Dr. John Felix Raj, Vice Principals, Member Secretary, Academic Council, members of the staff, teaching and support, alumni/ae, benefactors, parents, wellwishers, friends, and my dear students, I wish you all a happy and joyous New Year 2018 and extend a warm welcome to all to this 11th Convocation & Valedictory Function of the College. May the Almighty bless us abundantly! On behalf of the Governing Body of St. Xavier's College and all of you, I place on record the long and dedicated services of Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj S.J. as the Principal of the College and thank him for being a constant mentor and guide to each one of us at St. Xavier's. It is under his outstanding leadership that the College has reached such great heights. I also take this opportunity to congratulate him for being appointed the 1st Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of St. Xavier' University and we are sure the University with reach the greatest height under his leadership and care. We assure him of our prayers and good wishes. St. Xavier's is very happy today to honour him as the 'Nihil Ultra Awardee for 2018' for his outstanding achievement in the field of education not only in St. Xavier's College but in the state of West Bengal. Thank you Father, for accepting this humble expression of appreciation from all of us at St. Xavier's! The 10th Convocation and Valedictory Function of St. Xavier's College (Autonomous) was held on 17th January, 2017 at 12:30 p.m. on the College Grounds. Shri Partha Chatterjee, Hon'ble Minister in Charge, Department of Higher Education was the Chief Guest for the occasion and delivered the Valedictory Address. The NAAC Peer Team consisting of four members visited the College on the 9th and 10th of January, 2017. The result of the NAAC was published on the NAAC website on 23rd January, 2017 and St. Xavier's College (Autonomous) was granted A++ with a CGPA of 3.77 on a four point scale which is the highest score of a College in the country. St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, secured the 6th rank in India Ranking 2017 for Colleges, conducted by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. I congratulate all the 2168 under-graduates, post-graduates and B.Ed. students who receive their degrees today. May you be men and women for others! My congratulations to all the students who have performed well academically and have acquired ranks. Let me conclude with my sincere gratitude to all the GB Members, Vice Principals, Member Secretary, IQAC Co-ordinator, Deans, teaching faculty, support staff, alumni/ae, parents, wellwishers, friends and benefactors for their whole-hearted co-operation and support. 2 Let our service continue to bring joy to many more people in the spirit of the Jesuit Magis. Nihil Ultra Award of Excellence Awarded to Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj,S.J. CITATION Words can in no way acknowledge or appreciate Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj's dedicated contribution in making St. Xavier's College, what it is today. Born in Poolangudi, in Ramnad District in Tamil Nadu in 1956, Father Felix Raj joined the Society of Jesus in 1973. He graduated with Economics from Loyola College, Chennai in 1980. During his studies at Chennai, he involved himself in the activities of All India Catholic University Federation, a University Student Movement. He represented the AICUF in the Conference of Asian Catholic Students Federation held in Penang in 1979. He has been in this University Student Movement for more than 35 years. In 1989 he took over as the West Bengal State Adviser to the AICUF. Father completed his Masters in Economics at St. Joseph's College, Trichy in 1982. He secured the first rank and was awarded a gold medal. He completed his Philosophy studies from Jnana-Deepa Vidyapeeth (JDV), Pune in 1984. He then studied a three-year Theology course from Vidya Jothi College, Delhi in 1989 and was ordained as a priest in Trichy on 23 April 1989. He joined the Economics department of St. Xavier's College, Kolkata as faculty in 1989. An administrator par excellence, Fr. Felix Raj brought discipline and commitment, fairness and tolerance to the daily running of the College. He was appointed Rector of St. Xavier's in 1996. He then took over as Vice-Principal of the Commerce Department of the College in 1997. In 2009, he was appointed Principal of the College. His education initiatives include setting up St. Xavier's College, Asansol in 2015 and St. Xavier's University, Kolkata 2017. In February 16, 2017 He is the first Vice-Chancellor of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata. Father Felix Raj initiated the expansion of the College academically and infrastructurally which includes the Raghabpur Campus, the rural face of St. Xaviers and also the St. Lawrence Campus. Under his committed leadership and democratic governance, St. Xavier's College, Kolkata has secured a score of 3.53 out of 4 (A+) in the NAAC accreditation 2011, College of Excellence" by UGC in 2014, the status of Heritage College by UGC in 2015 and the highest score of 3.77 CGPA out of 4 (A++) in the NAAC accreditation 2017. He is the recipient of prestigious awards like Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad Memorial Award, Banga Bibhushan Award in 2014 and Siksha Ratna Award in 2016. 16 Father, you truly shine as an exemplary model of abiding inspiration.
