EXPLANTORY NOTES FOR: Application form full proposal (Annex 6.3) Responsible Innovation (NWO-MVI), 2 nd round 2017 Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Full proposal Responsible Innovation (NWO-MVI), 2 nd round 2017 1. Project title State a brief title for the application. 2. Summary Give a short summary of the project (maximum 250 words) that provides a brief description of the problem and task set, method, and intended results. At the end give six keywords as well. 3. Main applicant State the name of the main applicant here (max. one person). 4. Co-applicants State the names of any co-applicants here (max. three persons). 5. Type of project and selected top sector In the table below state what type of research project you want to work up: is it a large or a small research project, which top-sector specific agenda item did you choose? In the case of top-sector-specific research: state the name of the top sector and the code of the chosen line of research (for example CI Smart wearables). In the case of the BBoL line of research: state for which top sectors (at least two) participating in BBoL your proposal will be elaborated (in order of importance) as well as in your connected MVI proposal. Finally state whether your research is relevant for Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) and if it is then whether it will be partly realised in an LMIC. State in which LMICs the research will be realised. 6. Fields of research Choose the main discipline and subdisciplines relevant to your intended research proposal from the list at http://www.nwo.nl/en/funding/funding+process+explained/research+fields. In the table state the main discipline of the humanities α, natural/technical sciences β and social and behavioural sciences components γ (e.g. Philosophy, Technical Sciences or Economics). Then state the subdisciplines and the associated codes in order of importance (e.g. Ethics, moral philosophy, code 33.25.00, Chemical engineering, process engineering, code 14.50.00 or Macroeconomics, code 38.20.00). For each main discipline you can state a maximum of two subdisciplines. 7. Members of the consortium In the table provide an overview of the persons involved and the organisations they represent. Make a clear distinction between the scientific researchers and the private partners or their representatives who provide the matching. For the private partners state the registration number at the Chamber of Commerce (KvK) and if there is a charitable (ANBI) status (Public Benefit Organisation). Motivate (if applicable) that the contribution from the private partners will not be directly or indirectly funded from state support. State any other partners you would like to involve in the project: this covers partners that do not fall under the definitions of 'private' and '(semi-) public) or partners that will not provide cofunding. In the same table state how they will be involved in the project. 1

8. Members of the research team In the table provide an overview of the intended researchers who will be directly involved in the realisation of the research, including the positions applied for (PhD, postdoc, replacement). For each position, state the intended duration (in months) and size (in fte). If the names of the intended persons are already known then you can state these. If the names are not yet known then you should state: "to be advertised". For each researcher state his/her disciplinary background in terms of humanities (α), natural and technical sciences (β) or social and behavioural sciences (γ) (for example: Technical sciences - β). N.B. The duration and size of the positions applied for in the table of part 8 should be identical to the specifications entered in budget template of part 21 (Research budget)! 9. Period of funding In the table, state the total duration of the project (in months), as equally the intended start and end date of the research. Please note: projects awarded funding should start no more than six months after funding has been awarded. 2

START QUESTION 10 ON A NEW PAGE 10. Relationship to the agenda of the chosen top sector & to representative research Motivate (max. 300 words) why in your opinion the proposal fits within the MVI agenda and connects with the relevant top sectors. For top-sector-specific research this concerns the fit within the chosen line of research of the top sector concerned (for example: CI Smart wearables within the top sector Creative industry). For BBoL research this concerns the top sectors (at least two) within which the BBoL research as well as your MVI proposal are elaborated. You should refer to the relevant parts of the agendas (http://topsectoren.nl [in Dutch]). State the number of words as well. Finally, state how the proposal is complementary to, and builds further upon the results of previous research within NWO-MVI, or adjoining national or international research outside of this. 11. Description of the proposed research Give a brief description (max. 3500 words for "large" projects and max. 2500 words for "small" projects) of the proposed research, taking into account the assessment criteria (Call, Section 4.3.2) You should at least devote attention to the following aspects under separate headings: a. General scientific quality Research question, scientific importance, originality/innovativeness of the research, theoretical framework, approach/methodology. b. Scientific quality within the Responsible Innovation (NWO-MVI) frameworks Added value of the interdisciplinarity (collaboration across humanities, natural sciences and social sciences) and the design perspective (how will the ethical and societal aspects be incorporated into the design process of the innovations/innovation pathways?). c. Research group / embedding of the research Motivate why the chosen team composition and organisational embedding (as stated in part 7 (Members of the consortium) and part 8 (Members of the research team)) are in your opinion suitable for achieving the intended results. Also motivate why the choice has been made for collaboration between different universities/institutions or why that has not been done. Further you should also motivate the choice for the intended appointments: why, for example, a PhD appointment instead of a postdoc, or vice versa?, etc. 3

START THE LIST OF REFERENCES ON A NEW PAGE 11 List of references The list of references should be included as an annex to part 11. This may be no more than two pages A4 (9 pt) in length. The list of references must include a list of at most 10 (key) publications from the national and international literature with respect to the theme of the proposed research. 4

START PART 12 ON A NEW PAGE 12. International orientation and/or international collaboration Give a brief description (max. 400 words) of the international orientation of your research. If your research will probably be carried out in Low and Middle-Income Countries then you should also state what the relevance of your research for these countries is and how these countries concerned will be involved in the research. 13. Work programme Specify and phase the work plan for the intended duration of the project in a clear schedule with time planning. You should also state the names of the researchers who will deliver the products concerned. In the case of doctoral research, a planning through to the PhD graduation must be given (within the appointment period and the total duration of the project!). 14. Planned scientific deliverables State which research results are intended and in which form these will appear. This point solely concerns the dissemination of research results within the academic world. 5

START PART 15 ON A NEW PAGE 15. Societal relevance / knowledge utilization a) Members of the valorisation panel Provide an overview of the people involved and the organisations that they represent in the table. State for all persons whether they have given their commitment and what the motivation is to include them in the panel. b) Description of the valorisation plan Describe (max. 1200 words for large projects, max. 800 words for small projects) how you will realise the valorisation. With this you should take into account the assessment criteria (Call, Section 4.3.2). You should in any case state the following: - how the collaboration is given shape; - how the panel's contribution will be used to draw up the application and how the panel will be involved in the research; - a motivation about why the users and target groups included are right for achieving the goals set; - the contribution of the research to the top sector chosen and the societal needs that emerge from the MVI research agenda, the solutions offered for the problems from the MVI agenda and the timeframe in which these can be expected, and the concrete knowledge instruments and other instruments provided for potential knowledge users. c) Valorisation timetable Specify and phase the valorisation work plan for the intended duration in a clear schedule with time planning. In the table you should also include an overview of all of the intended meetings and activities from the valorisation plan. d) Planned valorisation deliverables State which concrete valorisation results are intended and describe the form these results will assume (publication, policy report, conference, App, Game, design criteria, etc. etc.). 16. Brief curriculum vitae of the principal applicant and the co-applicant(s) On no more than one page (in total), provide a concise, therefore not exhaustive, curriculum vitae for both the main applicant and any co-applicants. You should limit this to the items that are important for assessing this application. This could be relevant academic and non-academic matters. In the table, state a selection of at most five (top) publications from the main applicant and three (top) publications from the co-applicants. 17. Summary for laymen You are requested to produce a summary for laymen that is specifically intended for policy makers and interested persons from the top sectors. This concerns a text in Dutch of at most 400 words. The text briefly describes the key research problem of the project, the approach chosen and the intended results. 18a & 18b. Public summary and title In a maximum of 50 words, write both a Dutch (18a) and an English (18b) public summary of your project. This text is intended for a wider public. Give the summary a catchy Dutch and English title. This public summary can be used by NWO for publicity purposes. 6

BEGIN ON A NEW PAGE 19. Research ethics State whether your research contains elements for which the realisation is ethically sensitive (for example, with respect to the privacy of persons, the storage of data, the involvement of patients). If that is the case then state which elements in your research these are and how these sensitivities will be addressed. If there is or might be a requirement for an ethical review then you should state this as well. 20. Previous and future submissions If you have previously submitted your proposal in a similar form to NWO or another Dutch of foreign research funding body then you must state that here. You should also state the NWO division concerned and/or programme concerned, the year of submission and the file number (if known). Furthermore, if you are going to submit the current application elsewhere while it is being considered in the context of this programme, then you must also state this. State the date on which you expect a final decision and from which organisation. Scientific Integrity By submitting this document the applicant declares that he/she complies with nationally and internationally accepted standards for scientific conduct as stated in the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Scientific Practice 2012 (Association of Universities in the Netherlands, VSNU). 7

START ON A NEW PAGE 21. Research budget Information about the budget template (Excel document) will become available in July 2017. 8
