FEBRuary 2017 Hello Federation Friends, Happy Valentine s Day! We Our Life Members! Our annual Life Member Recognition Luncheon will be held on Thursday, February 23 at 10:00, in the Courtyard at Callanwolde. We will recognize all of our Life Members, and especially new Life Members being honored by their clubs or individuals. (The due date to submit your application and $50, to either Joy Zaidan or Glenndolyn Hallman, is February 13.) The 2017 Life Member of the Year will be announced at the conclusion of the program. Become a Life Member and ensure perpetual Life to the Federation s Garden Center. TREASURE SOMEONE TODAY! The Federation Board will provide the food for our luncheon. Due to the length of our program, there will not be a mini-flower show this month. In case of inclement weather, please remember that if the DeKalb County schools are closed, our meeting will probably be canceled. We will send out an e-blast either the night before, or early the morning of our meeting if that happens. Pull a tab for Ronald mcdonal d I want to remind all the clubs to get their aluminum tabs in by the February General Meeting so they can be counted for Award #38 Mary Jane Shearer Pull-A-Tab Award at the Awards Luncheon. If you can weigh them and remove any steel tabs, it will be appreciated, but if not, I will do it, and deliver them to the Ronald McDonald House. Please note that this award will be presented to both a small and a large club. (Pull A Tab Chairman, Judy Lemoine)

Love our pollinators seed exchange Expand your garden and invite our pollinators in! Purchase 5 packages of herb/flower seeds; keep 1, and bring the other 4 to the February Federation Meeting to trade. You will take home 4 different packages, and give your pollinators some variety! (We will do this instead of our regular monthly plant swap.) (Pollinators Chairman, Carol Hayes). Valentines for Veterans I am pleased to report that earlier this week I delivered 1,065 Valentines for the patients at the VA Hospital. Thanks to all of you who supported this important Federation project! Let me remind Clubs to send $25.00 for Garden Therapy to GCG for seeds and planting beds to be furnished to the various hospitals in Georgia. This money should be received by GCG by March 1 st. (See the GCG web site for complete instructions.) Your club will receive a Certificate of Appreciation at the Redbud District Meeting. (Garden Therapy Chairman, Joanne Bennett) Garden center news The Garden Center is back to its regular schedule after a slow start due to the bug circulating around just about everywhere. Sandy Reed and Alice Boyd are continuing with library cataloging and we re looking to purchase new shelving. Additionally, we want to remind you that there now is air-conditioning in the Conservatory and it can, and should, be used for club meetings and events. Please contact me at drmchunter@yahoo.com to reserve your dates. Remember we are always closed when there are Redbud, GCG, or NGC meetings. This year we re also closing on March 16 for Federation awards judging. There are still opportunities to volunteer: 1 st and 5 th Tuesdays 1 st, 2 nd and 5 th Wednesdays 1 st and 2 nd Fridays Look for Garden Center work days coming soon! (Garden Center Director, Diane Hunter) A Gift From Joan Thornton Even after her death, Joan continues to support her beloved Federation with a bequest of $7,895. We are deeply grateful, and have communicated our thanks to her family. We miss her.

The League of Legends All of us have so many of those amazing folks who have given to their garden clubs, and to the Federation, for many years. They inspire us, and are always willing to support us with their wisdom and their heart. We are planning to honor them with a presentation each year at our May General Meeting as they are inducted into our newly created Legends Club. How does one become a member? The Club is open to current garden club members 90 years old and above and who, by their involvement, inspire us all to keep planting and sharing. We re asking each club to send us the names of those members they would like to recognize by April 20, 2017. Each inductee class will be honored with a special planting on Garden Center grounds, and recognized with a plaque in the Garden Center. Send your nominees to Diane Hunter, drmchunter@yahoo.com. Federation presidents reports and annual dues Just a reminder that Presidents Reports and dues are due by March 1. Forms and instructions were sent in a separate e-mail. (Federation President, Renie Faulkenberry) Federation awards Federation awards applications are due by March 1. Complete details and forms were sent in a separate e-mail. Our Annual Awards Luncheon will be held on April 27. (Federation President, Renie Faulkenberry) Redbud district news The Redbud District Winter Board Meeting will be held on February 13 at Callanwolde. District Chairman Reports will be sent to District Club Presidents and Board members, with a request that they be shared with their members. (Redbud District Director, Janet McGinnis) Getting Ready for Convention and Redbud District is hosting! Wow! It s getting closer! Many thanks to all those Remarkable Redbud volunteers -- individuals and clubs who have gotten the 2017 GCG Convention off to an amazing start. We hope we get a lot of Atlanta attendees for the Convention. You can find the schedule, speakers list and registration form online, and in the winter and spring issues of Garden Gateways. It s all About the B s will cover the latest info on birds, bees and butterflies, with bats sneaking in under the tent! We ll update you on environmental threats, Georgia s songbirds, butterfly promotion, bees and more. In addition, we ll tour the Little White House and dedicate the patio renovation and butterfly garden created with generous Redbud donations, and grants from GCG. Don t forget vendors, prizes and awards! It s a blooming good time among the azaleas! So, let s show those Districts just how remarkable we are! (Convention Chairman, Diane Hunter); (Convention Registrar, Rigby Duncan)

Garden club of Georgia news FLOWER SHOW SCHOOL, COURSE IV In memory of former GCG President Suzanne Wheeler, North Georgia Council of Flower Show Judges is sponsoring a Flower Show School at Bellmere Garden House in Johns Creek. Come and join us March 27-30, 2017 for Course IV. Learn all about flower shows and how to judge floral designs and horticulture. Well-known instructors are lined up to teach. We are very fortunate to have NGC Flower Show Schools Chairman and Horticulture Instructor, Dorthy Yard, talk about Collections, Displays, Annuals and Biennials. She will focus on Hedera (ivy) and Tagetes (marigolds), and how to grow, show and judge them. Dorthy will also present Flower Show Procedure and the rules associated with holding a flower show. Jo Krallman, NGC Flower Show School Design Instructor, will exhibit and discuss Table Designs and Petite Designs. Jo is known as the queen of table designs. Flower Show School is not only for prospective flower show exhibitors and judges, but also for garden club members and all persons interested in flower design and horticulture. While the primary purpose of these courses is to train those aspiring to become flower show judges, many people attend for information only. The cost for Course IV is $130.00 for full-time students and a judge s special of $90 for the two-day course or $55 for a one-day session. All others may attend for a daily rate of $65. For further information, contact Joy Zaidan, GCG Flower Show Schools Chairman, at jzaidan@bellsouth.net or 770-493-8475. (Registration form was sent in a separate e-mail.) Callanwolde Corner At our January meeting, DeKalb Federation was pleased to present Callanwolde Fine Arts Center with a check for $20,000 reimbursement for the replacement and upgrade of the air conditioning system in the Conservatory. The lack of air conditioning has been an ongoing problem for us for the last several years, which has impeded our ability to utilize the Conservatory for meetings and events, as well as for rentals. We are grateful to Callanwolde for coordinating this project between us and DeKalb County. Pictured from left: Diane Hunter and Renie Faulkenberry, DeKalb Federation; Peggy Johnson, Executive Director and Christina Bray, Director of Community Engagement & Visual Arts, Callanwolde Fine Arts Center.
