Kobe Cluster in brief The biomedical cluster of Kobe Our Mission: We, city of Kobe and the Foundation for Biomedical Research and Innovation, are currently working on the Kobe Medical Industry Development Project (MID) with the aims of establishing a research and development center for leading-edge medical technology and for a world wide life science cluster. The MIDs core facility is the Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation (IBRI), where translational research bridges the gap between basic research and clinical applications. Other key facilities include the Translational Research and Informatics Center (TRI), an information center for clinical research, and the Business Support Center for Biomedical Research Activities (BMA), which offers support services for bio-venture businesses. In addition to these facilities, we have completed the Kobe Medical Device Development Center (MEDDEC), which is a public rental facility and primarily focuses on facilitating the evaluation and improvement of cutting-edge medical devices and technologies. With these core facilities, we are working in close cooperation with the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology (CDB) on the practical application of regenerative medicine. And we are also working on providing business support services through establishing venture business funds and supporting foreign affiliated companies as well as Japanese medical-related companies. Our supports are: Various kinds of support to promote the creation of new businesses, and support clinical research for pharmaceutical and medical products (Clinical Research Coordination Center), and others. We have been organizing the Pro-cluster Kobe, where mentors advise private companies on Japanese FDG, about the Japanese market and also about other crucial topics related to the Life Science situation in Japan. Technology: Gene/Cell Therapy, Imaging, Developmental Biology, Molecular Imaging & Development of Medical Devices Highlights: We can provide a lot of facilities, such as dry labs, wet labs, animal laboratories, CPC, Radio isotope laboratory. And we arrange as well business partnering between researchers and medical related companies in and outside Kobe. Establishment of 105 biomedical companies: We have already clustered many biomedical companies and arrange as well business meetings among them. In
addition to that have Kobe companies organized a corporate sector with the name MedCollab KOBE, which supports the network of the companies inside the cluster. Kobe Medical Device Development Center (MEDDEC). MEDDEC is a rental facility, which is established with the focal point on R&D functions for advanced medical technologies and cutting-edge medical devices. Anticipated Highlights: The Molecular Imaging Project: Kobe is ready and aiming to provide the Pharmaceutical Industry with a promising Platform of the Molecular Imaging Research, with this the RIKEN Molecular Imaging R&D Center was established October 2006. Further the Kobe Healthcare Industry Development Center (HI-DEC) was established November 2006. Both centers are placed very near our core institute IBRI. It is to mention that HI-DEC is a rental facility for R&D and business incubation for healthcare technologies and this will additionally supplement our activities on Medical Devices inclusive the center MEDDEC.
