The induction ceremony will take place on January 19th in the Wilcox music room. Senior Parents: FAFSA Remind Senior parents please apply for Financial Aid as soon as possible. If you have questions on how to apply for Financial Aid, EducationQuest in Kearney is a free resource that can walk you through the steps. Set up an appointment today by calling 308-234- 6310. Scholarship Season It is officially scholarship season, and seniors are becoming busy with filling out applications. One of the major resources for scholarships is our school website, www.whfalcons.org. To access various local scholarship applications, students can click on Resources and select Counselor Resources. This is where I will continue to update the list of scholarships as they open up. Here are some important dates to keep in mind: April 1st: Local Area Scholarships Due High School Counselor Updates 5 1

Counselor Updates March 15, 2017 Jana s Campaign School Assembly February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention month. Jana s Campaign came for an assembly on Feb. 27th to talk to the 7th-8th graders and high school students about healthy and unhealthy relationships. This campaign focuses on teaching students what some of the red flags for unhealthy relationships look like. After the school assembly, the female and male students split up for sessions on gender stereotypes. Overall, the staff and student body felt that Jana s Campaign brought a powerful message about relationships. Senior Scholarship Work Night The Importance of Volunteering the sooner, the better One important aspect of scholarships is volunteer work. Scholarship providers want to know that students are not only involved in school but are taking the time to give back to their community, state, and country. With how busy students are with activities, volunteer work is often overlooked until students are seniors. As a counselor, I often notice that students have little to write about in this section on their scholarships. Even though many students volunteer in their community through various clubs and organizations, scholarship committees want to see what work students are doing on their own, without the school being involved. It is never too late to start volunteering. I encourage students to set some time aside each year, whether it be during a break or on the weekend, to give back to someone else. Students can start building their volunteer experiences their freshmen year Scholarships are not the only reason to get involved in volunteering. Volunteering helps students explore different interests, build relationships and network, and gain confidence in themselves. Students in the past have volunteered by visiting/playing games with residents at nursing homes, serving food at Cross Roads in Kearney, taking care of animals at the Humane Society, and ringing bells for the Salvation Army during the Christmas season. There are also several ways to volunteer at churches and camps in the summer. I would be happy to help your student come up with ways to give back and make volunteer work a part of their lives. It may be some of the most rewarding work they do With April s scholarship deadline quickly approaching, the seniors are welcome to come to the business room on Monday, March 20th to work on scholarships. The work night will be from 5:30 until 7:30. Pizza will be provided. All seniors are welcome to attend to work on scholarships since a lot of students will be gone the last week for the D.C. trip. 6 High School Counselor Updates 1

Scholarship Information Sheet Tips for finding scholarships n Organize scholarships in deadline order, and set aside time each week to work on scholarship essays and applications. n n n n n If requested on the application, list activities, awards, honors classes, and volunteer or paid jobs. Track them using the Activities Resume at EducationQuest.org. If an application requires a letter of recommendation, give the person writing the letter sufficient notice, a specific deadline, and a copy of your Activities Resume. After writing an essay, ask an adult (preferably an English teacher) to review the document for spelling, grammar, and sentence structure. Follow all directions, and make sure the application is complete and submitted by the deadline or it will be disqualified. Never pay for scholarship services Talk to your school counselor or contact EducationQuest about the many free options available. Where to find scholarships n ScholarshipQuest at EducationQuest.org contains over 2,000 local and state scholarships. We also have resources at our offices in Kearney, Lincoln and Omaha. n High school counselor s office visit at least once a week during your senior year to learn about local and national awards. n n n Potential colleges contact colleges of interest for a list of scholarships they offer along with information about criteria, deadlines, and application procedures. National scholarship search sites visit free sites such as: Unigo.com CollegeBoard.org Petersons.com FindTuition.com Cappex.com SchoolSoup.com Supercollege.com CollegeData.com Chegg.com InternationalScholarships.com Other resources could include clubs and organizations, parents employers, and civic organizations.
