AGENDA 1. RFP a. Hiring plans b. Startup plans c. Space plans d. Curriculum development e. Bio Sketches for core faculty 2. Moving the UCF Needle 3. Deans, Directors, & Chairs letters 4. General questions and discussion time

From pages 6 & 7 of the RFP document

Goal: Hire the best TEAM to solve the problem. Hires should not only fill a strategic area in the cluster BUT must also strengthen their home department Recruiting interdisciplinary scholars, problem solvers, nontraditional disciplines Where do you plan to recruit? How will you recruit a diverse candidate pool? Market value of recruits (GIS geographer vs. political scientist) Salary disparity

From the Deans and Chairs Perspective: Distribution of hires What happens if one participating college/dept. does not get a hire? Example from GIS 4 participating departments; 3 hires; in 2 depts. Timeline for hires Ex. Hire the anchor first and incorporate them into hiring remaining cluster? Ex. Hire all members in one pool based on needed areas

Startup should be driven by the collective cluster not the sum of the individual startups. What does the cluster need to be successful? Splitting the startup package among individuals and cluster (%/%). The goal is for individuals to get more than they would individually by being part of cluster. Generalize pool for all members for shared resources/staff? Different infrastructure needs: sharing of space & resources Different disciplines have different startup needs

Faculty start dates in Fall 2018 Co-location of cluster does this matter? Cluster will be given priority in space allocation (both in existing space and new buildings) Space is an issue Short-term plans (2018-2020) Long-term plans (2020-beyond)

Interdisciplinary Research (IRIF) building phase 1 & 2 (est. Aug. 2017 & Dec. 2017) laboratories & offices When downtown opens, on-campus space will be vacated potential use for clusters. (Fall 2019) Fall 2018 ~13,000 sq ft of mainly office/collaboration space should become available. Optimization of current space Clearly articulate vision and potential renovations if planned

Focus on interdisciplinary areas Courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels with students from multiple disciplines Development of team taught courses at both levels Potential certificate programs Potential degree programs Address need for these courses/programs if possible

A Bio Sketch of each core faculty member is needed in the full proposal Word Template will be available on the FCI website, Resources & FAQ section.

How will your cluster achieve the following? National or international prominence; Integration with the university s new Collective Impact Strategic Plan; Scholarly and creative works that can help address challenging societal problems facing us in the coming century; Enhanced capacity to develop a robust, diverse, and recurring funding base that is commensurate with the proposed scholarly area; Scholarly output that would have an influence across multiple disciplines; Strengthened undergraduate/graduate education at UCF (i.e. increase quality of our student body and increase the number of research degrees); and Proposed recruiting strategy for the cluster.

1. 1 joint letter from the participating Deans/VPs 2. 1 joint letter from the participating Directors/Chairs Address both letters to the Provost

1. Brief overview 2. Discuss how this cluster fits into the strategic priorities of the participating colleges/units and the Collective Impact Strategic Plan for the University 3. Hiring Plan / Startup costs / Space commitment 4. Convince the Provost that this cluster will move the needle for UCF and that each of the participating colleges/units are willing to share resources and infrastructure to facilitate the success of the cluster.

1. Discuss how this cluster fits into the strategic priorities of the participating departments 2. Discuss if the participating departments faculty are ready for interdisciplinary scholarship and evaluating participating faculty appropriately (i.e. tenure/promotion) 3. How will the cluster hires strengthen participating departments? 4. Discuss how the departments participate in this cluster if they do not get a hire; are they still willing to collaborate with the cluster?

Work with your Deans, Directors & Chairs Full proposals (10-page) and both letters due Feb. 3, 2017 5:00 PM, to facultycluster@ucf.edu Two pdf documents: 1. Proposal, Appendix, Core Faculty Bio Sketches 2. Letters from Deans & Directors/Chairs
