While You Are in the Waiting Room At WakeMed, we welcome visitors. They can boost a patient s spirits, ease fears and help communicate patient needs. Our goal in the Critical Care & Surgery Waiting Room is to provide a comfortable, clean, safe and peaceful environment while you are waiting to see your loved one. Please keep the following in mind while you are with us. You are welcome to enjoy beverages in the waiting room. Food can be enjoyed in Au Bon Pain or Café 3000. Feel free to charge your cell phone in the waiting room. Please speak softly and place your phone on vibrate to maintain your privacy and to keep the waiting room quiet. Children must be accompanied by an adult. You are welcome to bring books and video games (with earphones) to keep children occupied. Adults and children should be free of communicable illnesses such as influenza, stomach viruses or colds. In keeping with our focus on a healing environment, disruptive behavior and unsafe practices by children or adults are not acceptable. These situations, while rare, will be addressed directly and promptly. The Designated Support Person & Spokesperson All surgical and critical care patients are asked to designate a support person who is welcome to stay with the patient at all times (according to the patient s wishes) except during certain procedures. Additional visitors are welcome in PACU for 15 minutes at 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, 5 pm and 6:30 pm. The support person and the patient (if able) or the next of kin (if the patient is not able) are encouraged to designate a family spokesperson and choose a password to use when receiving updates about the patient s condition. The spokesperson s role is to receive information about the patient and share the information with appropriate friends and family members to help ensure that everyone receives the same information. Keeping You Informed Receptionists in the Critical Care & Surgery Waiting Room are available 24 hours a day. They make sure your family spokesperson receives timely patient updates. Obtaining a temporary pager (one per family, please!) from the waiting room receptionist is a good way to ensure you are not missing vital patient updates when you go to the cafeteria or gift shop.
