THE NAUGHTON SCHOLARSHIPS TERMS AND CONDITIONS 2018 What are the Naughton Scholarships? The Naughton Scholarships are a scheme of scholarships to promote the study of engineering, science and technology at third level by students in Ireland. For 2018, the scheme applies to all counties in the Republic of Ireland (the Applicable Counties ). Thirty Six Scholarships will be awarded in 2018 one to a student from each of the Applicable Counties with the exception of Cork where there will be two scholarships and Dublin where there will be four. There will also be five additional scholarships awarded by choice of the Trustees. Each Scholarship award will be 5,000 for each year of that student s third-level course (up to a maximum of four years). Who is eligible to apply? All second level students: (a) who have been attending a recognised school in one of the Applicable Counties for at least two years immediately preceding the sitting of the Leaving Certificate examination in 2018; and (b) who are sitting examinations in at least two of the following Leaving Certificate science and maths subjects - Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Physics and Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Agricultural Science, Technology and Design and Communication Graphics (the Applicable Subjects ); and (c) who intend in the year immediately following their Leaving Certificate to pursue a full-time undergraduate programme of three or more years duration in engineering, science or technology related courses, in any publicly funded university or third level institution in Ireland, including Northern Ireland. (d) N.B. Please note that we do not have a definitive list of acceptable courses as there are so many courses on offer through all the universities and colleges that it would be impossible to have an exact list. However in general scholarships are only 1

awarded for courses that are general science, technology, maths and engineering degrees rather than more focused practitioner courses in dentistry, medicine, nursing, veterinary or architecture or actuarial ones. If in doubt as to whether your chosen course is eligible, please email us on info@thenaughtonfoundation.ie. What kind of third level courses are eligible for scholarships? All third level courses of three or more year s duration in any publicly funded university or third level institution in Ireland, including Northern Ireland, related to the fields of engineering, science and technology will be eligible for scholarship. Any course must be recognised by and registered with either the CAO system or the UCAS system. Courses in England, Scotland and Wales are not eligible. How to apply for a scholarship? Applications are invited from all second-level students who meet the eligibility criteria. Each candidate must submit a completed application providing their personal details, his/her educational history, his/her preferred third level course choices and a personal statement. Application Forms can be viewed and completed online on the Foundation s website, www.thenaughtonfoundation.ie. Where and when to send completed Application Forms? Application Forms can be viewed and completed online on the Foundation s website, www.thenaughtonfoundation.ie. Postal applications are no longer accepted. Closing Date The closing date for receipt of applications by the Foundation is Midnight on Friday 18 th May 2018. Applications must be received by 5.30pm on the closing date. The Foundation will acknowledge all online applications immediately by email. All applicants will later be provided by email with a password with which to submit online (a) their Leaving Certificate results and (b) details of third level offers received, in August. N.B. Please ensure you give a correct email address as it is the only method by which we will communicate your password to you. It is your responsibility to upload your Leaving Certificate Results and College Offer to us by midnight on Thursday 23 rd August 2018. Please note that late applications cannot be accepted. Please print a copy of your Application Form before you submit it, as it will not be possible to provide a copy of same once submitted. Please email any queries on the Application Form to info@thenaughtonfoundation.ie. 2

What are the selection criteria? The Trustees of The Naughton Foundation have established a Selection Panel for assessing all applications. Significant importance and preference will be given to those candidates who achieve the highest combined results in the Leaving Certificate in the Applicable Subjects. However, the Selection Panel will also review and evaluate the merits and eligibility of candidates using several other criteria, including: (a) the interest, ability and potential of the candidate to study their chosen field; (b) the existence and severity of any disadvantages or barriers which may prevent or impede the candidate from their chosen field; (c) the candidate's motivation, commitment and disposition to benefit from third-level education and to complete the course of study successfully; and (d) the candidates personal statements will bear on their likelihood of success. The onus is on the candidate in completing the Application Form, particularly the personal statements, to demonstrate the degree to which he/she meets these criteria. Please note that in general scholarship recipients to date have received in excess of 475 CAO points in their Leaving Certificate examinations. The Selection Panel will prepare a shortlist of candidates and some candidates may be required to attend an interview with the Selection Panel. The interviews will principally focus on the candidate's application and the degree to which he/she meets the selection criteria. The interviews will be conducted after completion of the Leaving Certificate. Candidates to be called for interview will be given one week's notice of the date, time and location of the interview. There may also be phone interviews. Award of Scholarship Upon receipt of their Leaving Certificate results, all candidates must submit their results via the uplink on the Foundation s website, www.thenaughtonfoundation.ie. Scholarships will be awarded to successful candidates, subject to: (a) Verification of Leaving Certificate results; (b) Any necessary verification of information provided in the Application Form, including contact with any referees; (c) An offer of a place and confirmation of registration on the relevant third level course. The latter consideration may result in an offer of a scholarship being made on a conditional basis initially. Any scholarships awarded will continue, at the same amount as awarded for the first year, for each of the succeeding two or three years of attendance, as applicable, subject to certification by the relevant third level 3

institute of the candidate's satisfactory performance, including examinations, for each academic year. No scholarship amount will be paid for any academic year that is repeated. The exact conditions governing the scholarship will be outlined in detail to the successful candidates at the time the offer is made. The Foundation will host a special ceremony to publicly announce the winners of these scholarship awards in September. A special presentation will also be made to each scholarship award winner s school. Their parents and representatives of their respective schools as well as members of the media and others will be invited to attend this ceremony. Data Protection Please note that any information and personal data supplied in an application to us will be held and processed by The Naughton Foundation in accordance with the Data Protection Acts, 1988 and 2003. Personal data submitted in any application will be shared with the Selection Panel and the Trustees of The Naughton Foundation. All applicants must consent to the processing of their data for the purposes of assessing their suitability for a Scholarship by indicating their consent on the Application Form. General terms and conditions The Selection Panel may, at any stage, seek additional information from individual candidates or referees. A student who is eligible for or who is in receipt of another major scholarship or educational payment or training allowance may be deemed by the Selection Panel to be ineligible to receive the award of a scholarship. 4

The Trustees of the Naughton Foundation reserve all rights to modify at any time and/or to terminate this scholarship scheme and/or to make whatever decisions in regard to the operation of this scholarship scheme that may be required and their determination(s) on all these matters shall be final and there shall be no right of appeal. 5
