Job Description Senior Nursery Nurse Department Babraham Nursery Grade BI 8 Salary range 26,367 to 29,210 per annum Length of appointment Permanent Location Babraham Institute Working Hours 42 hours Job Profile Summary A full-time Senior Nursery Nurse post has arisen within our Nursery. Ideally, this post will be in one of our under twos rooms, but could potentially be with our two-year olds, dependent upon the successful applicants experience. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the room and be part of the Nursery management team, supporting the Manager and Deputies. The working hours are from Mondays to Thursdays from 8.30am to 6.00pm and on Fridays from 8.30am to 5.30pm, totalling 42 hours per week. Babraham Nursery is a workplace Nursery primarily for the use of staff at the Babraham Institute. The Babraham Institute is a charity, which is world-renowned for its research in life sciences that leads to new medicines and treatments for human diseases. Babraham Nursery was opened in September 1990 and operates from a large house situated in a quiet corner of a residential area in the grounds of the Institute. It has a homely atmosphere and is surrounded by green fields and woods. It has a large enclosed garden with climbing frame, pathways and grassed areas. Nursery accommodates up to ninety children on the Early Years register aged from 6 weeks to 5 years throughout the year and operates a separate holiday club for school-aged children during the holidays at the local school. There is a large team of Nursery Nurses and Nursery Assistants who care for the children as well as staff who provide the meals and administrative support. A Senior Nursery Nurse leads each of the four base rooms supported by the Deputy Managers and Head of Nursery. We also have two cleaners who carry out regular daily cleaning. The Nursery is open all year round except for Bank Holidays and a one-week closure during the Christmas period.
Key Tasks To be the line manager for staff who work with the Base Room and to oversee their activities on a day-to-day basis. To support, mentor and coach the other staff within the room and lead the. To promote the development of sound practices designed to achieve a well-motivated staff team. To encourage the staff member s individual performances and their own personal development. To be the Reporting Officer in the Probationary and Annual review processes for these staff members. To carry out individual 6 weekly Supervisory meetings with the staff for whom the post holder acts as line manager for, reporting back to management any issues raised. To ensure good liaison, communication lines and collaboration. To ensure every child is treated as an individual at all times, and to ensure other staff uphold this core belief of nursery, ensuring every child has the best possible and most positive start in their own lives. To plan, develop and supervise, with the room staff, programmes of activity to ensure that each child s full potential is developed in the social, physical, psychological and cultural sense to ensure that the child s welfare as an individual and as a member of a group is paramount at all times. To organise and oversee key person responsibilities for all staff within the room. To act as key person for a group of children, building relationships with the child and their family, carrying out observations, assessing their development, supporting their individual next steps and maintaining appropriate records. To compile accurate and detailed termly reports on these children. To monitor individual children s well-being and respond appropriately to any illness or accident. To be directly responsible for maintaining consistency within the room; with regards to daily activities, room management and paperwork, including each child s learning journey, report writing and individual cycles of learning. To support and act in conjunction with the Nursery Manager and Deputy Managers in matters of management, administration and development, supporting and developing new initiatives and developments; maximising The Nursery s ability to continue to improve. To have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Childcare Act 2006, the Children Act 1989 and 2004, the Revised Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, the Early Years Foundation Stage guidance, equal opportunity and anti-discriminatory practices and procedures. To have knowledge and understanding of new governmental reports and reviews; including the Childcare Act 2016, Tickell review, the Nutbrown report and the More Great Childcare report (DfE 2013) To be articulate and effective in oral communication with parents, staff and outside agencies. To have sound written communication skills and be able to produce accurate reports and letters. To oversee any students that attend the Nursery for work experience in the room and to monitor their all-round performance. To promote excellent proactive parent/carer/staff relationships within the Nursery. To provide reassurance, empathy and support to new parents. To carry out parent consultations and help plan, organise & attend open evenings.
To ensure that the room toys and equipment are clean, safe and well maintained. To ensure good liaison, communication lines and collaboration with the other Senior Nursery Nurses in nursery. In addition to two weekly staff meetings, attend monthly Senior meetings. To undertake any other duties of a similar level and responsibility as may be required from time to time.
