Adult Awards Overview Girl Scouts of Suffolk County is fortunate to have more than 7,000 Adult Volunteers. These volunteers give themselves and their time to the Girl Scout Movement, and, in turn, reap the reward of helping girls become the strong, confident leaders of tomorrow. Their dedication emphasizes the qualities that Girl Scouts value. Adult Awards in Girl Scouting acknowledge those volunteers who provide service above and beyond what is expected. The criteria for these awards are established either by GSUSA or GSSC and focus on leadership, implementation of goals, acceptance of responsibility, and consistent follow-through. 4
Nomination Process Here are some important nomination points: Recruit a diverse audience to submit the required Adult Award Reference form. For Council-Level awards, the Adult Award Committee will determine recipients. Do not designate a specific award in your nomination. For SU Level awards, the SU Team reviews and approves the nomination. Submit online nomination forms no later than the date specified Questions? Email adultawards@gssc.us 5
Nomination Checklist Be sure candidate is a registered Girl Scout. Include a list of the nominee s previous awards. Explain your personal connection to the nominee. Include nominee s specific accomplishments. Include insights or anecdotes. Include examples of nominee s personal growth since previous awards. Highlight the nominee s achievements. Be specific. Demonstrate how the nominee has exceeded expectations for the position she or he holds. Submit online nomination forms no later than the date specified. 6
Council-Level Awards All Council-Level awards are reviewed by the Adult Awards Committee and submitted to the Board of Directors for approval. There are seven (7) Council-Level awards that may be presented to individual adult volunteers and three (3) award possibilities for Service Units. Each candidate must be a Girl Scout in good standing. The nomination procedure is as follows: 1. Individual/Group submits an online nomination form with candidate s name, position, and description of service that went above and beyond requirements. Remember - The Adult Awards Committee will determine the award. Do not designate a specific award. 2. Submit two (2) separate online reference forms with the nomination. These references must be from Girl Scout adult members familiar with the specific service performed. 3. Candidates will receive a letter letting them know that they have been selected for an award. 4. Council-Level Awards For Individuals Serving The Council-At-Large Thanks Badge II Any registered, adult G.S. to recognize continued outstanding service given by a Thanks Badge recipient. Board of Directors Beacon Award Any registered, adult G.S. to recognize continued outstanding service given by a Thanks Badge recipient. Thanks Badge Any registered, adult G.S. to recognize outstanding service that benefits the total council or the entire G.S. organization. GSSC Council Award Any registered, adult G.S. to recognize outstanding services that have a lasting impact on the council. For Individuals Serving 2 or More Service Units Honor Pin Any registered, adult G.S. to recognize outstanding service to two or more Service Units. 8
Council-Level Awards GSUSA Volunteer of Excellence Award For Individuals Serving 1 Service Unit Any registered adult G.S. who have contributed outstanding service while partnering directly with girls in any pathway to implement the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) or who have contributed outstanding service in support of GSSC s mission delivery to girl and adult members. Appreciation Pin Any registered, adult G.S. to recognize outstanding service to at least one Service Unit. For Service Units Millennium Award - Gold, Silver, or Bronze Any Service Unit meeting the criteria listed on nomination form. Service Unit-Level Awards There are three (3) awards for service that may be awarded to volunteers at the Service Unit-Level that require Board approval. There are five (5) awards for service that may be awarded to volunteers at the Service Unit-Level and do not require Board approval. Each candidate must be a Girl Scout in good standing. It is appropriate to use Service Unit funds to provide dinner at GSSC s Annual Adult Awards Event for all Service Unit-Level award recipients. The nomination procedure is as follows: 1. Individual/Group familiar with the service performed submits to the service unit team the name of the candidate, position held, account of particular service to be recognized, and the results of the service beyond that required for the position held. 2. Service unit team reviews the information and approves nomination. 3. President s Circle Award, The Service Unit Star Award, the Spirit of Scouting Award will be presented at GSSC s Annual Adult Awards Dinner and provided by GSSC. 4. Outstanding Leader, Outstanding Volunteer, First-Year Leaders, Keep the Promise, Live the Law Award, and Leader Thank You awards are presented by Service Unit at the dinner or local ceremony, with pins provided by the Service Unit. Names are announced at GSSC s Annual Adult Awards Dinner, which is an appropriate time to pin recipients. 10
Service Unit-Level Awards Requires Board Approval One recipient per Service Unit per year President s Circle Award Any registered, adult G.S. to recognize outstanding service to one Service Unit promoting G.S. in the community one adult per SU. The Service Unit Star Award Two recipients per Service Unit per year Any Service Unit Volunteer meeting the criteria. All Leaders who qualify Spirit of Scouting Award Leaders who exemplify the ideal that more girls together make for a broader G.S. experience with the following troop-size requirements: Daisy: 20+ Girls Brownie: 25+ Girls Junior: 21+ Girls Cadette: 16+ Girls Senior: 15+ Girls Ambassador: 15+ Girls 11
Service Unit-Level Awards Board Approval Not Required Outstanding Leader Award Any registered Troop Leader who has performed service beyond the expectations for the position. Service Unit Team Outstanding Volunteer Award Any registered adult G.S., other than a Leader, who has performed service beyond the expectations for the position held. Service Unit Team First-Year Leaders Award Trained 1st year Leaders who have demonstrated excellence. Service Unit Team Keep the Promise, Live the Law Award Any registered, adult G.S. volunteer who returns for a 4th year of service. Service Unit Team Leader Thank You An adult volunteer with 10 or more consecutive years with the same troop or group level who will not be continuing as a Leader. Service Unit Team 12

Years of Service Pin The Years of Service Pin recognizes an adult in Girl Scouting for her or his years of active service as an adult in 5 year intervals. 10 years and above are recognized at the GSSC s Annual Adult Awards 14
