns and two NCAA singles championships. Penick took over as president of the Southwest Conference in 1923 and helped establish the league as one of the most prestigious in the nation during his 13-year tenure. He was president of the Texas Tennis Association for more than 50 years and was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the Longhorn Hall of Honor in recognition of his honorable achievements and contributions to the sport. Also a former Longhorn player, Wilmer Allison was Dr. Penick s leading prodigy. He claimed the 1927 NCAA and SWC individual titles but left the University before graduation to launch a career as an amateur player. Allison flourished, becoming one of the top players in the game. He claimed the national singles (1935), doubles (1931 and 1935) and mixeddoubles (1930) titles at Forest Hills. Allison was the Wimbledon doubles champion in 1929 and 1930. He represented the United States in Davis Cup play from 1928-37 and captained the 1933-36 U.S. teams. In 1938 Allison returned to Texas as an assistant tennis coach. He was named head coach of the Longhorns in 1957 and led his teams to four SWC team titles, along with three league individual singles and one doubles titles in 15 seasons. Allison now stands immortalized in the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association Hall of Fame, the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the Longhorn Hall of Honor. about the center Considered one of the finest collegiate tennis facilities in the nation, the Penick-Allison Tennis Center features 12 courts with lighting for night play and more than 1,800 stadium seats. The facility houses both the men s and women s varsity teams and includes four fully-equipped locker rooms, offices for the Longhorn coaching staff, a training room and a room used for video analysis of tennis players. Penick-Allison is located on the south end of campus on Trinity Street next to Waterloo Park. In 1988, the Penick-Allison Tennis Center was selected as the Outstanding Tennis Facility in the Nation by the United States Tennis Association and has been the site of several important championship tournaments. Texas hosted the 1986 NCAA Women s Tennis Championships and was the site of the inaugural Big 12 Women s Championships in 1997. Penick-Allison was also the site of the 1988 and 1992 Southwest Conference Men s and Women s Championships.
