UMMC World Pharmacists Day 2014 Report Introduction What is World Pharmacists Day? - World Pharmacists Day is held as to promote the world recognition towards pharmacists as professional healthcare providers - Medicines major issue in most parts of the world - 2012: study USD 500 mil could be saved every year if responsible use of medicines was achieved - 2013: 13% of worldwide visits at community pharmacies consists of consultation sessions alone (seeking advice only) - Pharmacists a strong & under-utilized asset to achieve this goal - Pharmacists the most accessible & trusted healthcare professionals - Medicines + expertise (i.e PHARMACISTS) = BEST ACCESS TO BETTER HEALTH OUTCOME History of World Pharmacists Day and past years themes - 2009: FIP (International Pharmaceutical Federation) council meeting in Istanbul, Turkey. From the council meeting, decision was made to organize World Pharmacists Day every 25 th September of the year - 2010: Safety first with medicine, ask your pharmacist - 2011: I am your most accessible healthcare provider; I am a driving force behind discovering new medicines; I am the key that unlocks all you need to know about your medicines; I am with you in sickness and health - 2012: I am with you in sickness and health - 2013: Pharmacists: Simplifying your medicines use, no matter how complex - 2014: Assess to pharmacists is access to health

FIP (International Pharmaceutical Federation) - Founded in 1912 - A global federation of national associations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists - Official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) - 126 member organizations - ~ 3 million pharmacy practitioners & scientists across the globe - 100 years cornerstone Changes in pharmacy Emergence in pharmacy practice Advocates on behalf of the role of pharmacist (healthcare), maintaining cores (pharmaceutical sciences) Significance of World Pharmacists Day towards the UMMC pharmacists profession - Pharmacists are recognized as prominent members of the healthcare professional team along with the doctors, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals in curative, preventive and rehabilitative aspects. - The pharmacists role in the healthcare team was empowered when Heplar and Strand defined the concept of clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical care in the late 1980s. - Transformation in UMMC: 1996 revamped pharmacists roles in healthcare. The productoriented services have been since then transformed into patient-oriented services. - Innovative and patient-oriented services have begun in UMMC. Sterile complex was built to conduct aseptic dispensing: parenteral solutions and cytotoxic drug reconstitution. Improved with the high-tech use of BAXA Compounder MM24 and the upcoming robotic arm in the near future. - 2000: the whole pharmacy activities (logistics, manufacturing, inpatient, and outpatient) have been integrated into a computerized system to enhance the services. - Highly innovative services introduced in UMMC to aim for sustainability of patient health outcomes. PharmUMMC (dispensing special formulary drugs and non-drug items), and PharmCARE (value added services for chronic patients through the appointment counter services, drive-thru and BYPOST).

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination awareness booth In conjunction to the World Pharmacists Day and with the support of Merck Sharp Dohme (MSD) Malaysia, special one-day discount was offered to all walks of life. HPV vaccine was priced at RM250 for 3 doses (normal price RM600) for UMMC staffs and UM students. Health Screening Booth - Pharmacists provided health screening during the event. The health screening conducted includes measurement of height and weight, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose test and bone mineral density. It was a good collaboration between pharmacists and pharmacy students as both parties were involved in the health screening booths. - - Pharmacists aiding participants of the health screening to fill up their details in the health screening form. - Participants proceed to various stations of the health screening booth with the picture showing a participate having her blood pressure measured (left) and body weight and height (right)

- Participants having their weight and height measured as well as their blood glucose checked by pharmacy students.

- Lastly, participants had their health screening results interpreted by pharmacists and counseling provided by pharmacists as well. -

- Bone mineral density test provided by personnel from Takeda. - - A total of 123 participants took part in our health screening booth. They had an average age of 52 years old with an average BMI of 25.85. The following charts explain the demographics of the patients involved:

Body Mass Index (BMI) of Health Screening Participants. - According to the Clinical Practice Guidelines on Management of Obesity, 35% of the participants were in the pre-obese category with a BMI of 23 27.4; whereas 37% of the participants were obese.

Blood Pressure of Health Screening Participants. - Among the 123 participants, 44% of the participants screened fell into the pre-hypertension category, whereas 18% of the participants had blood pressure more than 140/90 mmhg. - Fasting Blood Sugar 33% 67% Normal 4.4-6.1 High - - Chart 4. Fasting Blood Sugar of Health Screening Participants. - 67% of the participants had fasting blood sugar within the normal range (4.4 6.1 mmol/l) whereas 33 % of the participants had high blood sugar level.
