Dual-career: Outside the Academy HERC recently received funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to develop a model for meeting the needs of non-academic spouses. Research indicates 72% of faculty members have employed partners. Of those, equal numbers seek academic and non-academic employment. The goal of the Outside the Academy Employment Initiative is to partner with government, health care and corporate employers that share HERC s values to increase the # of job opportunities for the spouses and partners HERC members seek to recruit. Outside the Academy will be pioneered by Washington State HERC and the model will be shared with other HERCs that can opt in or out according to regional preference.
