What are your 4-H goals for 2018? Explore a new project area? Make it to all your club meetings? Make new friends? When thinking about goal setting, remember ART; what is the action of your goal, what is the result of the goal and the timeline in which you will strive to reach your goal. 4-H NEWS/OPPORTUNITIES SUMMER HELP WANTED-Summer 4-H Program Assistant FEBRUARY 2018 Summer 4-H Program Assistant to assist with county fair preparation and summer programming. Knowledge of the Allamakee County 4-H Program and Allamakee County Fair required. Compensation based on experience. EOE Selling Dates: NOW February 2 2018 FRUIT & BUTTERBRAID SPRING FUNDRAISER Delivery: Friday, March 9, 2018, 1:00-4:00 p.m. Heitman/Kruger Pioneer Bldg, (3/4 mile south off of Hwy 9 on Hwy 51) We have mailed the Fruit and Butter Braid order forms to all enrolled 4-H families. Order forms are due to your club leaders by Friday, February 2 (or otherwise indicated by club leader). Members need to ask friends and family to make checks payable to the club. If more order forms are needed, contact club leaders or stop in at the Extension Office. Attention Leaders: All club members Fruit and Butter Braid orders must be transferred to a club master sheet. Master sheets are due to the Extension Office by Thursday, February 8. MARKET DAIRY GOAT PROJECT NEW for 2018: Market Dairy Goat Wether Class We are very excited to offer a new class for the 2018 Allamakee County Fair. We have added a Market Dairy Goat class to the Meat Goat show. Wether goats (castrated male goat) will be shown in this class. Interested in this low cost project but you don t have access to a goat or a place to house it? We have housing arrangements and goats available for those interested in this new class, please contact the Extension Office or Brad Berns, Goat Superintendent at 563-535-7509. HOUSTON COUNTY 4-H GOAT WORKSHOP Houston County 4-H is hosting a Dairy & Meat Goat Workshop on Saturday, February 10, 10:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. at the Houston Community Center, Houston Minnesota. Topics include Goats First Year Birth To One Year, My Goats Diet All about Feed and Hay, What Should my Goat Have for Shots and Parasite Control. Lunch will be provided. To register call 507-725-5807 by February 2, cost is $5. Rabbit workshop open to all youth 4 th -12 th grades in Allamakee, Bremer, Chickasaw, Clayton, Howard, Fayette, Floyd and Winneshiek Counties. Come explore about the Rabbit project and learn showmanship, breeding techniques, what should be taken to fair, tips for summer heat, as well as rabbit illnesses. When: Sunday February 18 2018, 3:00-4:30 pm MULTI-COUNTY RABBIT WORKSHOP Where: Chickasaw County Extension Office Who: Any rabbit enthusiasts wanting to learn more! SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES ALLAMAKEE COUNTY DAIRY PROMO BOARD SCHOLARSHIP STATE RECOGNITION OPPORTUNITIES FEBRUARY 2018 The Allamakee County Dairy Promotion Board is awarding a college scholarship to any Allamakee County student(s) enrolling in Dairy Science or an agriculture field of study. Pick up an application at the Allamakee County Extension Office or visit http://www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/news/college-scholarships. Winner(s) will be announced at the Annual Dairy Banquet in March. Application deadline is March 1. ALLAMAKEE COUNTY 4-H SCHOLARSHIP Graduating seniors interested in applying for the Allamakee County 4-H College Scholarship must submit a completed application and (2) letters of support by March 1 to the Extension Office. The Allamakee 4-H Scholarship Committee interview candidates and will award scholarships. Inquire about this scholarship and others at the Extension Office or at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/news/college-scholarships ALLAMAKEE COUNTY FAIR BOARD SCHOLARSHIP The Allamakee County Fair Board is awarding an Allamakee County Fair Scholarship to graduating seniors enrolled in either 4-H or FFA. Applicants must submit a complete application and (2) letters of support to the Allamakee County Extension Office by March 1. Applications are available at http:// www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/news/college-scholarships ALLAMAKEE COUNTY CATTLEMEN SCHOLARSHIP The Allamakee County Cattlemen are sponsoring a scholarship for students attending a school in Allamakee County or a resident of Allamakee County. All applicants must be a current member of the FFA or 4-H programs, or their parents members of the Allamakee Cattlemen s Association. For graduating high school seniors only. Applications must be emailed to Allamakee Co. Cattlemen allamakeecatttlemen@gmail.com and tillhillcattle@gmail.com by April 15. Applications are available at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/ news/college-scholarships. You deserve to be recognized for your hard work and have some fun too! There are many opportunities for recognition awards or to represent Iowa on the state and national level for youth in 9 th -12 th grades. These opportunities include: National 4-H Conference: week long trip to Washington D.C. with a goal for youth share their perspective on the 4-H program with national leaders, including Congressional members National 4-H Congress: week long trip to National 4-H in Atlanta promoting leadership, community service, team building, and cultural issues State 4-H Council: work directly with Iowa 4-H Youth Development to represent the program across the state, plan the annual Iowa 4-H Youth Conference the end of June, hosting between 700 to 1000 Iowa youth on the ISU campus State Project Award : $100 award to top 50 applicants who outline and demonstrate mastery, leadership, communication, and service in a specific project area in their 4-H career Learn more about applying for these opportunities at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/recognitionopportunities. 4-H OPPORTUNITIES 2018 APPAREL DESIGNS: SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED FEBRUARY 2018 We are looking for the next apparel design artist to create a new county 4-H design for 2018! Designs need to be submitted to the Extension Office by Friday, February 2. All artwork must be original and should include the 4-H clover and/or the word 4-H in their entirety. Designs should not be larger than 8.5x11 and should have no more than two colors! The winner will receive their design on a t-shirt for FREE! WATERLOO BLACKHAWK 4-H GAMES 4-H members and their parents can cheer the Waterloo Black Hawks Hockey Team on Saturday, March 10 vs. Dubuque (Super Mario Night) at 7:05 p.m. or Friday, March 16 vs. Team USA at 7:05 p.m. at Young Arena. This would be a fun winter club activity! 4-H JUNIOR CAMPS COMING IN JUNE 2018 Junior 4-H members Come join us for tons of fun, adventures galore, and lifelong friendships from northeast Iowa. Summer 4-H Camps will be held at Pine Bluff 4-H Camp located near Decorah. Junior 4-H members (grades 4 th -6 th ) will have two camps to choose from with the dates being: June 13-14 or June 19-20 Camp registration deadline is April 16. See Page 8 for registration form. WANTED: 4-H CAMP COUNSELORS Attention High School 4-H Members! Do you like the outdoors? Are you up for adventures with junior 4-H members? Then being a 4-H camp counselor may be for you. We are looking for 4-H youth counselors to provide leadership in partnership with 4-H Staff at the Regional Pine Bluff 4-H Camps. Both junior camps are 2 days and one night. Junior camps will be June 13-14 and June 19-20. Sign up for one camp or both. Applications will be available for 9-12 th grade members. Contact the Extension Office for applications and more information. Deadline to apply is April 16. 4-H SUMMER ADVENTURE TRIP: 6-8 th Graders Join 4-H members from Region 4 for 2 days and 1 night of Honoring the PAST, Celebrating the PRESENT, and Building the FUTURE. Youth will be staying overnight in a motel in Ames. The adventure includes stops at the 1913 antique carousel in Story City, Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad, James H Andrew Railroad Museum & History Center, Bio-tech lab at Iowa State University, and Birthplace of the 4-H Emblem in Clarion. There will also be swimming, miniature golf, games and more! Open to all 4-H members currently in 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grades. Trip will be June 7 & 8. The registration fee is $150.00 and is due by April 16, 2018. Please see page 9 for registration information. LIVESTOCK QUIZ BOWL COMPETITION March 24, 2018 at Kildee Hall on ISU Campus there will be a 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl Competition. The winner of each division will represent Iowa at the National 4-H Contest held during AKSARBEN in Nebraska in September. Teams need to consist of 3-5 individuals. Mixed Divison ages 10-19 (as of January 1). Senior Division ages 14-19 (as of January 1). LIVESTOCK REMINDERS COUNTY FAIR SWINE IDENTIFICATION There are two ways that 4-H & FFA members can identify hogs for the Swine Show at the Allamakee County Fair. The Swine Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, April 7 at the fairgrounds from 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Members need to attend the weigh-in if they want to participate in the Rate of Gain Contest or Derby Class. 4-H youth will need to go into 4 -H Online and verify their swine weigh-in information. OR members can self-tag swine by picking up tags and a tagger from the Extension Office between April 15-May 15. All swine ID forms must be completed. If ear notched please note that on ID sheet, and returned to the Extension Office with a picture of each tag in the hog s ear by May 15. Digital photos are acceptable by email to dahlstro@iastate.edu. Members who self-tag pigs are not eligible for Rate-of-Gain or Derby class. If you are interested in showing Swine at the 2018 Iowa State Fair please contact Morgan. LIVESTOCK ID s DUE MAY 15 Livestock identification will be done through 4-H Online (www.iowa.4honline.com) for Breeding beef, Horses, Dairy, Dairy Goats, Dogs, Breeding Meat Goats, and Breeding Sheep. Identification is due in by Tuesday, May 15, 2018. To enter non-weigh in species, you will need to log into your 4-H online family record, and add the needed information to the Animal ID for each member s record. Weigh-In animals will be entered into 4-H online by county extension staff after the weigh-in. It will be the responsibility of the member to log into 4-H Online to verify that all information is correct. Information that is not verified by the member within the verification time frame will be locked and will not be able to be changed after that date. If you have questions about this process feel free to contact the Allamakee County Extension Office. Each 4-H member is responsible for entering their own ID s. Directions and help sheets are at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/enrollment/help.htm. Reminder: Dairy Cattle and Horses that were ID d last year, may be re-entered with the click of a button! 2018 FAIR BOOK UPDATES We are working on finishing the 2018 Allamakee County Fairbook. We are planning on getting the updates out to the enrolled 4-H families in March. Here is a BRIEF list of new classes, show orders, and rule changes, please see your 2018 Fairbook updates for the COMPLETE rules. MEAT GOAT DEPARTMENT 108 we have added a Market Dairy Goat Class and will award the top five Market Goats with Rate of Gain awards. BEEF DEPARTMENT 101 Show order: Showmanship Senior, Intermediate, Junior (Fit is Optional), Bucket/Bottle Calf, Breeding Beef Classes, Market Beef Classes, Allamakee County Cattlemen s Home Raised Beef DOG DEPARTMENT 111 Added classes Clover Kids (grade 3), Barn Hunt, Scent Work, Tricks. Please see Department 111 for additional rule additions and changes. HORSE & PONY DEPARTMENT 121 EXHIBITOR CONDUCT 19. Horses exhibiting potentially dangerous behavior (kicking, striking, rearing, biting, etc.) will not be allowed in the warm up/on deck area where other exhibitors are gathering for a class. Reminder, this year we will execute #28 ETHICS & SPORTSMANSHIP that exhibitors may only win each division once, upon winning a division exhibitors may move up to next age division or can compete in their perspective age group but are ineligible to win and can only receive up to Honorable Mention. Once they reach the senior level they may compete indefinitely. a. The exception to the advancing rule is exhibitors exhibiting in the Dog or Horse project. Those species must participate in their perspective age division. FSQA TRAINING All 4-H members wanting to exhibit any beef, dairy, sheep, swine, goat, poultry, or rabbits MUST be FSQA certified to be eligible to show at the 2017 Allamakee County Fair and/or the Iowa State Fair. FSQA Training will be held Wednesday, April 11, at 1:00 p.m. at the NICC Waukon Campus or Saturday, May 19, 9:30 a.m. at the Allamakee County Extension Office. Please call to RSVP. Junior members (Grades 4-6) must attend training every year. Intermediate & Senior members (Grades 7-12) have the option to test for certification at their age level. Tests can be taken at the Extension Office any time between 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. You need to receive 70% to pass. You may take up to 3 tests in one day. 6

2016 LEADER REMINDERS FEBRUARY 2018 USDA YOUTH LOANS The Farm Service Agency has the USDA Youth Loan Program available for any 4-H/FFA members, ages 10-21 years of age, and looking for help to finance their projects. Applications and brochures can be picked up at the Extension Office or contact your local FSA office 563-382-2255. OPERATION RE-LEAF The ISUEO Allamakee County has teamed up with Alliant Energy to provide trees to their customers for a small fee. We are looking for motivated, 4-H clubs to help at the Operation Re Leaf on Thursday, April 19, 4:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. during the time that customers may pick up their trees at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds. Expectations of the club include but are not limited to helping customers wrap and load trees. In return of a great community service project for your club we are also offering this opportunity as a fundraiser for your hard work. Interested clubs should contact the Extension Office for an application. 2018 FAIR THEME & DATES Preparations have started for the 2018 Allamakee County Fair! You can also start preparations on booth decorating ideas. The 2018 theme is: Your Passport to Adventure The 2018 Allamakee County Fair has been scheduled for July 18-22, 2018. FAIR IMPROVEMENT REQUEST The Allamakee County Fair Board is in the initial planning stages of building a new rabbit/poultry barn at the fairgrounds. If clubs are interested in donating initial seed money for this project, please contact the Extension Office. The Fair Board is also looking for a 4-H er or club to make 2 4x4 barn quilts to use as covers in the lower beef barn. They could be decorated with 4-H and FFA colors/emblems. Contact a Fair Board member for more information. LEADERS: UPCOMING DEADLINES AND REMINDERS As club activities are planned, please turn driver s names and last 5 digits of social security number into the Extension Office a minimum of 3 weeks prior to scheduled events so paperwork can be sent to those who will be transporting youth. This is to assure everyone is properly screened. If you are planning a club activity that is NOT documented in your club program, please remember to contact the Extension Office about insurance coverage for special activities. Club Visits As you are working on your Club Program Books if you see a month that you would like Morgan to attend and bring an activity for the youth, please contact her soon to get that date on her calendar. Fruit & Butter Braid Fundraiser Letters with information and order forms will be mailed to all enrolled 4-H ers soon! Forms will be due to leaders on February 2 and club master forms will be due to the Extension Office on February 8. Delivery is scheduled for March 9 from 1-4:00 PM at the Heitman/Kruger Pioneer Building. Winter Waivers Is your club planning to go sledding, snowboarding, ice skating or other winter recreation activities? Waivers need to be signed by parents and 4-H ers. 2018 4-H Summer Adventure Trip June 7-8, 2018 Join us for 2 days and 1 night of Honoring the PAST, Celebrating the PRESENT, and Building the FUTURE. Youth will be staying overnight at a motel in Ames. The adventure includes stops at the 1913 antique carousel in Story City, Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad, James H Andrew Railroad Museum & History Center, Bio-tech lab at Iowa State University, and Birthplace of the 4-H Emblem in Clarion. There will also be swimming, miniature golf, games and more! Open to all 4-H members currently in 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grades.
