The Careers Strategy: an update Will Morlidge Careers and Enterprise Company March 2018

The case for employer engagement in schools 2x Young people more likely to be unemployed than the average Less likely to be NEET and earn 18% more after 4 or more encounters Only happening in 40% of schools

What we offer Build nationwide network of coordination Connecting schools and colleges with employers through our Enterprise Adviser Network Back proven ideas Funding activities in areas where support is needed most Find out what works Drawing on what works and focusing on geographical areas of need

Our collective impact to date 50% 3 increase in employer encounters among our schools and colleges new employers on average now working with our schools and colleges 80% of EAs have had a good experience 380,000 young people activities through our funds 75% in Cold Spots

Our collective impact in the West of England 47 schools and colleges engaged in the Network 45 Enterprise Advisers matched to schools 5 programmes funded: World Skills, Founders 4 Schools, Into University, Mentoring Plus, Envision

And people like it Enterprise Advisers Schools and colleges I d strongly commend others to become EAs. I ve found it really rewarding to play this part in my community, supporting my local high school and helping open young people s eyes to role models, technologies and enterprises which inspire. Enterprise Adviser, Oxfordshire Our Enterprise Coordinator was very dynamic and got the relevant people around the table. It was because of her drive that it s been effective and moved forward so well Academy Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnerships This is the best careers programme I have ever seen implemented We have had fantastic feedback from employers and & already about impact Enthusiasm of EAs and schools is great. It s been described as a dynamite moment when they meet Range of LEPs

Deep dive: Our Unexpected Mentor Campaign has driven significant engagement and sign up

Careers Strategy: strategic goals All schools to begin working toward the eight Gatsby Benchmarks, meeting them by the end of 2020. All schools to have a named Careers Leader in place by September 2018. Training to be made available for at least 500 Careers Leaders. Schools and colleges should offer every young person in years 7 13 at least one encounter a year by 2020. Schools and colleges to have access to an Enterprise Adviser by the end of 2020. All schools should have in place a link governor for careers

Key CEC work streams that flow from the Careers Strategy 1. Roll out 2. Scale up 3. Test and evaluate Employer engagement Give all schools and colleges access to an Enterprise Adviser Launch a new fund to support employer encounters Triple the number of cornerstone employers committing to work with schools and colleges across the country, including Opportunity Areas, to 150 Gatsby Benchmarks and Careers Leaders Scale up the North East Gatsby pilot through 20 career hubs following evidence-based practice. To include: - A Lead Gatsby Coordinator - Careers Leaders (with bursaries available for some schools) - Additional funding for careers activities Provide tools and resources to help all schools and colleges meet the Gatsby Benchmarks New approaches Test and evaluate, new approaches to: - understand what careers activities work well in primary schools - encourage young people, especially girls, to consider jobs in STEM - improve careers information, advice and guidance for young people with SEND Launch a new fund to support innovative approaches to personal guidance Underpinned by a digital offering including, Compass, Tracker and a new Provider and Resource Directory

The Gatsby Benchmarks provide a blueprint 1. Encounters with employers, with workplaces, with further and higher education 2. Information about local jobs, how the curriculum connects to work 3. A plan tailored to an individual s needs and supported by guidance - Sir John Holman The 8 Gatsby Benchmarks 1 A stable careers programme 2 Learning from career and labour market information 3 Addressing the needs of each pupil 4 Linking curriculum learning to careers 5 Encounters with employers and employees 6 Experiences of workplaces 7 Encounters with further and higher education 8 Personal guidance

Our State of the Nation 2017 report shows the challenge 1. Encounters 2. Information 3. A plan 4. Stable programme `

Although there is also reason for cautious optimism 35% 30% 25% 20% 31% 21% Fall of 10% ppts in schools hitting No benchmarks Increase of 10 ppts in schools hitting HALF the benchmarks 15% 10% 5% 6% 16% Emergence of schools hitting ALL the benchmarks 4% 0% Schools hitting NO benchmarks Schools hitting HALF the benchmarks 0% Schools hitting MOST of the benchmarks 2014 (original Gatsby survey) 2017 (Compass audit tool)

Improvement across the Gatsby benchmarks is achievable:

Careers Hubs Our proposals: 20 x careers hubs will be funded and supported by additional coordinators. The hubs will link together schools, colleges, universities and other local organisations. 5M will be invested to support these areas. CEC will be running the process to support implementation of the hubs with an intent for them to be operational from autumn 2018.

Careers Leaders Our proposals: 4M will be made available to fund training for Careers Leaders in at least 500 schools and colleges. Expectation that Careers Hubs will have access to some but not all of the Careers Leader bursaries Training providers and training bursaries to be operational in autumn 2018.

Fund for disadvantaged young people Our proposals: The Careers and Enterprise Company will launch a new investment fund of 5M to support the most disadvantaged pupils, half of which will focus on ensuring high quality careers guidance is available The fund will be launched by the end of September 2018. Schools will be able to use virtual wallets to access funds.

Other Initiatives STEM CEC will work with LEPs to help Enterprise Coordinators in areas with low STEM qualification uptake to build STEM encounters into careers and enterprise plans. SEND CEC will undertake targeted work with employers to stimulate more employer engagement to support children with special educational needs and disabilities. Primary schools 2M will be provided to test what careers activities are appropriate and work in primary schools. Digital Tools to support schools to evaluate their provision and monitor progress.
