Research Activities at UCY Socioeconomic Effects Large part of the research contributes to what is called pure science Many of the studies contribute to applied research focusing on the understanding and solution of practical problems we face in Cyprus and the region Through these programs the University contributes directly to the improvement of the quality of life and to sustainable economic growth of Cyprus 06/09/2004 7

Wireless Access Portable PC for Every Student e-university Portal Systems UCY In the last 3 years UCY has taken the initiative of developing a technical framework for mobile wireless access within (and later on in the wider proximity of) the physical area of the university campus A pilot project has been implemented with the allocation of 30 wireless-access-capable portable computers to students of the Department of Computer Science The plan is to go full-scale within the next few years 06/09/2004 11

e-university Research Lab There are plans to create an e-university Research Lab The lab will serve as a platform/environment for contacting applied and theoretical research and other development activities research, develop and promote technologies and trends in the e-university area The resulting solutions and services will become available and be deployed not only to the UCY environment but also to other academic and educational organizations both locally and globally 06/09/2004 12

National Center of Technological Research and Development The Cyprus Government has decided to create a National Center of Technological Research and Development to contact/undertake pure and applied research and development in specific hi-tech-related areas in which Cyprus seems to have a competitive advantage The Center will promote the following: Applied research and development that will help the economy and society through collaborations and alliances with the local industry, social organizations, the local governance bodies and tourism organizations Pure research in cutting-edge areas that have an industrial perspective Training and career canceling and career rebuilding for the university graduates 06/09/2004 17

Diogenes Incubator Center Rationale The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism implemented New Industrial Policy Creation of modern economy, competitive with those of the Western and the new European world Approved the creation of High-Tech Incubator Centers in Cyprus UCY is one of the four organizations that have been approved to create a Hi-Tech Incubator Centre UCY s decision for the creation of a Hi-Tech Incubator Center comprises and arises from the following important goals the promotion of applied research the promotion of the academic and research interests of the members of the institution the active engagement in all the phases of technology life cycle, and the collaboration with the industry and the private and public sector 06/09/2004 18

National Research Park Diogenes Incubator Center NCTRD Pool of Graduates National Research Park + Industry Start Ups Low physical space needs and expected success and expandability High The Cyprus Government, with the participation of UCY, is planning the creation of a National Research Park will provide full support to the successful ideas that have proven their viability and sustainability (either by successfully exiting the NCTRD or by graduating from Incubator Centers) and they are ready to proceed to the deployment and commercialization stage 06/09/2004 19
