FOREWORD Connecting minds, shaping the future energy system In 2014, we entered the first year of the biggest ever EU research and innovation programme Horizon 2020. In order to stay at the forefront of knowledge, DHC+ focused on exploring opportunities under this multiannual financial framework and helping its members navigate through it. At the same time, the Platform continued promoting the integration of renewable sources in District Heating and Cooling by means of the EU-funded projects such as SUNSTORE4, SDHplus, BiogasHeat and RESCUE. It also started executing its own ambitious project STRATEGO, helping national and local authorities in the implementation of the Energy Efficiency Directive. Our Education & Training initiatives, especially the Summer School and the Student Awards, as well as our social media channels, acquired even more participants, supporters and followers. Through its publications, cross-sectorial cooperation and participation in a series of international conferences, DHC+ strengthened its profile of a leading Technology Platform connecting minds, shaping the future energy system! Enjoy the reading of our Highlights 2014! Best wishes, Yves Delaby Chairman of the DHC+ Technology Platform DHC+ HIGHLIGHTS 2014 3

HORIZON 2020 Turning good ideas into innovation On 11 December 2013, the European Commission launched the first call for proposals under the new EU Research and Innovation Framework Programme Horizon 2020. This financial instrument brings together previously separate sources of EU funding and identifies research priorities for the upcoming seven years. Given its potential to help Europe achieve its climate and energy ambitions, DHC can and should benefit from a share of this funding. In order to help our members navigate through the first call for proposals, the DHC+ Secretariat prepared a summary of topics under H2020 which can be of interest for the DHC sector. The summary table can be found on the DHC+ website www.dhcplus.eu In addition, the Secretariat attended a series of Horizon 2020 Information Days to be able to provide first hand information to DHC+ members and continue to guide them through numerous EU funding opportunities in the years to come. Let s take the challenge of Horizon 2020 up together! DHC+ HIGHLIGHTS 2014 5

CONNECTING RES TO DHC DHC+ driving the energy transition Climate change and global challenges force societies and their policymakers to think out of the box while utilising existing resources, deploying available technologies and adapting them to new challenges. With its numerous projects, DHC+ actively contributes to these efforts. With its BiogasHeat project, the Platform supports the development of heat utilisation strategies for exisiting heat resources, increasing efficiency and use of renewable energy while decreasing import dependency. During 2014, partners published the overall conclusion of their work which can be found at www.biogasheat.org DHC+ also aims at the integration of existing technologies, e.g. by utilising the vast potential of solar energy in DHC. In 2014, the DHC+ Technology Platform developed a market strategy for solar district energy in the framework of the SDHplus project (www.solardistrictheating.com). It also continued to disseminate the final results of the concluded project SUNSTORE4 (www. sunstore4.eu). Often overlooked in favour of heating, cooling is becoming more and more important across Europe. With its RESCUE project, DHC+ helps adapting the District Heating experience to the challenge of rising cooling demands (www.rescue-project.eu). DHC+ HIGHLIGHTS 2014 7

STRATEGO A forward looking strategic planning Connecting domestic heating and cooling resources with local needs? Connecting European and national objectives with local potential? Connecting European cities & regions and fostering transfer of know-how? This is what the DHC+ Technology Platform and its partners are doing under the STRATEGO project. STRATEGO will support national authorities in developing enhanced National Heating and Cooling Plans. It has already set the ground for a European Thermal Atlas and it will trigger concrete projects on the ground. A successful first set of coaching sessions matching learning cities and regions with experienced ones took place and two more are to follow. If you represent a national / local authority or a utility, or if you are a policy-maker or an urban planner, check your dedicated pages on the project website www.stratego-project.eu. You can also browse our online agenda for past and upcoming events related to heating and cooling and follow us on Twitter to have access to the latest project developments @STRATEGOproject. Co-funded by the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme of the European Union DHC+ HIGHLIGHTS 2014 9

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER Education & Training in DHC sees growing popularity! In its 2014 SET PLAN Education & Training Roadmap, the European Commission recognised the importance of DHC initiatives, such as a Master on District Heating and Cooling and a network of academic and industrial stakeholders in the sector. More importantly, in its Action 1.1.13, the roadmap emphasises that the Heating and Cooling, Heat Utilisation and Thermal Networks programmes should be developed in cooperation with the Renewable Heating and Cooling European Technology Platform and the DHC+ Technology Platform. This proves that DHC+ is on the right track with its Education & Training activities. Following the initial success, the Platform welcomed applications for the 2 nd International DHC+ Student Awards. The second edition saw a positive development in terms of quantity and geographical distribution of the applications submitted. In good tradition, this year s research papers came from all over Europe! The same can be said about the participants of the 2 nd International DHC+ Summer School. 29 students and young professionals gathered in the Finnish capital to learn about District Heating and Cooling, to exchange views, to apply their knowledge and visit various sites important to DHC in the country. For more information on what is coming in 2015 check http://studentawards.dhcplus.eu/ and http://summerschool.dhcplus.eu/ DHC+ HIGHLIGHTS 2014 11

ON PAPER AND ONLINE Giving shape to ideas and news To ensure that the ideas of our members are not lost in numerous emails and minutes, we publish the best and brightest of them in the form of reader-friendly brochures. This is the case with the publication Warmth from Waste: A Win-Win Synergy, which has grown from an idea to a joint initiative of three European associations. The paper provides the foundation for the development of projects on District Energy from Waste and can be downloaded from our website: www.dhcplus.eu News related to DHC+ activities regularly appear in the International EuroHeat&Power Magazine. Our members and a wider stakeholder community receive the printed DHC+ Newsletter twice a year, whereas DHC+ followers get daily updates on DHC-related news, research programmes and events via our Twitter account @DHCPlus. Students and young professionals can find information regarding Education & Training activities on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/dhcplus. Share your ideas and news with us! Contact the Secretariat at dhcplus@euroheat.org or find us on social media. DHC+ HIGHLIGHTS 2014 13

TEAMING UP DHC+ connecting with like-minded players As stakeholders team up within DHC+ to face the challenges of the future, DHC+ itself joins forces with other players to reach its goals. Also in 2014 DHC+ closely worked with complementary organisations, such as the International Energy Agency or the Renewable Heating and Cooling Platform (RHC-TP). For this last, the DHC+ Technology Platform actively engaged in providing inputs and contributed in putting forward ideas for the future organisation of the RHC-TP. Following last year s forward-looking decision, the Platform has supported the work of Knowledge4Innovation, amongst other activities by its involvement in the European Innovation Summit 2014. In 2015, DHC+ will continue to extend its network and to seek cooperation with like-minded stakeholders. DHC+ HIGHLIGHTS 2014 15

MULTIPLE EVENTS SCENARIO Speaking up for DHC Research & Innovation In 2014, DHC+ took the opportunity of several events to spread the word, such as the EU Sustainable Energy Week, the European Bioenergy Conference, the European Week of Regions and Cities, etc. Among others, DHC+ participated in the 14 th International Symposium on District Heating and Cooling with two parallel sessions on Bringing research into practice. These project sessions brought together a large community of District Heating researchers and professionals for a lively exchange of information and views on the results of EU-funded projects. The presentations confirmed the fact that cities play a key role in the energy transformation, not only as followers but also as leaders. The DHC+ team was also actively involved in the third party events, such as the GeoDH panel debate, the Waste-to-Energy Congress, the International Workshop Heat and the City in Edinburgh, the Norwegian District Heating Days and the European Innovation Summit. The Platform has slowly but surely increased visibility as a central entity focusing on DHC Research & Innovation in the European arena. DHC+ HIGHLIGHTS 2014 17

DHC+ WORKING GROUPS Connecting the present with the future Building on the existing, putting forward new ideas and being one step ahead: these are les raisons d être of the DHC+ Technology Platform. In order to prepare the sector to future changes, several working groups were created. The CEN Workshop on Eco-efficient substations continues its work on defining requirements for future substations in order to ensure their efficiency and flexibility with regard to the development of low temperature networks. It shall finalise its work in 2015. The Smart Cities Working Group, established in 2014, started to map different initiatives at EU level and is reflecting on how DHC should evolve to be the backbone of future smart cities.
