ADVISOR AREA We are in need of several judges for Miscellaneous Project judging on July 16 th from 1-3pm at the School Building. If you are interested in serving as a judge for any of the following categories, please let the Extension Office know as soon as possible. Cooking Projects Art/Photography Lizard/Laundry/Family History/Tobacco & Alcohol Cake Decorating/Scrapbooking Skill-a-Thon/Project Judging July 16 th Volunteers are asked to confirm their assistance with the Extension Office or the species chair organizing the corresponding skillathon set up. Some species may elect to have a meeting prior to skill-a-thon to review the set-up, score sheets, etc. Any updated score sheets must be submitted to the Extension Office by June 1 st for approval. Many volunteers are needed for Project Judging to run smoothly and to provide the 4-H members with a positive experience. All clubs must be represented. This counts towards the required trainings. For smaller clubs, parents may serve as a volunteer for the club. Ohio 4-H Specialty Logo Plate Sales - Available NOW! The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is once again offering a specialty license plate dedicated to Ohio 4-H Youth Development and the new logo plates are now available for purchase. Show your support for Ohio 4-H by purchasing an Ohio 4-H Specialty License Plate. A portion of the annual plate fees collected from sold and renewed plates is given directly to Ohio 4-H and is earmarked for 4-H programming. License plates are more than just an accessory they are an investment in your 4-H members. Ohio 4-H provides over 250,000 youth members in local clubs and county based special interest programs with experiential learning that enhances their ability to use critical thinking, leadership, communication and social skills. You can purchase or renew your Ohio 4-H Specialty plate at your local Ohio BMV Deputy Registrar s Office or online at https://www.oplates.com/. CLUB NEWS Malley s Candy Sale Incentive: The winning club is Breeders & Feeders. They will receive 4 tickets to Pioneer Waterland courtesy of the 4-H Advisory Committee. Thank you the ALL clubs who participated in the 2016 Malley s candy sale fundraising event. Welch s Fruit Snack Fundraiser Sponsored by the Advisory Committee Fruit Snacks are $1 per bag and come in a case containing two totes of 54 bags of assorted flavors. Each tote of 54 bags sold will earn $13.50 for your club. Club orders are due July 29 th by emailing Jevnikar.1@osu.edu or ward.714@osu.edu. Pick up is at the Extension Office August 15 th from 4:30-6pm and August 16 th during normal business hours. Club payment is due by September 26 th. For more information see attached flyer or contact the office. Family-A-Fair Family-A-Fair is a community service opportunity for clubs to participate in. When a club provides a sponsorship award, the funds are used to provide a Geauga County family the opportunity to experience the Great Geauga County Fair. Club sponsorships will provide selected families with admission tickets, ride tickets, concession vouchers, and milkshake tokens. See flyer for more information.
Milkshake Booth Sign Ups If your club is interested in working in the milkshake booth this year please sign up by sending your top 3 preferred shifts, a contact name, and phone number to Leah Fellenstein via e-mail at leahfellenstein@yahoo.com. Leah will send back a confirmation e-mail with your club's assigned shift. Leah will process requests in the order they are received, please only send in shift requests via e-mail. Clubs need to have 10-12 members and at least 2 adults for the entire three hour shift. If your club has a lot of younger members (majority under 12) please have 3 adults available to assist. Clubs are required to come 15 minutes prior to the start of their shift and should allot about 10 minutes at the end of their shift to be replaced by the next club. Shifts available are Thursday-Monday at the following times. 10am-1pm, 1pm-4pm, 4pm-7pm, and 7pm-10pm. Commodity Carnival 4-H Fair Booth Geauga County 4-H has been selected to participate in the 2016 Commodity Carnival, brought to us by a partnership with National 4-H Council and the CME Group. The Commodity Carnival increases public understanding of the enormous value of agricultural commodities, highlights what it takes to manage business ricks when taking commodities to market, and improves agricultural literacy. Commodity Carnival is an interactive, hands on series of games where participants grow a commodity (a pig) and sell it at market. After playing Commodity Carnival, participants will recognize an agricultural commodity and associate commodities with produces used in daily life, understand the investments required to raise a hog, and discover how commodity risks factor into market sale prices. After completion of the games, participants are eligible to win a prize based on how their hog did at market. Clubs are encouraged to participate in the Commodity Carnival activities by signing up to assist with facilitating the games. Older teens and volunteers from clubs will work two hour shifts at the booth. Participating clubs can use this opportunity to meet Honor Club requirements. Additional information about Commodity Carnival is available at http://www.cmegroup.com/education/4-h.html Fighting Hunger in Geauga County Community Service Opportunity Greener Fields 4-H club is working with the Geauga Hunger Task Force to help increase donations to the 7 local food pantries throughout the county. Dan Takacs, president of Greener Fields 4-H club is working with Dr. Augustine Kellis of Kellis Eye Center on a joint fundraiser. From July 15 th through August 15 th, all donations and money raised by 4-H clubs throughout the county will be matched by Dr. Kellis. See attached flyer for additional information. 4-H MEMBERS Miscellaneous Project Judging Saturday, July 16 th 1:00pm 3:00pm School Building Members who have signed up for judging will need to bring their completed project book, pen or pencil, and their presentation materials. County completion requirements are the same as the State Fair requirements. Cloverbud Day Camp August 20 th Calling all Cloverbuds, join us for a mini science camp on Saturday, August 20 th from 10am-1pm at the Extension Office. No cost. More information to follow. Safety Poster Contest This year s Safety Poster Contest theme is: Online Safety. All Safety Posters are due at the Extension Office by August 1 st at 4:30pm. Please see attached flyer for complete details and poster requirements. Posters that do not meet the requirements will not be judged or displayed.
4-H Photography Contest Here s a chance to show off your photography skills. All pictures must be taken between Fair 2015 and August 1, 2016. Members are not required to take a 4-H Photography Project to enter contest. Entry deadline is August 1 st. All eligible entries and winners will be displayed in the Jr. Fair Building during fair. #AgIsCool Photo Contest ODA is launching an Agriculture is Cool Photo Contest on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Anyone who posts a photo sharing why they think Agriculture is Cool on either of those social media platforms using #AgIsCool is entered into our weekly drawing for prizes. It begins on June 20th and run through August 7th. LIVESTOCK/HORSE NEWS Attention PAS Participants If you attended an out-of-county PAS show (excluding Ashtabula s June 18 th show), your PAS Qualifying Form must be submitted to the Extension Office by Monday, July 11 th at 8am. Please use the drop box in the foyer for after hour s submission. Original paperwork is required. Failure to submit forms by 8am, will result in ineligibility for State Fair participation. Project Judging/Skill-a-thon July 16 th Project judging will be held Saturday July 16 th for all livestock and horse projects. Species stations will open at 9:00am and last until 11:00am. Members need to bring their completed project book(s) to judging. Members must complete project judging to be eligible for Jr. Fair and to fulfill their 4-H project requirements. If an individual does not complete project judging, that individual s 4-H year will not count despite attending club meetings and other. All project judging must be completed by July 16 th. Same as 2015 In an effort to save on printing costs, 2016 score sheets will not be carbon copied. Therefore, all score sheets must be collected at skill-a-thon. Members please don t forget to turn in your score sheets upon completion of project judging. Ribbons will still be awarded. Score sheets will be given back to the clubs in their fair packets. Swine Showmanship Clinic July 24 th 5:30pm Auburn Swine 4-H club is inviting all other 4-H clubs to a Swine Showmanship Clinic on July 24. Showmanship demonstrates that 4-H members are capable of working with their animal. Each individual will learn when the proper time is to start training with their animal and the Clinic will help as a review or a useful tool for experienced and new members. This Clinic is helpful because it can help you prepare in advance for the fair. The Clinic will provide information that will boost confidence while working with your animal and answering important questions from the Judge. You will learn to train your animal so that it will respond to the touch of the cane as well as preparing and grooming before the fair. Good Showmanship includes healthy competition as well as critical thinking and decision making skills, which are skills that members will take with them for the rest of their lives. The Clinic will provide proper training to all members of 4-H clubs who wish to participate. The Clinic will take place at the Durkee s house, 12772 Butternut Rd., Burton on Sunday, July 24 th at 5:30 pm. Contact Michelle May at 440.823.1552 to RSVP and with any questions about the Clinic. Poultry Clinic August 16 th 6:00pm Feathers & Fleece 4-H Club is sponsoring a Poultry Clinic with Larry Lokai. The clinic is open to all 4-H members and will be held at the Geauga Extension Office. FAIR INFORMATION 2016 Gate Theme: Barnyard Beach Party Please contact Nat Loze for more information. 440-632-1949 Important information from Jr. Fair Coordinator Jan Jackam: Don't forget that the presale assessments and exhibitor list with their market projects for all animals going through the sale is due July 16th. This includes the cheese baskets from the dairy clubs. Your check and list can be dropped off at the Secretary's Office on the fairgrounds on Wednesdays between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. or any time through the drop slot on the door. Again this year we would like to invite members ages 12 to 14 to become auxiliary members for Junior Fair. This is an opportunity for younger members who may be interested in being on Junior Fair Board to get a taste of the duties and responsibilities of the Junior Fair Superintendents. If you have members who are interested, please have them complete the attached form and return it to either Makenzie Healy or Jan Jackam. Contact information is on the form There will be a marketing clinic open to all Junior Fair market animal exhibitors on Saturday, August 6, at 9:00 a.m. This class will help you compose letters and talk to potential buyers for your market project. The class is being conducted by Ed and Marybeth Rumburg and will include many tips and helpful ideas to help you get the best price for your animal. Please consider attending this informative and helpful meeting. Remember, marketing you and your animal can make a difference in the price you get. Following the marketing meeting (about 10:00 a.m.) will be a session on how to complete your Drug Use Notification forms and your Junior Fair registration for your animals. Both documents are critical that they be filled out completely, as one goes to the state and must be completely accurate, and the other, if filled out correctly, will get you placed in the correct class in your show. This meeting will be especially helpful to first time exhibitors and their parents. Please encourage your new members to attend. Finally, don't forget to turn in your list of club members with their shirt sizes.
