Contact Information Main Office - 301-353-8080 Mary Holmes, Afterschool Activities Coordinator - Mary_D_Holmes@mcpsmd.org Joe Kennedy, Athletic Director - Joseph_A_Kennedy@mcpsmd.org The staff at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities. Afterschool activity hours are 2:45 pm to 4:00 pm, Tuesday through Thursday. A brief description of the activities, sponsors, special requirements, and fees (if necessary) for participates are listed on pages two to four. In many cases, students need to stay after school or sign up to stay after school for an activity when it is scheduled. However, in some cases, students must try out or receive a special invitation to join. Transportation is available for students. Eligibility for Intramural and Extracurricular Activities Participation in intramural or extracurricular activities requires the payment of an annual activity fee of $30.00. Students must meet the eligibility standard by earning a 2.0 grade point average from the previous marking period with not more than one failing grade (including a carry-over from the 4 th marking period to the fall). Students may petition the activity sponsor for reinstatement two weeks after the report card is received. The principal has the final decision on each petition. Tutoring and instructionally related activities are the only exceptions for reinstatement. Cancellations Cancellation of afterschool activities will be posted on the ML King MS web page or sent to subscribers on our list serv. To join the Panthers Bulletin e-list go to http://groups.yahoo/com/group/panthersbulletin. After School Rules and Regulations Students must be present all day to participate in activities. Students must report to the cafeteria at the end of the school day if staying for an afterschool activity, or the locker room if staying for athletics or intramurals. Students should not exit the building at the end of the day. All students who plan to take the activity bus home will receive a bus pass. Activity Bus Schedule The activity buses will run every day after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from September 11 th to June 6 th. Activities will begin Tuesday, September 11 th unless otherwise noted. All dates are subject to cancellation due to either weather or other unforeseen events. There will be no activities held on September 13 th due to Back to School Night. Auditions for the musical will take place the last week in September and auditions for the talent show will take place in March Students will learn the basics of robotics and programming through the use of the Lego Mindstorm Robots. Students will incorporate math, science, and problem solving skills as well as developing teamwork and collaboration skills Yearbook Club Ms. Tarzy Tuesday Starts 9/11/12 A208 Yearbook is a group of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who volunteer to help create the annual King MS Yearbook. Students help to take pictures at school and community events, and then organize them into yearbook pages. They help to create the

layout of the yearbook, create collages, and develop the overall theme. It is their time to shine and help make memories of King MS last a lifetime. SGA will give students opportunities to be involved in our local community, charities, and school environment. Students have the option to be involved in activities that will also give them SSL hours. The National Junior Honor Society is a National organization of students who demonstrate academic achievement and the qualities of leadership, scholarship, character, citizenship and service. These elected members have an opportunity through various activities to demonstrate and share their experiences and talents and through service projects support the school, organizations and the community. Assist students with class work and homework assignments. This club will help our young males become future leaders. The group will focus on academics and strategies to better themselves as young men. Included in the activities are completing homework assignments, Edline check, how to achieve better grades in class, how to be leaders in and out of the classroom, future goals/careers,
