Army Judge Advocates Women s and Spouse s Club of Washington D.C. 2015-2016 Welcome to the 2015-2016 Scholarship Program of the AJAWSC. As part of our community outreach program we will be awarding scholarships to graduating high school seniors, continuing college students, and non-military dependent spouses. We encourage all eligible students and spouses to apply. All applications must be postmarked no later than 15 March 2016. Applications and additional information may be obtained from the AJAWSC Facebook page or the JAGWIRE. Please read all guidelines, policies, and requirements before applying and use the provided checklist to guide you through the application process. Type or print legibly when filling out the application form. Be sure to provide all information requested and appropriate signatures. Part II: Have current school counselor record your cumulative GPA, ACT and/or SAT scores. List colleges to which you have applied and intended major. Part III: Extracurricular Activities. Using the form provided, list all extracurricular activities in which you have participated. These may include, but are not limited to, sports, band, theater, school clubs, after school programs, etc. Part IV: Service Activities/ Citizenship. Using the form provided, list all service activities/citizenship activities in which you have participated. These may include, but are not limited to, scouts, faith-related activities, community volunteer, and /or paid employment. Part V: Personal Essay. Please answer the essay questions to the best of your ability. Part VI: Letters of Recommendation. Please include at least two letters of recommendation from people other than relatives. The letters must be included with the application in a sealed envelope marked with Part VI and must include a telephone number and address where the person who wrote the letter can be reached. The AJAWSC will award at least three academic scholarships, at least one in each category, of equal value, to qualified applicants in each of the following categories: a. Category I: Eligible college-bound high school senior b. Category II: Eligible continuing college student c. Category III: Eligible non-military spouse continuing education 2. The scholarship awards shall be based upon the following criteria: scholastic ability, extracurricular activities, service activities/citizenship, character references, and personal essay. Financial need is not considered. 3. The selection committee will be comprised of AJAWSC members. 4. The AJAWSC Treasurer shall issue a check in the full amount of the scholarship payable to the recipient. 5. Eligibility is restricted to members of AJAWSC and/or their dependents. Eligible member must have joined the club by 1 January 2016. 6. An event will be planned in honor of the recipients for the purpose of presenting the awards. PROCEDURES: 1. Applicants must submit the following materials to the committee: completed legible application form; GPA verified by school counselor; standardized test scores; list of awards and honors; description of community activities; description of extracurricular activities; at least two letters of recommendation from people other than relatives; personal essay of not more than 400 words. 2. The AJAWSC Scholarship Committee will meet as needed in support of the scholarship program. 3. Incomplete or inaccurate applications will not be considered. All submitted materials will become the sole property of the AJAWSC and will be retained for one full year from the date of selection. At the end of the year, all applications and supporting documents will be destroyed.
