Connecticut Invention Convention 2017-18 Partnership Opportunities

Inspiring Tomorrow s Inventors and Innovators A Case for Supporting the Connecticut Invention Convention The Connecticut Invention Convention (CIC) is entering its 35 th year of fostering student interest in STEM. The program serves students in grades K-8, inspiring them through invention, building creative problem solving skills, and giving them the confidence to pursue careers in engineering, innovation and entrepreneurship. CIC is the longest continuously operating educational program for student inventors in the United States. The program consists of a strong, multi-level academic curriculum which is taught in classrooms, after school and enrichment settings in 250 public and private schools across Connecticut.

Their Stories Are Our Stories Nolan Pimentel, a first time inventor from Waterbury s Wallace Middle School, wanted to help solve arthritis in his grandmother s hands through exercise. His solution was a glove with weights at the end of the fingers. Nolan is pictured here with his mother, and his prototype. Mallory Kievman invented Hiccupops a neutraceutical designed to stop hiccups in patients who suffer hiccups during cancer therapy, as her Invention Convention project when she was 14. Now she has her own company! Zoe Eggleston participated in the Invention Convention in 2009 as an 8 th grade student, with her invention to measure the thickness of ice. In 2012, Zoe was granted a patent, as well as a scholarship to study mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Connecticut Invention Convention at a Glance Over 17,000 K-8 students are involved in the CIC school-based programs annually Students compete in their schools and winners present their inventions to industry professionals first at the regional level and then the state convention in April More than 300,000 student inventors have participated in CIC programs in the past 34 years On average, CIC inventors are 50% female and 25% minority students, making this one of the country s most diverse STEM programs Each year, several of the top performing students pursue patents for their products and learn how to take them to market

Measurable Results In mid-2011, in conjunction with the University of Connecticut School of Business, over 1,200 CIC student participants were preand post-tested. Results demonstrate that CIC programs have a measurable effect on students in beneficial ways such as generating ideas, developing problem solving skills, understanding the engineering process and even considering additional STEM coursework in high school. Teachers reported a profound change in the overall problemsolving behavior of students, as children learn to test out hypotheses, take ownership of their creative ideas, and learn to do hard things.

New in 2017 The Connecticut Invention Convention is looking toward the future and identifying ways that we can have an even greater impact on education in Connecticut. This includes: Expanded professional development opportunities for educators Invention programs for high-school students Opportunities for students to learn and participate online Enhancements to our industry-leading curriculum Greater participation year-round by our industry partners and supporters

Sponsorship of the Connecticut Invention Convention CIC provides schools with professional development, curriculum, support and an infrastructure for students to present their work and compete for awards. In order to ensure that the program is as accessible as possible, the registration fees charged to schools and students are very low, covering only 15% of our annual expenses. We rely primarily on corporate support to ensure that the Connecticut Invention Convention can continue to serve students each year. In addition to helping so many students gain valuable skills, our sponsors also receive significant recognition and visibility at our events and throughout the year.

2017-18 New Sponsorship Opportunities New Sponsorship Opportunity: High School Pilot Program For 34 years the Connecticut invention Convention has been focusing on elementary and middle school students, because we understand the importance of catching students early to inspire them towards STEM careers. But we also understand that many students who graduate from our program in 8 th grade have a strong desire to continue their work in invention, problem solving and entrepreneurship. Beginning with a kick-off in October, this pilot will include a year-round effort to recruit and engage high school students, providing opportunities for them to create, problem-solve and compete. Inventathons and online challenges will provide opportunities for all levels of experience. Please contact Ron Katz for more details and sponsorship cost.

2017-18 New Sponsorship Opportunities New Sponsorship Opportunity: Educator Professional Development Program This school year the Connecticut Invention Convention will be providing 8 professional development sessions for educators from across the state. We expect to reach 150 160 teachers and STEM educators through these programs, which will cover everything from basic level invention education to integration with the Next Generation Science Standards. In addition, over the course of the year we will be offering additional web-based programming (live and video) to cover specific topics. We will also be videotaping the live programs for use in the development of a full online professional development series, enabling teachers to learn on their own schedule. Please contact Ron Katz for more details and sponsorship cost.

2017-18 New Sponsorship Opportunities New Sponsorship Opportunity: Inventor s Log Book Every student participating in the Connecticut Invention Convention is required to complete an Inventor s Log Book. This document details the inventor s progress, telling their story and ensuring that they are truly understanding the problem solving process. Many industry professionals, including the US Patent & Trade Office, have commented on the quality and inclusiveness of our Log Book and its value in the invention process. We encourage an engineering firm, or any company that understands how inventing is a process needing to be documented, to sponsor the 2017-18 Inventor s Log Book, entitling the sponsor to include their logo and even a short message to the inventors. You can see the current Log Book on our website at: CIC Logbook. Please contact Ron Katz for more details and sponsorship cost.

2017-18 New Sponsorship Opportunities New Sponsorship Opportunity: Teacher Appreciation Teachers are the cornerstone of the Connecticut Invention Convention without their efforts we could not succeed. Many teachers choose to participate in the program with their classes even though it takes additional time for which they are not compensated. This year we will be holding a teacher appreciation luncheon which will be both a thank you and also an educational opportunity, with a speaker who can demonstrate the importance of invention education. We seek a sponsor for this event who recognizes, as we do, the value of great teachers. Please contact Ron Katz for more details and sponsorship cost.

2017-18 Funding Needs The Connecticut Invention Convention also has specific needs this year for which we are seeking funding. Any of these items may be funded as a grant or as part of a sponsorship package. Website design and development Curriculum development and NGSS alignment Student travel to National Invention Convention in June Gifts for teacher appreciation
