CEU Basics WHAT IS A CEU? GUIDELINES & FAQs CEU stands for Continuing Education Unit, a standard measurement many schools and certification programs use to encourage and track ongoing learning after graduation. Continuing education is a critical part of maintaining your NTP or NTC credential, ensuring that you continue to expand your knowledge, refine your skillset, and grow your business. It reflects the integrity of you, the NTA, and the credential. In general, the NTA awards 1 CEU for every 1 hour of education attended. HOW MANY CEUS DO I NEED? To maintain an active Graduate Membership (and the ability to use the NTP or NTC credential), NTA graduates are required to obtain 24 CEUs every 2 years starting from the date of graduation. If, for example, you graduated in June 2015, you will need to earn 24 CEUs by the time your membership renewal comes due on July 31, 2017. WHAT IS THE ACCEPTABLE DATE RANGE FOR CEUS? To qualify, CEUs must have been earned within 30 months of one s membership renewal date. For example, if you are renewing in July 2017, you can use CEUs you have obtained from January 2015 forward. DO CEUS ROLL OVER TO THE NEXT RENEWAL PERIOD? Yes, if you earn more than the minimum 24 CEUs, you can roll some over into the next 2-year membership period. However, the date range above still applies (i.e. the CEUs must still be earned no more than 30 months prior to recertification) and we cannot split a single event (see next question). CAN CEUS BE SPLIT BETWEEN CERTIFICATION PERIODS? No, CEUs from a single course cannot be split into two certification periods. For example, if you receive a Certificate of Completion for 30 CEUs, you cannot use 24 for the next renewal, and roll over 6 to the following certification period. All 30 will be applied to the current renewal. HOW CAN I RENEW MY CERTIFICATE IF I MISSED MY RENEWAL DEADLINE? If you are late sending in your Certificate Renewal, there will be a $25 late fee applied. Nutritional Therapy Association, Inc. 2

HOW CAN I RENEW MY CERTIFICATE IF I VE LET IT LAPSE BEYOND ONE RENEWAL CYCLE? If it has been 2 or more renewal cycles since you had active membership, you are required to re-sit an examination, pay the $199 for membership and the $25 late fee, and submit 24 CEUs from the last 30 months. If this is the case and you would like to renew, please email nta@nutritionaltherapy.com for instructions. HOW MANY CEUS MUST BE RELATED TO HEALTH AND BUSINESS? 14+ Health-Related CEUs Of the 24 required CEUs, at least 14 must come from health-related courses, webinars, books, etc. Some examples include: Nutritional therapy, functional nutrition, etc. Cooking, food preparation, sourcing, etc. Supplementation, herbs, detoxification, aromatherapy, etc. Anatomy and physiology Applied kinesiology CEUs required to maintain licensure for other modalities (e.g. LMT, LAc, RN, DC, etc.) Other wellness or lifestyle certifications (yoga, personal training, iridology) 10 Business-Related CEUs Business-related CEUs can make up 10 or fewer of the 24 total CEUs. These CEUs are especially important for NTPs and NTCs who maintain a private practice or run their own business. If you do not maintain a practice or run your own business, you can instead get all 24 CEUs from health-related education. Business-related CEUs can come from a variety of sources. Suggested topics include: Business software, website design, etc. Counseling, psychology, motivational interviewing, habit-formation, etc. Marketing (e.g. social media, email marketing, content marketing, etc.) Productivity, project management, time management, etc. Small business administration (e.g. accounting, insurance, taxes, website design, etc.) WHAT DOCUMENTATION AM I REQUIRED TO SUBMIT? To count as valid CEUs, you must submit one of the following for each course, webinar, etc.: Option 1: A Certificate of Completion, including the total awarded CEUs/credits (or the hours attended; 1 hour = 1 CEU), the presenter name, date, time, location, and topic. Option 2: If an official certificate is not provided, you must submit an NTA CEU Report (found at the end of this document) and a copy of your receipt (if applicable). Please note that one CEU Report per speaker is needed for multi-speaker events. Nutritional Therapy Association, Inc. 3

Please note that the NTA does not accept any of the following as proof of CEUs: Photos of Certificates of Completion or NTA CEU Reports. You must scan and email the document, fax it, or send a photocopy in the mail. Links to Certificates of Completion or NTA CEU Reports stored online in Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. WHER E DO I SEND MY CEU DOCUMENTATION? You can send your Certificates of Completion and NTA CEU Reports when you have all 24 and your renewal applicaiton to NTA headquarters via email, fax, or post. Please do not send originals. Email: Fax: Post: nta@nutritionaltherapy.com (360) 528-2564 PO Box 354, Olympia, WA 98507 Nutritional Therapy Association, Inc. 4

Approved Ways to Earn CEUs While there are a wide variety of ways to earn CEUs, the NTA maintains the right to determine whether or not a source is high quality and if the education received meets our standards for continuing education. By completing one of the programs the NTA has evaluated and pre-approved for CEU credits, you can rest assured that your renewal will be processed successfully and immediately as we already know the caliber of learning you received from these programs. If you want to take advantage of this guaranteed renewal opportunity, you can participate in some of these pre-approved CEU activities. ATTEND THE NTA ANNUAL CONFERENCE Attending an NTA Annual Conference is a great way to earn a significant number of CEUs while reconnecting with the tribe and having a ridiculous amount of fun. While the exact number of CEUs varies from year to year depending on the number of speakers, length of presentations, etc., conference attendees typically receive a Certificate of Completion. Note that the NTA offers a discounted entrance fee to NTP/NTC students and graduates with active graduate memberships. Find out more about the next NTA Annual Conference ATTEND A REGIONAL NTA CONFERENCE In addition to the Annual Conference, the NTA holds regional conferences around the United States. After attending, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from the NTA. Find out more about Regional NTA Conferences PURCHASE NTA CONFERENCE RECORDINGS AND SUBMIT A CEU REPORT If you are unable to attend an NTA annual or regional conference in person, worry not: you can buy the recordings instead and submit an NTA CEU Report for each speaker session you watch. Buy NTA Conference Recordings COMPLETE A 3RD PARTY CERTIFICATION PROGRAM NTPs and NTCs can take a number of certification programs to complement their credential. Most of these courses will provide a Certificate of Completion, but if not, you must submit a copy of your receipt and complete an NTA CEU Report to receive CEUs. Please remember that you may only use up to 10 CEUs for business and up to 24 CEUs for nutrition per cycle, and that the remainder does not carry over to the next renewal cycle if extra CEUs are part of one event/course and/or don t fall within the 30-month window. Some pre-approved certification programs are listed below. Nutritional Therapy Association, Inc. 5

Each book review is eligible for 4 CEUs. You must send us a 500-750 word book review for each book discussing the following: Please summarize key takeaways from this book. How will you apply what you learned in your practice, business, or life? Nutritional Therapy Association, Inc. 6

An NTA CEU Report is not required for book reviews. See the list of Recommended Resources Nutritional Therapy Association, Inc. 7

Other Ways to Earn CEUs The NTA does not guarantee that CEUs will be awarded for programs outside of our pre-approved methods; however, we will evaluate all applications that are submitted. Applications submitted with CEUs from non-approved activities will take longer to process as we will examine the quality and applicability of each item to ensure it upholds the integrity of the NTA s certification standards. The NTA will exercise the right to deny any applications if the CEUs are not deemed appropriate for the renewal requirements and you will be asked to resubmit your application with other continuing education experiences. Possible CEU activities that fall outside of the pre-approved programs are listed below. ATTEND OTHER CONFERENCES Conferences that are nutrition-related or business-related may be eligible for CEUs. Please fill out a separate NTA CEU Report for each speaker; you cannot fill out one report for the whole conference. Some examples of nutrition and business conferences are listed below. Weston A. Price Foundation Wise Traditions Annual Conference National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP) Annual Conference Paleo f(x) World Domination Summit [Business] SXSW Conference [Business] ATTEND ONLINE SUMMITS & WEBINARS Many nutrition experts, supplement companies, etc. regularly offer online conferences, summits, and webinars that can be a great free way to earn CEUs from the comfort of your own home. Beware that such education is usually provided in an effort to sell you a product or paid course, however, so you will likely have to endure some promotions. Better companies and speakers will keep this to a minimum. Please note that you must either submit a Certificate of Completion or submit a copy of your receipt and complete NTA CEU Reports. Please fill out a separate NTA CEU Report for each speaker; you cannot fill out one report for the whole event. ATTEND AN IN- PERSON TRAINING OR SEMINAR In-person trainings, seminars, or workshops related to nutrition or business may be eligible for CEUs. As with online conferences, summits, or webinars, you will likely have to endure some promotions. Better companies and speakers will keep this to a minimum. Please note that you must either submit a Certificate of Completion or submit a copy of your receipt and complete an NTA CEU Reports. Please fill out a separate NTA CEU Report for each speaker; you cannot fill out one report for the whole event. Nutritional Therapy Association, Inc. 8

ATTEND COLLEGE CLASSES The NTA awards 1 CEU for each 1 seat hour of class. For example, if you take a 5-credit class that meets for 1 hour a day, 5 days a week, for 10 weeks, you would earn 50 CEUs (1 x 5 x 10 = 50). To receive CEUs for college classes, you must send a copy of your transcript. We may request a course syllabus or further information from you if we require it. TEACH A WORKSHOP If you teach a workshop or present on material that aligns with our paradigm and is above and beyond the NTA curriculum, you may be able to earn 4 CEUs per unique presentation. You must submit an outline or slide deck from the event, an NTA CEU Report, and a listing the resources that you consulted to research content (minimum of three quality resources). Please note that for NTA instructors, the time spent teaching NTP and NTC classes is not eligible for CEUs. WRITE A BOOK REVIEW (OTHER BOOKS) Any health or business-related book may be eligible for CEUs. Each book review is eligible for 4 CEUs. You must send us a 500-750 word book review for each book discussing the following: Please summarize key takeaways from this book. How will you apply what you learned in your practice, business, or life? An NTA CEU Report is not required for book reviews. WRITE A BOOK NTPs and NTCs can earn CEUs by writing a book on a health or business-related topic. The book can be a physical print book or ebook, but regardless of format, the book must be available for sale to the public to qualify for CEUs. You must fill out an NTA CEU Report and provide a listing resources you consulted while researching. CEUs are awarded as follows: 12 CEUs: books of 100-200 pages in length 24 CEUs: books longer than 200 pages in length Note that no CEUs are awarded for books shorter than 100 pages. You must send proof of the book (e.g. a link to the book on your website or Amazon, the PDF or a hard copy of the book, etc.) to get CEUs. PUBLISH AN ARTICLE If you write an article that is printed in a published magazine or academic journal, you may receive 2 CEUs for each article. You must fill out an NTA CEU Report, list at least 3 professional resources you consulted while researching, and show proof of the article (a scan of the article page(s) of the magazine, a link to the abstract online, etc.). Blog posts do not qualify for CEUs. Nutritional Therapy Association, Inc. 9
