This past month one of our Epsilon Theta Alumni suffered the ultimate loss. Evan Keyser's mother pasted away after a long, strong battle against cancer. For Evan, his brother Ryan and Father, everyday will now have a different meaning. For those of us who have enjoyed to opportunity to befriend him, we can only do our best to try to understand what the family is going through. In March, a few alumni took time to visit Evan and spent time with our friend and fraternity brother. Scott "Droopy" Freedman, Eric McCormick, Matthew Modansky and Dan Schulman all got together in Baltimore for the weekend. In times of hardship, it are these bonds of brotherhood that show their true meaning. Five years ago, we all just had this crazy idea to start a fraternity chapter at West Virginia University. Today we have shown that we are more than just brothers, we are great friends to one another. In response to the passing of Evan's mother, the alumni have decided to create and endow a scholarship through the Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation. The Keyser Family Cancer Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Sigma Alpha Mu member in his undergraduate or graduate studies program that has lost a family member to cancer. For some recipients, the scholarship will just be a symbol of understanding, and all students to know that others have felt there loss. For some students receiving this award, it will be huge because their family has had to pay for certain treatments putting the fraternity dues on the back burner. In either case, this is our way of making sure we don't forget about the meaningful presence Evan's mom had in his life and the reciprocal meaning of Fraternity to each and everyone of us. Before this scholarship can be awarded, we must raise $20,000. Our goal is to have this money with-in 5 years if not sooner. At this time, if you are interested in making a gift to this scholarship, please contact Evan himself or Aaron Girson at the SAM Foundation office. Gifts could be made all at once or you may make a pledge over a period of time. This will be a gift that keeps on giving and one that all of us can be a part.
Page 2 Winter Issue 2009 Volum e 1, Issue 1 Epsilon Theta Formal Remember the good old days of being an undergraduate? Remember our first formal at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh? Well this year the undergraduate chapter has decided to have the 2010 Formal at the Nemicolan Woodlands Resort. The beautiful resort property is host to many prominent events over the course of the year including a PGA Tour event every season. There are plenty of activities to take in from golf, to quading and off roading, to skeet shooting and for the girlfriends (and wives) there are massages. Before you leave make sure to check out the animals on exhibit at the property's very own zoo. The dates of the Formal are Saturday April 17, to Sunday April 18. There will be a banquet dinner that Saturday evening (and yes the DJ should show up this year). Alumni will be staying in townhouses, complete with a Master King Bedroom, and Queen Bedroom and a queen pull out sofa, full kitchen and laundry included. The undergraduates will be staying in one of the resort's mansions. Besides sleeping almost the entire brotherhood, make sure to take time and go play pool or sit down at a poker game happening in the basement. If that is not your scene, try one of the two hot tubs. Frank Annie is in charge and any alumni planning on attending should contact him for more information and prices. Sigma Alpha Mu Convention Miami has been host to Super Bowls, Hurricanes, College Bowl Games, Spring Breakers, Grand Theft Auto and Movies. Now you can add Sigma Alpha Mu's National Convention to the list. On August 6th, the 2010 National Convention is set to kick off. The weekend program will be full of undergraduate programs and alumni specific events are set for Saturday. Evan Keyser and Dan Schulman would be attending their 6th August Convention. Adam Horn and Matthew Modansky would be making their 4th visit to the annual event. Who will join them this year? As you will see in the next Octagonian, there will be an Alumni Day in Miami, a convention feature that began four years ago in Phoenix. The daytime activity will begin in the morning and conclude with the closing Banquet. Ll day there are to be opportunities for alumni to meet other alumni from one s own chapter plus alumni from other chapters and areas and vintages. Alumni, ofcourse are invited to business sessions where they may participate and vote. Plans are being made for an alumni golf outing the morning of Alumni Day. The Doral A Marriott Hotel is 15 minutes from Miami International Airport and 30 minutes from Miami s South Beach. You can also call Phyllis at Sigma Alpha Mu Head Quarters (317-846- 0600) for details and rates. Winter Issue 2009 Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 3 Greeting Alumni of Sigma Alpha Mu-Epsilon Theta, We would like to welcome you to our wonderful world of monthly alumni newsletters. Included in these newsletters will be updates as to what activities the chapter is participating in, as well future planned events. Epsilon Theta has been off to a booming start in this spring 2010 semester. We currently have six pledges, who all are great guys. Saturday, March 6th we hosted our big brother night. It is short notice but all alumni are welcome to attend. Once the Bigs have been assigned we will inform the alumni as to who is a new member within the family. So far this semester our chapter has had three socials with more planned in the coming weeks. Our finances appear to be in order and guys are very excited about the future. For the big east tournament, a small number of brothers traveled to New York. Those who attended were excited to see the Mountaineers take home the Championship for the first time in school history. As for athletics we have not been so hot. In our intramural basketball league we are currently defeated at 0-5. It appears that star point guard Seth Eisenstat has been having a down year. Red shirt sophomore, Bradley Raxenberg states Our team is not focused, but we are excited for the future. He continues, I have been pleased with the performance of Redshirt Freshman, Max Chernoff, although I can not differentiate if people say Maxy or Raxy from the sideline. Senior forward, Zack the franchise Gottfried, Guard Jay Levine, and Center Big Will Stonelake, will be making their last appearance as a Sammy as they will be graduating later this semester. With regards to senior day, Gottfried states, It is an honor to wear the purple and white and we need to win bad.
