NEWSLETTER OF THE COL. STEPHEN TRIGG CHAPTER - SAR SEPTEMBER 2015 WELCOME OUR NEWEST MEMBER! Bob Roberts of Hopkinsville, Kentucky Ancestor: Capt. Stephen Ashby - Virginia Continental Line $ Bob is a tool setter / operator for a manufacturing company in Hopkinsville. He attended our Memorial Day event at the Cadiz Park in May and decided that he wanted to become a member of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter. Having done most of his own research, his application was a breeze to put together. Unfortunately, he currently working most Saturdays, but hopes to be able to participate in future events. $ He was officially approved for membership on Wednesday, August 26. $ Bob is descended from Capt. Stephen Ashby of the Virginia Continental Line. Born in 1710 in Prince William County, Virginia, the Captain served early in the war and retired on September 14, 1778, at the age of 68! His retirement made room for younger officers to serve after the Virginia regiments were consolidated. $ Capt. Stephen Ashby received a land grant of 1,000 acres in 1784 for his service in the 8th and 12th Virginia Regiments. He settled in the frontier of Christian County, Kentucky and claimed his land. $ The Patriot died in 1797 and was laid to rest in the Old Ashby Farm Cemetery near Hanson in modern-day Hopkins County. Many of his descendants still reside in the area today. $ The DAR chapter in Madisonville, Hopkins County, is named in his honor. His grave was marked by the SAR in 2010. 7

The groups also provide small gifts for the staff people seated at random at their tables. $ For the second year, the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter hosted a table, beautifully designed and decorated by Debbie Mallory, wife of chapter Vice-President Steve Mallory. Compatriots Geoff Baggett and Dr. Dennis Adams hosted, in uniform, and presented their guests with minihaversacks full of snacks and goodies, along with a Sonic gift card. The SAR table included a copy of the Declaration of Independence, beeswax candles and brass holders, real wood utensils, and an edible apple tree centerpiece. Stephen Trigg Chapter took part in the annual Central District commemoration of the Battle of Blue Licks in Eastern Kentucky. The event honors the seventy-seven Kentuckians who died at the hands of over 300 Shawnee warriors under the command of the British on August 19, 1782. The commemoration ceremony is held each year at the granite monument honoring the men of Blue Licks near the site of their mass grave. In addition to receiving credit toward the SAR Silver Color Guard Medal for participation in a National Color Guard event, all four of these men also received credit for five marked graves (due to the site being a mass grave of Patriot soldiers) toward the Patriot Grave Marking Medal. 10
