IEEE Kansai Section Section Report Yukihiro Nakamura Chair of the IEEE Kansai Section Ritsumeikan University PART A - SECTION SUMMARY A.1 Executive Summary The IEEE Kansai Section was established in November 1998. The number of members of the Kansai Section as of ember 31 was 2108 (See Item B-1). This number increased by 23 compared to ember 31, 2007. In 2008 the Section had six executive meetings, one annual section meeting and six technical lectures. In 2009 the Section has already had one annual section meeting and two executive meetings. A.2 Financial Report The Section s Finance is in good condition. See the attached Table 1 in the ANNEX I. Announcement of merit of IEEE membership. 2. Increase of Senior member in Kansai Section. (Statistics indicatey that Senior members have higher probability of maintaining their membership.) For that purpose, Kansai Section gives the IEEE Kansai Section Medal" to new Senior Member nd support an application for Senior Member grade on our web site. Photo 1 IEEE Kansai Section Medal The IEEE Kansai Section Medal is presented to new Senior Member. The medal is designed with the portrait of Gennai Hiraga who had constructed the first friction generator, Elekiter, in Japan. We have given the Medals to 4 New Senior Members in annual section meeting on February 24, 2009. B-2 Student Activities Committee The Student Activities Committee planned the Kansai Section Student Paper Award to encourage student members of Kansai Section in their research activities of presenting excellent papers in IEEE international conferences and IEEE Transactions. In cooperation with the Award Committee, we selected 12 winners of this award in 2008. We have five student branches; Osaka University, Kyoto University, Ritsumeikan University, NAIST (Nara Institute of Science and Technology) and University of Hyogo. We are acting to establish a new Student Branch in Kansai Section in cooperation with Kobe University, Kansai University and Osaka Prefecture University. We had also several other technical and social events for students in Kansai Section. 4

B-3 Nominations Committee Nominations Committee asked Fellow members in Kansai Section to recommend fellow up-grade candidates. 5 members have been endorsed from Kansai Section. We ended up with 2 new Fellow members in Kansai Section. B-4 Awards Committee Awards Committee established the IEEE Kansai Section GOLD Award in 2001. This award is for students or younger members who have contributed to IEEE Kansai Section's activities. The 2008 Kansai Section GOLD Award was awarded to Mr. Yuichiro Ikeda (University of Hyogo) and Mr. Yoshihisa Fujimoto (SHARP Cooperation) in annual section meeting on February 24 2009. Photo 2 IEEE Kansai Section GOLD Award In 2004, we also established a new award for students, the Kansai Section Student Paper Award. This Award is for student members who have presented their excellent research results in IEEE international conference or IEEE Transactions. We selected 12 winners of this award in 2008. Photo 3 IEEE Kansai Section Student Paper Award The IEEE Kansai Section Student Paper Award was presented to 12 winners at commendation ceremony in annual section meeting on February 24, 2009. B-5 Chapter Operations Committee Chapter Promotion Committee was reorganized into Chapter Operations Committee in 2008 with the aim of organizing new chapters and supporting chapters in Kansai Section. Most of the chapters were very active. EDS Kansai Chapter had three technical meetings and one educational meeting. SSCS Kansai Chapter had three technical meetings and eight educational meetings. CAS Kansai Chapter had three technical meetings. APS Kansai Chapter had two technical meetings. COMS Kansai Chapter had two technical meetings. CS Kansai Chapter had two technical meetings. MTTS Kansai Chapter had five technical meetings and seven educational meetings. LEOS Kansai Chapter had fourteen technical meetings. SPS Kansai Chapter had two technical meetings. Part C. Goals and Action Plans in 2009 C-1 Executive Meeting We will have 5 executive meetings this year. C-2 Nominations Committee NC will also nominate fellow up-grade candidates. C-3 Membership Development Committee MDC members will try to increase membership in their organizations. 6

C-4 Student Activities Committee SAC will try to open new student branch in Kansai Section. SAC is also planning some technical and social events for students in Kansai Section. C-5 Technical Program Committee TPC will have several Technical Lectures. C-6 Awards Committee AC undertakes the selection process for the IEEE Kansai Section GOLD Award and the IEEE Kansai Section Student Paper Award. C-7 Chapter Operations Committee COC will promote cooperation between chapters and will try to establish new Chapters in Kansai Section. C-8 Chapter Each Chapter will have some events including some technical lectures and workshops.
