During the AFoPS-13, it was decided to publish the AFoPS proceedings annually by each member countries in turn to demonstrate progresses in Polar Science of Asian countries. On the meeting, China was given the great honor to publish the first AFoPS proceedings as a thematic issue of the Advances in Polar Science (APS), which is a peer-reviewed journal, published in English. The AFoPS-13 proceedings contain 16 original scientific papers from authors of all AFoPS countries, namely: China, India, Japan, Korea and Malaysia. It covers disciplines of oceanography, atmospheric science, geology, biology and ecology. Many new findings and interesting results in these fields are presented and discussed. You can download the articles published in this special issue on the website: http://www.aps-polar.org/paper/2013/24/04/. Successful completion of 10 th Southern Ocean Expedition Indian Expedition to Southern Ocean (SOE) is multidisciplinary and multinational scientific research program under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. Scientists from the nodal agency, National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR), Goa and from other institutes of national and international repute participated in the expedition to understand the role and response of Sothern Ocean to the climatic variability. The tenth expedition was launched from Port Louis, Mauritius on 9 th December, 2017. A team of scientists from about 11 organizations and Universities including Scripps Institute of Oceanography, California departed onboard the chartered Ice Class Research Vessel SA Agulhas [owned by South African Maritime Safety Authority, a South African Government Institute]. The duration of the expedition was 60 days. During expedition, continuous observations for various atmospheric and oceanic parameters were carried out along the entire cruise. After completion of the entire scientific operations upto Prydz Bay region [69 S 76 E] the vessel arrived at Mauritius on 4 th Team of 10 th Indian Southern Ocean Expedition February, 2018. The studies carried out during 10 th SOE, ranging from the better understanding of present physical, chemical and biological processes to paleoclimatic studies to the recently observed problem of microplastics. All these studies together will form a bigger picture of Indian Sector of Southern Ocean that is hoping to reveal mysteries as well as enhance the understanding of SO processes and its role in Climate variability. Visit of SCAR Professor, Dr. Xavier Crosta at NCAOR Dr. Xavier Crosta, senior scientist in paleooceanography at the University of Bordeaux, France visited NCAOR from 5 th - 22 nd March 2018. As a part of SCAR Visiting Professorship, Dr Crosta undertook training to teach diatom taxonomy, statistical approaches to produce quantitative estimates of sea surface temperature and sea ice conditions and Southern Ocean paleoceanography to the young researcher at NCAOR. Dr Crosta was awarded the visit to India Lecture by Dr. Crosta at NCAOR to train five PhD students and post-doctoral fellows on diatom taxonomy, diatom slide preparation and diatom-based transfer function. The group identified the species specific characteristics on the microscope, and worked on modern and fossil samples covering different time slices and different regions of the Southern Ocean. Dr Crosta also shared his experience of science with the trainees on aspects such as delivering an effective oral presentation and crafting scientific papers (https://www.scar.org/ Train course with Dr. Crosta general-scar-news/xavier-crosta-report/). Dr. Xavier Crosta also delivered 03 public lectures at NCAOR, Goa titled: a. Antarctic Sea Ice in the changing world: Insight from paleostudies on 14.03.2018. b. Late Holocene Sea ice dynamics in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean and potential forcing mechanisms on 16 th March, 2018. c. Environmental conditions of Kerguelen Islands during the last 40k years on 19 th March, 2018. Xavier s lectures on paleo-oceanography have enlightened the audience from scientific as well as nonscientific background. Resource: NCAOR 4

AFoPS Special Meeting in Davos The Asian Forum for Polar Sciences (AFoPS) special meeting in 2018 was held in Davos, Switzerland in June. As the chairman of the AFoPS rotation for year 2017-2018, the conference was hosted by the Polar Research Institute of China. Representatives and coordinators from AFoPS member countries attended this meeting. The revised version of meeting minutes of 2017 Annual General Meeting (AGM) were agreed by all participants. Meanwhile, all participants agreed the AGM 2018 to be held in Xiamen, P.R.China with China Symposium on Polar Science (CSPS) together on 10 th -12 th October 2018. The science forum of AGM was deeply discussed in the meeting, encouraged Asian member countries to develop international cooperation step by step in different regions such as logistics and Antarctic inland traversing in future.
